Why are breadbowls so amazing?

Is it because they contain yummy soup?

Is it because you can eat them afterwards?

Or is it because it reminds of the scene from Willy Wonka when he drinks out of a daffodil cup then takes a bite?

SMTTT 11-22-2010 08:04 PM

How did you manage to make a Willy Wonka reference when I'm watching Willy Wonka?!

I love scraping the bread at the bottom after I've eaten my soup because it gets all mushy and yummy :)

Yay! It's my favorite movie, so I probably quote it more than I realize.

I kind of think today was the first time I've ever had a breadbowl. Is that possible?? It inspired me so much to create this thread, apparently!

=O The only places I know of that have them around here are like fancy restaurants an hour or so away so I don't have them that often either. I'm one of those people who, even though I'm full, likes to snack and snack after a meal. Bread bowls are perfect =)

WVU alpha phi 11-22-2010 10:33 PM

I prefer a breadbowl without the soup lol. I just picked up a sourdough breadbowl tonight from Harris Teeter, I probably get one every time I'm there.

Haha I think that's just bread. Well, I guess it's still in the shape of a bowl, but it isn't actually acting like one.

nittanygirl 11-23-2010 12:44 AM

As far as what I like in my bread bowl...
potato soup of course! load up on those starches

Jill1228 11-23-2010 01:36 AM

A bread bowl with chili or clam chowder=to die for!

I had mine with chili! I went to Erik's Deli with pea soup on the brain, but they didn't have it so I got chili instead.

tinydancer 11-23-2010 04:50 AM

I think it's just because bread is awesome. I like bread!

FHwku 11-23-2010 05:16 AM

spinach dip

KillarneyRose 11-23-2010 07:01 AM

Wow, it's been a loooooong time since I've been on GreekChat and I must say the topics are pretty interesting! lol

As for me? Panera bread bowl with French Onion soup WITH the baguette on the side smeared with butter. Carbs AND fat all in one delicious dish! Then you can even buy some yummy desert. I'm a big Panera fan.

sadly i used to be a manager there and the franchise owner i worked for is racist...
we weren't allowed to hire black people...

it was sad and i finally quit bc of that reason.

A franchise owner is not representative of the whole.

I love Panera's Broccoli Cheddar soup in a bread bowl, in a regular bowl, with a mouse, in a house.

nittanygirl 11-23-2010 12:57 PM

Mmmm I love broccoli cheddar from Panera too.
And their bagels
And their sandwiches
And their mac-n-cheese
And their lemonade
Panera is one of my top favorite chain restaurants.

carnation 11-23-2010 12:58 PM

Ditto on the broccoli cheddar without the mouse in the house.

Actually, there is a little white mouse running around this house and I fear that we'll never find him. :(

Same here! I also have a "surprise" on my card since it was my birthday recently.

I'm a big fan of Panera's tomato soup in the breadbowl. Croutons, tomato soup goodness and more bread. What's not to love?

KillarneyRose 11-23-2010 01:28 PM

So, the mac and cheese is good? I've been wanting to try it but I keep going back to either the French Onion soup or the Mediterranean Veggie sandwich.

Y'all are making me hungry and all I have here in my office is a can of Progresso Chicken Soup :(

Kappamd 11-23-2010 01:36 PM

The mac and cheese is EXCELLENT.

Well I'll be the odd one out...I've never heard of Panera. =( We don't have one in Mississippi

KSig RC 11-23-2010 03:33 PM

Potato soup is probably the easiest to screw up in the entire world ... Panera's is excellent though.

The number next to it isn't, but f- it, amirite?

Don't feel bad. I don't really care for Panera (except for the cinnamon crunch bagels and a few pastries), and I don't like bread bowls.

/running and ducking for cover.

LouisaMay 11-23-2010 03:38 PM

French toast bagels...yummy!

My hubby usually gets a bread bowl, and my son steals the soft cut out part to dip in his own soup.

Awwww, and here I was trying to get a rise out of you.

I feel bad now.

(Wait, that's what you were aiming for, huh? Heaping coals?)

Munchkin03 11-23-2010 03:47 PM

Panera. That's what I love about the suburbs. There's only one in NYC and it's not anywhere useful to me. Meanwhile, my hometown has about a zillion of them.

I love breadrolls. I've been putting my homemade shrimp bisque in breadrolls.

thetygerlily 11-23-2010 03:49 PM

Lucy you are making me hungry! Especially since we are snowed in today, a bread bowl sounds perfect. Too bad Panera isn't within walking distance. Or in my house.

And I agree- the white cheddar mac & cheese is tasty. I'm not a fan of orange cheeses but love white cheddar. Mmm...

I hope they don't. I may never want to eat there again. But in general, this IS going to happen at all major chains. It's a huge trend in the industry right now whether through force (laws) or conscious health decisions being made by major brands.

I LOVE FRENCH TOAST BAGELS to whoever said that with the Hazelnut cream cheese & a cup of coffee (though I'm not a fan of Panera coffee as much as DD)

Alumiyum 11-23-2010 03:55 PM

There is a Panera on the way to my parents' house, and another five minutes from it. Now I'm going to have to stop and buy food.

I meant the calories - having that info right up on the menu (all around here do) is absolutely brilliant.

There's a smattering in Chicago but only one in the loop that I know of. It used to be close to my work, but the we moved offices and it's a 15 minute walk away. I still do it from time to time, when I feel the hankering.

Drolefille 11-23-2010 04:29 PM

Why wouldn't you dip your delicious buffalo wings in the same ooze simple folks put on iceberg lettuce and children put on french fries? WHAT A TREAT!

Ranch is far superior. Studies have been done.
