100 Books

I stole this from Facebook. I'd love to see what GCers have read! I must admit - a large number of the books I have read were required reading. Had I not had such a literature-heavy background, my list wouldn't be nearly so bold. Have fun!

ETA: Thanks, MC, for providing us a clean list. If anyone wants to add an asterisk, I say go for it. :)

Have you read more than 6 of these books? The BBC believes most people will have read only 6 of the 100 books listed here. Instructions: Bold those books you've read in their entirety, italicize the ones you started but didn't finish or read an excerpt.

Summer reading project now to read the rest of them...

nittanygirl 11-22-2010 12:23 PM

ok... so ALL of you people need to read The Kite Runner
It is an awesome book. It's "sequel" (because I can't think of the right word) A Thousand Splendid Suns is even better.
Add it to your holiday lists!

IrishLake 11-22-2010 12:44 PM

There is a lot on the list I have on my "to read" list. There's also a lot that I want to own copies of.

nittanygirl 11-22-2010 12:46 PM

Ditto on that, IL.
I think some are publicly available online. I may need to look into that if I can handle reading off of a screen

Am I the only one who thinks this is a really strange assortment on this list? How did they pick these things, anyway?

Senusret I 11-22-2010 01:38 PM

Can I state for the record that there is no novel called The Chronicles of Narnia?

You're right - there's not a single novel with this title. However, there's not a single novel with the title Harry Potter series, either.

I assumed when I first read the list that Chronicles encompasses all the novels in the series. That's also why I figured The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe was listed separately, since that's probably the most common of the lot, and it's probably common for people to have read only that one.

And, DSTRen, I agree that this list is a strange assortment. I saw it on a friend's Facebook page and simply copied/pasted here.

I am comforted to see that no one has read The Confederacy of Dunces. It has received such acclaim that I thought I was crazy for not being able to bring myself to finish it (on two separate occasions, to boot). For those of you who are using this list as a guide, I'd suggest you avoid that one.

Neither is there a novel called The Lord of the Rings :) I really do question whoever compiled this list. It's bizarre.

Although at least for that one, Tolkien conceived of it as one book and wanted it to be published as one book, not three. It was his publisher that decided otherwise.

And I agree on the strangeness of the list.

Which is why I italicized The Chronicals, yet bolded TL,tW,atW. I bolded HP and LotR because I've read all of the books in those series.

HA! I used "bolded" in a sentance! Who is it that has "bolded is not a word" in their siggy? Whoops on my part!!! :D

The list is a little random. I'm also slightly appalled at how many books I've started, and not completed.

ETA: The more I think about it, the more I wonder if I've read all of the Sherlock Homes stories, but I'll leave it in italics just in case.

ColdInCanada11 11-22-2010 02:28 PM

I'm pretty sure that the BBC asked people to vote for their favourite novels/literary works, hence the oddities on the list. It's pretty much like SYTYCD, it's not necessarily finding the best but rather the favourite.

ETA: Here's the BBC link for it.

My thoughts is that this is considered a list of "Classics"
The more current ones being books that will at some point probably be considered classics. But at first I also thought it was a strange list, even with my reasoning not all of it makes sense.

LucyKKG 11-22-2010 02:33 PM

Ok, I know I've read at least 18 of them.

And ditto with the thing about series VS individual books. That's lame because I've read parts of Harry Potter, the Chronicles of Narnia, and works of Shakespeare. It bothers me when they list one title from the series as a separate entity of the whole series.

And seriously, who has read ALL of Shakespeare's works? Dang...

I know! I was thinking the same thing, assuming this includes all of his sonnets.

[QUOTE=IrishLake;2005774]Which is why I italicized The Chronicals, yet bolded TL,tW,atW. I bolded HP and LotR because I've read all of the books in those series.

That's what I was thinking too! haha. And I also love that The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe is listed separately...like it's not really part of the chronicles. haha

**It's in my stack to read next.

Obviously, I had more than one professor who was seriously into Russian literature, but I've always had this fascination with Russia in the first place.

I question whether or not this is a "new classics" list. Some of them haven't had the chance to stand the test of time yet, and some of them I seriously tried to read, but were just not anything I would read. On the other hand, I've read the Bible by the year at least three times, and many people wouldn't do that. It does show the variety of choices that people have to read in this part of the world - we are so fortunate!

PPS: The numbering is off. Sorry, folks, I'm too tired to fix it!

Hmm, interesting list.

Much of what I've read was required reading in high school (do NOT start me on Tess of the d'Urbervilles - my AP English teacher had a serious thing for Thomas Hardy - barf). I did get into Daphne du Maurier's works after reading Rebecca for school. Fortunately I managed to escape Jane Austen.

I've read a lot of Shakespeare, the Bible, and the adventures of Sherlock Holmes, but I doubt I've read every word of any of them.

I find it interesting that The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe is listed separately from The Chronicles of Narnia. Wasn't that, um... the first book in the series?
