Arkansas school board member wants "fags" to kill themselves
Utterly horrified, disgusted and dismayed. The message makes me want to vomit, but additionally, a school board member who uses the word "thereselves"? Article text is as follows, with a link at the bottom:
An Arkansas School Board member recently launched an inflammatory anti-gay tirade on Facebook that ran the gamut from basic bigoted slurs, to encouraging "fags" to commit suicide and announcing that he'd disown his own children if they were gay. In response to a a massively popular Facebook initiative to show support for gay youths in response to a recent wave of suicides, Clint McCance, a board member in the Midland school district in northern Arkansas, wrote this screed, provided to the Advocate: "Seriously they want me to wear purple because five queers killed themselves. The only way im wearin it for them is if they all commit suicide. I cant believe the people of this world have gotten this stupid. We are honoring the fact that they sinned and killed thereselves because of their sin. REALLY PEOPLE."The reaction to the post was both positive and negative, the Advocate reports. McCance responded to one detractor, saying: "No because being a fag doesn't give you the right to ruin the rest of our lives. If you get easily offended by being called a fag then dont tell anyone you are a fag. Keep that shit to yourself. I dont care how people decide to live their lives. They dont bother me if they keep it to thereselves. It pisses me off though that we make a special purple fag day for them. I like that fags cant procreate. I also enjoy the fact that they often give each other aids and die. If you arent against it, you might as well be for it."After one commenter invoked McCance's Christianity and his willingness to seemingly talk hatefully about the families of other people, McCance wrote back: "I would disown my kids they were gay. They will not be welcome at my home or in my vicinity. I will absolutely run them off. Of course my kids will know better. My kids will have solid christian beliefs. See it infects everyone."http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/1..._n_774656.html |

This is a school board member? Wow. There are no words, no words for this "man". |

I had to look up where it was...and it turns out it's in my current "metropolitan" area of Ft. Smith. And, I'm really good at Arkansas geography, especially due to high school football. When I first heard of this, I thought they were referring to Midland, Texas. I mean, it sucks and he should never have said that but the fact that he's a school board member is to be taken with a grain of salt. A dog could be a school board member there. They only have 250-odd people in the town. |

Paladino lives in New York and is anti-gay. I don't blame all of New York for 1 person. |

It was one Arkansan speaking to another, regarding someone else's prejudices. |

It's like how I hate when a movie is set in the South and someone walks into the sheriff's office. There's no airconditioning and one of those sorry old time fans that just goes back and forth. We have airconditioning. We don't say "Aw, shucks" (well, not a lot of us). And, we aren't all prejudiced white trash. |

It's his First Amendment right to subject himself to international ridicule. My guess is that in a 250-person burg in northwest Arkansas, this should be good enough to get him elected mayor. Maybe even to the state legislature.

This article caused something rare...I literally had nothing to say when I first read it I was so appalled. |
His little tirade has pretty much guaranteed one of his kids is Gay and will come out, move away, and be awesome. Or perhaps he is one of those people who spill hate to deflect and he's been creeping in bathroom stalls and on Craigslist having casual encounters.
I don't think any less of Arkansas for one moron, hi, I live in Idaho we have plenty of our own embarrassing characters. Luckily the worst of them packed up their white pride hate and moved away and Sarah Palin moved back to Alaska. We even got rid of the guy who believed breast cancer is caused by abortion and though his replacement doesn't believe in evolution he is an improvement. |

Arizona isn't exactly the poster child for normalcy either... check out the governors we've had *cough* and then there is the Legislature... At any rate, I do agree with you that the hate-filled man has something behind all that rage. What it is will be seen eventually; it always works its way to the surface. |
Thank GOD there are no crazies in Texas.

The first that comes to mind is "reprehensible." (...though part of me thinks that baboon wouldn't know what that word means.) The sad part is that he is a parent. I saw him briefly on Anderson Cooper (talk about irony), where he was trying to explain away his statements. Anderson was being surprisingly objective with the guy. I also feel bad for the residents of Arkansas to have such a posterchild for ignorance and hate come from their state. It would be so easy to say, "I hope his kids are gay," but I would never, ever want to subject a child to living with a parent like that. Given the focus of this website, I certainly hope some of GLO leaders look at this as a wake up call to the ignorance and hate that is still out there and promote more tolerance of diversity. By the way, does anyone know who this guy works for? |

I don't think there is any possible comparison to what Paladino said (or what Ken Buck in Colorado said) and what was said by the (now former) school board member in Arkansas. I am certainly not defending Buck or Paladino, but at least they didn't bring God into it or indicate that the suicides were not a loss to society. It is too bad our former school board member could not be forced to attend that funeral (though I am sure most folks there would want to tear him limb from limb). |
Arkansas school board member to resign over anti-gay post
(CNN) -- A school board district member in Arkansas who came under fire for an anti-gay post on a social networking site regrets the comments and will resign his seat, he told CNN's Anderson Cooper on Thursday. link |

I watched him on Anderson Cooper last night.
He is so full of shit. While people say ignorant things and learn from their mistakes, paticularly when getting out of their boxes and educating themselves on issues, I think he's full of shit. I don't believe anything that he said last night. Not a thing. I love the couple whose son committed suicide. They came on after that other guy and the father said he was going to pray for dude because it's the Christian thing to do. Then he basically said it's taking everything in him not to say what he really wants to say. That made me smile that he was honest about wanting to cuss dude out (or perhaps beat his ass). :D |
