Worst Case of Claustrophobia Coming to an End

I searched and didn't see a thread about the miners in Chile. While initial reports were predicting a rescue that could last until Christmas, it appears that their days of claustrophobia are coming to and end.

Quote:

Chile's mining minister said Saturday night that the 33 miners trapped for more than two months will probably be pulled out starting Wednesday. That's because the rescue team has decided to reinforce less than 315 feet (96 meters) of the rescue shaft in steel pipe.

The rest of the escape shaft is exposed rock, and the rescue team has decided it's strong enough to provide for a smooth ride for the miners' escape capsule.

Mining Minister Laurence Golborne set the date after the shaft was inspected with a video camera Saturday following the completion of the hole earlier in the day - a success that set off celebrations by the miners underground and by their families and rescue workers on the surface.
Praying that their rescue over the next few days goes smoothly and they are returned to full health soon.

I also hope that these men are well compenstated from the crappy mine company (numerous citations for saftey issues) as well as benefit handsomely from book/movie deals. May they never have to work again.

Full story.

Amen! I certainly hope that works out in their favor! In addition, I cant imagine how hard it has been on their families as well.

Right now, live on TV! So happy for these miners!

I'm watching!

Wow. Thank God the hospitals are waiting for them. I hope they also have counseling options.

First miner arrives!!!! :D Got me all teary eyed and stuff.

Did I hear correctly that this is the first time in history that people have been trapped in a mine for so long and gotten out alive? Praise God.

15 minutes per miner and 32 miners left. I don't know if I can stay awake for all of them.

AGDee 10-12-2010 11:18 PM

Got me teary too. I was thinking about when my brother had his tonsils out and I had to stay at my aunt's house. I was 4. I was at my aunt's house for weeks and when my parents picked me up I was laughing and crying at the same time. As an adult, I asked my mom why I was at my aunt's house for so long for my brother's tonsillectomy. She informed me it was a total of 3 nights. When I was 4, I swore it was a lot longer than that.

I wish I could stay up to watch more, but I need to sleep...

Just got teary watching my Texas Rangers *finally* win a playoff series, and switched over to see the first miner out. Waterworks at my house right now.

They have 8 of the miners out now!!
Someone on UK tv this morning mentioned "I wonder if all the miners wives will be giving birth nine months from now".

agzg 10-13-2010 08:57 AM

I'm really impressed with how seemingly healthy and energetic many of them are to this point. And how in the hell did they shave?

carnation 10-13-2010 09:12 AM

They sent razors to them and they already had lights.

Eleven up now! Did anyone else get a claustrophobic feeling when thinking about this--like you were under there too?

Our Chilean friends are rejoicing on Facebook! Chi! Chi! Chi! Le! Le! Le!

Tulip86 10-13-2010 09:24 AM

It seems the Chilean goverment has thought this out very well.
The miners get physical checks right away and then have to go to a hospital for physical and psychological observation for 2 days. And they have psychologists on standby for the next months.. Never have people been underground this long and came out alive, that had to have such an impact on them.

I stayed up last night to watch the first one come out, and they're up to 12 now!

NinjaPoodle 10-13-2010 10:01 AM

13 out, 20 to go

Yes and they have spent millions of dollars since August(?) preparing the hospitals and the rescue attempt itself.

This is awesomeness. I cried the most when the miner was rescued and the FIRST thing he did was get on his knees and prayed. It makes me teary eyed just typing about it. He was also the prayer leader. CNN was talking about the role of faith in health, etc. Amen to that.

honeychile 10-13-2010 12:07 PM

Amazing! What is the chant that they're all doing as they come up?

DaemonSeid 10-13-2010 12:57 PM

and then there is the mistress of miner #21

This is what they are hearing on the way up

ree-Xi 10-13-2010 01:20 PM

#18 is next. I can't imagine what the miners are feeling during their final fifteen minute rides in that 22-inch wide capsule.

DrPhil 10-13-2010 08:29 PM

32ND MINER IS OUT!!!!!

1 MINER LEFT!!!!

DrPhil 10-13-2010 08:30 PM

The last miner volunteered to be last. He is the shift foreman. Brave souls.

ETA: 33RD MINER COMING UP SHAFT!!

After that we're waiting for the rescuers to come up the shaft. Can't forget about them.

Drolefille 10-13-2010 09:01 PM

How many rescuers are down there now, at least four or five?

It would suck to be the last guy. That hour will last forever.

AZ-AlphaXi 10-13-2010 09:06 PM

News report said that there were 5 or 6 EMTs and/or rescure workers who went down.

DrPhil 10-13-2010 09:06 PM

I think they said 5 rescuers.

I assume they are coming up the shaft now while CNN is showing the rescued miners talking to the president. I guess viewers don't want to see the rescuers come up the shaft.

DaemonSeid 10-13-2010 09:10 PM

so who stayed to greet the last miner...wifey or mistress?

AZ-AlphaXi 10-13-2010 09:17 PM

I just saw 6 rescue workers in the picture of them getting ready to start up.

Now that these miners are safe and sound, I can say that both miner 21 and his mistress are selfish assholes. I hope his wife is working toward telling him to fuck off.

DaemonSeid 10-13-2010 10:16 PM

i guess you can say he dug a hole for himself?

DrPhil 10-13-2010 10:16 PM

DaemonSeid, everyone! He'll be here all week. Unfortunately. :D

The statement that the wife gave as to why she didn't go to the site today was really classy. I wish I had that kind of poise - although she did have almost two months to prepare for it.

Second-to-last rescuer is going up in the capsule now.

christiangirl 10-13-2010 11:01 PM

I've been glued to this. Praise God, I'm so happy for these miners, considering it was projected they might be there till Christmas. I can't believe they're all safe and it looks like the one miner's pneumonia was the worst of it. I am so grateful, I hope they all recover from the long-term effects of this. All of them (AND their families) need counseling once they are medically stable.

agzg 10-13-2010 11:37 PM

The last rescuer is up, and the capsule is coming out. What a sight.

DrPhil 10-14-2010 12:19 AM

Wow.

cali_gossip 10-14-2010 02:49 AM

I got really teary eyed when they got the first miner out. I'm so sad I was at work and missed seeing the last miner get pulled out! Thank goodness everyone got out safely. Hopefully the miners will be in good health upon evaluation at the hospital.
