Death of DG member at University of Washington

It is a sad day for Panhellenic in Seattle. A body of a 20 year old girl was found in the stairwell of a fraternity. She was a member of Delta Gamma. At this time they believe it was a suicide. So very sad for her family, her sisters and all the sororities at UW. My daughter said it is very somber up there right now. Send prayers...

I just realized I posted this in the recruitment thread... Sorry, if anyone knows how to move it to the general thread, that would be great.

Her brother is also an active Brother of UW's chapter of Chi Psi. Prayers go out to the entire UW Greek community.

Right now there is very limited information available to the public.

She seemed to have a bright spirit and love for life. Here is a clip of her singing

How very very tragic. My heart goes out to her family, sisters and friends. :(

How terribly sad and tragic.

I don't want to cause a tangent, but when I say that nobody knows how another person is truly feeling, this is what I mean. Heaven knows what made this beautiful young woman think that suicide was the only answer.

My heart and thoughts goes out to her chapter :(

Wow so sad. What a beautiful and talented young lady. Prayers for the DGs and all of her friends and family.

The UW community is indeed very saddened by the loss of this young woman's life.

It doesn't add a whole lot more information, but here is a link to an article in The Daily, the student newspaper:

It is truly tragic indeed! I wonder why she chose the fraternity house to take her own life in :(.

Found in the stairwell of a fraternity? I don't know about ya'll, but that raises a lot of questions in my mind. My prayers go out for the family, and sorority of this girl.

dawgmom 10-07-2010 07:12 PM

no frat involvement

The girl's body was found OUTSIDE the fraternity, and the stairwell was just 3 steps going down to an unused door at the edge of their parking lot. The medical examiner has ruled it a suicide, and the cause of death as "asphyxiation due to hanging". There was a part of a rope observed hanging off the fire escape. The is very tragic for the fraternity and the entire greek community at UW.

I'm not doubting the theory that she possibly committed suicide and am happy to give the fraternity the benefit of the doubt that none of their members were involved.

My question is why the fraternity house? I would think if one wanted to kill themself (and I'm not making light of suicide at all) there are many other places on or off a college campus that could be chosen. I am wondering if she was perhaps in a relationship with someone in Phi Delt, got her heart broken, and thought this was a way to make someone feel bad. I dont know if that is the case, I'm just wondering.

I know you all have a right to discuss this but I'd like to respectfully request that you refrain from speculation while we deal with this sad event and help our Beta Chapter cope with the tragic loss of a sister.

Well said, honeychile. Unfortunately, some of those who commit suicide feel that it would be "better that way" for everyone-it is usually the opposite. The grief and guilt of the loved ones left behind can be nigh onto unbearable. How my heart goes out to those who love her.

PeppyGPhiB 10-07-2010 10:10 PM

I am friends with her cousin, and my intern at work is a member of the chapter. This is a complete shock to everyone that knew Carly, who by all accounts was an incredibly positive person with a lot of passion for music and life in general. I'm thinking of and praying for her friends and family who will surely try to make sense of this, but probably never will.

nittanygirl 10-07-2010 10:24 PM

Very sad.

myopicsunflower 10-08-2010 01:03 AM

Oh God...this is just terrible and sad. My prayers to Carly's family, sisters, and friends... :(

DEVODUDE 10-08-2010 09:27 AM

This is very sad to hear this happen to a lovely young woman. My prayers are with her family and the sisters of Delta Gamma.

Of the thousands of words in my vocabulary, there are none that truly fit at this time. I can only express my deepest sorrow for this loss to this young woman's family, friends, sisters, and to extend compassion to all who are suffering. Deep peace...

You are correct and I apologize. I overstepped my boundaries at an inappropriate time. I am truly very sorry for your loss. :(

erica812 10-08-2010 01:28 PM

I can't even express...wow.
My heart breaks for this young woman's family, friends, and sorority sisters. I pray that they help each other to heal and eventually celebrate a beautiful life.
