Duke coed's sexual history "senior thesis" goes viral

Tulip86's request for thesis help reminded me of something I saw on the evening news tonight.

http://blogs.forbes.com/kashmirhill/...senior-thesis/

Quote:

Karen Owen, a 2010 graduate, kept detailed notes on her sexual adventures with 13 members of Duke’s lacrosse, baseball and tennis teams over the last four years. She then put those notes, along with the athletes’ names and photos into a PowerPoint presentation, that concludes with a ranking of the 13 on what she calls her “F*** list.” (Congratulations, I suppose, to this guy for topping the list.)

According to Jezebel, Owen sent the “unofficial senior thesis” titled “An education beyond the classroom: excelling in the realm of horizontal academics” to three friends and did not intend for it to go further than that. But one of those friends forwarded it on and it went viral, going out on listservs and eventually winding up on Gawker sites, Jezebel (for women) and Deadspin (for sports addicts).
I don't know what to say about this. My senior thesis (eons ago) was nowhere this interesting!

Oh my

Her parents must be so proud.

DrPhil 10-05-2010 09:04 AM

She's an idiot.

There would be a different twist if this was a man with a list of sexcapades with women.

What? Or are you making a comment on the fact that men are usually that stupid.

Tulip86 10-05-2010 09:06 AM

It just surfaced in Dutch media as well, feeling very bad for those guys!
Especially the one she rated 1/10 :S

Why would that matter?

One of the articles (perhaps jokingly seriously) referred to her as a hot sorority girl. I wouldn't doubt that she's in a sorority.

BluPhire 10-05-2010 11:45 AM

Actually reading the list....NOOOOO!!!!

LOL

Deadspin finally redacted the names, but the faces still exist.

BluPhire 10-05-2010 11:54 AM

NOOOO!!!! Reading about subject number six.

Most memorable moment. Just read the quote for the most memorable moment.

NOOOO!!!!

It really would be interesting - especially considering that discussion of this type is generally considered more "masculine" (even though in my experience and my limited understanding of the research, women discuss [truthful] sexual escapades much more often and in far greater detail). Particularly with her extended discussion of donger size and the male's aggressiveness, I almost feel like a male 'equivalent' discussion would be derided as the "usual chauvinist piggery" or whatever by some, and straight-up applauded by others.

The comparisons some sites have made between her and Tucker Max are particularly telling, since the two have almost nothing in common in terms of writing style or goal.

Ultimately, it's awkward and kind of funny, and likely terrible for her because everything lives on the internet forever. The job offers etc. will be fleeting - grandkids stumbling upon it is slightly more permanent. That might be the lesson, even though the feminist-supporting-man-dude inside of me would like there to be a larger one. HA LARGER ONE - TAKE THAT, RED SOX PROSPECT EXCORIATED IN PRINT!

AZTheta 10-05-2010 01:17 PM

Is it possible that this is all made up, or am I just that naive? Surely no one is as stupid or dumb or careless or egocentric or cruel or idiotic (or whatever) as this young woman appears.

*shakes head in disbelief*

ColdInCanada11 10-05-2010 02:01 PM

Am I the only person who wondered how, in her senior year, she actually had time to make this??

FHwku 10-05-2010 02:01 PM

it's going to be an awkward Thanksgiving dinner.

I agree with all of this. LOL.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe this "study" took 4 years to complete.

I think I read somewhere in one of the blog comments that she was not a member of a Duke sorority, but she did belong to Maxwell House -- one of the selected living groups on campus. http://www.duke.edu/web/maxwell/rush.htm While not Greek, they are coed and have "rush" events.

But they do have Duke (and He's Not Here in Chapel Hill) in common.

*This girl is a moron.
*It sounds like most of this sex was unprotected.
*I can't believe she had the nerve to call one of the guys a whore.
*I bet when she goes to apply for those post grad jobs, lots and lots of employers remember her name from Yahoo! News.

Lol, I just meant the time she took to actually make a powerpoint presentation for it. I feel like there isn't anything SO important in my personal life that I would feel compelled to put the time and effort into a powerpoint pres. for it. Especially for a joke.

Kevin 10-05-2010 03:07 PM

I don't know what to think of her. This is just another life lesson about how you need to control what is published on the internet under your name.

insinuating another woman is a whore (unless she got paid to have sex) is never o.k. in my opinion...

this.

she shouldn't have sent it to others, making something like that is one thing, showing it to others is not nice. Expecting noting would come of it after showing others if very naive

Is 'slut' more acceptable, since there was no exchange of funds (just fluids)?

pshsx1 10-05-2010 03:46 PM

This is awesome.

LOL a bit more acceptable yes

and to each their own opinion, I just don't appreciate people calling women whores when they have quite some bedpartners, while men can get away with the same behavior being called a hero.

Men can be (and often are *cough*pshsx1*cough) whores, too.

ETA: That should read "can be called whores" as well.

PiKA2001 10-05-2010 04:04 PM

I bet there are some pretty busy lawyers in Durham right now...

Tulip86 10-05-2010 04:08 PM

haha, some examples do come to mind...

An neither is calling someone out when you are partaking in questionable behavior yourself.

Slut shaming is not appropriate. She's just an idiot. Shame the idiot, not the slut.

Even if the slut calls someone else a slut?

I'd think that would warrant a "what's good for the goose..." type of response.

Well, takes one to know one and homegirl is meeting all of the requirements. :)

knight_shadow 10-05-2010 04:26 PM

 She has more than just 'whore tendencies'?

That's what she gets for buying those clear heels :(

If we're trading aphorisms, two wrongs don't make a right.

I think she focused on a specific time frame--she refers to guys she hooked up to prior to the beginning of "her studies."

Sucks to be her. I mean, really...she's at the beginning of her career and her adult life, and the first thing that people will Google about her is this. It'll continue for a while, and could impact other people in her life--both now and in her future.

Kevin 10-05-2010 05:17 PM

If I were her, I'd strongly consider having my name legally changed.
