My Friendtastic Recruitment

Hi everyone,

As you can tell by my name and my previous posts I currently attend the University of Nevada Las Vegas. Recruitment starts at the end of the week and I am super excited! The anticipation for the past month has been crazy. For those of you who don't know, UNLV is known for being a commuter college with, from what I've heard, a fairly non-competitive recruitment process. Recruitment is slightly deferred as we started class at the end of August. There are six Panhellenic Council sororities on campus. Since anyone can just go look up which ones are on campus I'll just list them:

Alpha Delta Pi
Alpha Gamma Delta
Alpha Xi Delta
Delta Zeta
Sigma Kappa
Zeta Tau Alpha

I have decided to go with a Friends theme, which is one of my favorite t.v shows AND has six main characters which works out perfectly! :D

Code Names (in no particular order or color):
Rachel
Phoebe
Monica
Ross
Joey
Chandler

----------------------------------------------------------------------

The schedule for recruitment is as follows:

Wednesday or Thursday- Orientation Session
Friday- "Go Greek" Day One
Saturday- "Philanthropy Day"
Sunday- "Preference Day"
Monday- "Bid Day"

I have to double check but I am pretty sure it goes 6-4-2. I will most likely post each day the day or two after it actually happens since I have let everyone know my school. I would have made this thread later in the week but I needed a place to focus some of my excitement.

So far there have been little events before recruitment in order to get us more acquainted with the sororities. I have been putting quite a bit of effort into avoiding any sort of tent talk as I really want to go into this with as little bias as possible because in all honesty everyone I have met so far has been very friendly. Overall, I am excited to see how this turns out.

groovypq 09-20-2010 04:26 PM

I love Friends! Still miss that show! Good luck!

AGDee 09-20-2010 06:06 PM

Good luck!

FSUZeta 09-20-2010 06:53 PM

good luck bunny!

33girl 09-20-2010 06:56 PM

I think this is what's technically called a "delayed recruitment" since first semester freshmen can participate. Good luck!

IrishLake 09-20-2010 08:08 PM

I've never heard it called delayed, this is how it is at a lot of schools around here. Best of luck, OP!

DubaiSis 09-21-2010 02:15 AM

I'm rooting for a Chandler AND an Alpha Xi Delta ending. Could I be so lucky as to have guessed right?

Good luck!

twinkle555 09-21-2010 09:21 AM

Phoebe!!

Jill1228 09-21-2010 10:32 PM

Good luck. I love y'all campus and Las Vegas is my favorite city :D

So Wednesday and Thursday were orientation days for the recruitment process. Each girl only had to attend one of the days. It was basically an information session about how each day was going to go, what to wear, what not to wear, etc. It was also when we met our Rho Gammas and our recruitment groups. Overall it was pretty exciting just to know that recruitment is finally here.

Today was day one of recruitment. I am tired. I don't know how you girls do it, especially at bigger schools where there are so many more sororities. By the end they all start to blend together. I don't know how the sororities do it either. Meeting nearly 400 girls in one night and then trying to narrow them down. That really must be exhausting.

I also quickly realized it is nearly impossible to avoid tent talk. I was surprised about how vocal people were about what sorority they wanted and even more so about which ones they did not. Several girls are dead set on one sorority and have already said they will drop if they don't get them. It's kind of crazy actually, but either way I am trying my very hardest not to be influenced by other people's opinions.

Time to get some rest but I will update tomorrow or Sunday with an actual account of the day. :D

Yes, UNLVbunny, it is. It's exhausting in more ways than you can imagine. There is extensive preparation that goes into recruitment, starting in the spring and carrying through the summer; the actual days of recruitment are very long and emotionally intense for the actives. But - it's worth it. Or else we wouldn't do it.

And please, please, please - let the tent talk go. Be your own person, keep an open mind, and you will find your home. You have excellent chapters at UNLV. The experience lasts a lifetime, not just the (relatively) short time you're actually in college as an "active". And if you're lucky, you'll have friends in every GLO, not just your own. *banging the panhellenic drum again*

Hope you got some rest, sending you lots of luck and positive energy.

DubaiSis 09-25-2010 01:46 PM

It's great that you've seen the error in these girls' thinking. Some of these girls will miraculously change their story, and others will stupidly drop out as soon as they experience the taste of rejection, maybe for the first time in their lives.

Get lots of rest, try to keep the emotions in check, and stay positive! I wish you the very best of luck.

cali_gossip 09-29-2010 04:06 AM

Ooh I'm rooting for Joey!

DubaiSis 09-29-2010 09:33 AM

OK, so UNLV recruitment is done. I want to know how it turned out!

honeychile 09-29-2010 01:50 PM

I'd like to know, too. I know the ADPi results, but I'd like to hear the stories behind it.

UNLVBunny 09-30-2010 02:57 AM

I'm back! This week has been super crazy but oh so fun.

So here is a recap of my recruitment experience:

Day One:
Like I said before day one was so hectic. I never realized so many girls were going to go through recruitment but I was shocked how smoothly everything ran. They really had everything down time wise. Anyway on with my day. We went to each room for about 25 minutes. Each room had a cheer to welcome us in.

Chandler-
This was my first room of the day. I was nervous but very excited to get started. I knew everyone said it was going to be loud but wow. Loud didn't even begin to explain it. I loved the way the room was decorated. I ended up talking to about five or six girls in this room. I don't actually remember how many, it all flew by so fast. Everyone seemed really nice but the conversations really didn't get past hey what's your major and hometown. When I left I wasn't sure how I felt just because I didn't really get to know anyone.

Joey-
Here I ended up talking to I think three or four people. I met two girls who had the same major as me and we ended up talking more about just general life and interests which was really great. Over all I felt very comfortable talking to everyone here.

Rachel-
It's odd but I don't remember a ton about this room. From what I wrote down, I know that I talked to maybe three people who seemed friendly. I also remember that a girl who I had met at one of the informational booths came up and said hi, which I thought was nice.

We had a long break after this which involved dinner. Up to this point, although I had met a lot of people and I did really like Joey I was actually a little underwhelmed. I didn't feel like I had really clicked with the other two sororities where as other people in my group were gushing over certain ones.

Ross-
This room was really cute and the girls in it were adorable. I only talked to one girl in this room. After being in rooms where I talked to several people through the course of the 25 minutes it felt a little odd just to talk to one. We looked at the pictures that they had around the room and talked about their social events. Oh I also remember that the girl talking so close to my face it felt very weird. I kept wanting to back up a little but felt that would be rude.

Phoebe-
This was another room where I only talked to maybe two people. The first girl I was picked up by was nice. However, she kept asking me if I had a boyfriend, which was a little off putting for me, not that I don't like boys. :p Anyway, she was the girl I talked to for most of the party.

Monica-
Going into recruitment I wasn't sure if I was going to click with this group just based on going to their booths because at times they seemed more stand offish, but once I got there I really liked them. I talked to two girls. Both were super nice and we talked about some of the different sorority events as well as what they loved about their sorority. I remember leaving this room feeling good about it.

At the end of the day we had to list our top four and rank our bottom two. In all honesty I wasn't sure how I felt. There were two groups I knew I liked but other than that I didn't not (yes a double negative) like the other groups but I didn't feel strongly towards them either.

I ended up putting downwith the top four in no order-
1. Rachel
1. Joey
1. Ross
1. Monica
2. Chandler
3. Phoebe

Our Rho Gamma told us she'd call us and let us know if we hadn't been asked back to any chapters the next day. All the Rho Gammas kept saying that there was only one girl who was released after the first day last year to try and make us all feel better. Personally, I think that would make me feel worse if I was released on the first day, but that's probably just me. Anyway on to day 2! :D

UNLVBunny 09-30-2010 03:25 AM

Day 2 Philanthropy Day:

When day two arrives I am super excited to get to school to see who invited me back for the day. When I get to my group it is pretty obvious that we are missing quite a few people. Apparently our Rho Gamma called people who did not have parties until later in the day so they didn't have to sit around forever. I guess about eight or nine people had been released already, which seemed like a large jump if last year they only had one. Anyway everyone picked up their schedule from our Rho Gamma. When I opened mine up I saw that I had been invited back to Monica and Joey. At first I felt a little hurt that I was only invited back to two of the four max groups. Of course I sat there for a minute over analyzing things in my head, obviously having that quick "why didn't anyone else like me" moment. But I quickly pulled myself out of that to realize I was invited back to the groups I actually felt something towards the day before, which made perfect sense. There were not too many girls with full schedules in my group most had been invited back to three.

My first group of today was Joey. Their room was so beautiful. I was picked up by a girl I had talked to yesterday. We talked a little about how things went yesterday and we watched a video about their philanthropy. She told me about some of the events they have coming up. Out of all of the wonderful philanthropies that the sororities have one campus this is one of my favorite ones. I actually didn't realize how many people I had met the day before because I think I ended up talking to them all again today. I loved this group and was happy that I had been invited back.

Monica was next. I was picked up by a girl I hadn't met the day before. She was very nice. She talked a bit about what the craft was for their philanthropy and then she walked me over to meet some of her sisters. She introduced me to two of her sisters just as we started talking the girl who I had talked to the previous day came over to say hi. We watched the video about their philanthropy. When it was over, I was talking to three girls at once which was a little overwhelming but soon it was just me and the girl I had talked to the day before. We talked a bit about events that they had planned and about life in general. It was really great. She also showed me a chart with their dues and what not. I left the room with a hug and just happy feelings.

We had to rank our top two for today. Obviously since I only had two I chose Joey and Monica. I really couldn't decide between the two. I felt so comfortable with both of them. (looking back now I think I felt the most comfortable at Monica) I ranked my two with my Rho Gamma and left for the day. In my mind, I was super nervous. I loved both of these groups but I didn't think odds were in my favor since other girls had four groups that they could have possibly been invited back to where as I only had two. Either way I wouldn't know until the next day. They said they would start calling around eight to let people know if they had been released.

Day Three Preference Day:

I didn't sleep well this night. I was so nervous. I ended up getting up pretty early and catching up on some t.v shows that people had always said were good. I kept my phone with me all morning even when I go to take a shower. By ten o'clock, my nerves were settling down but I still was a bit on edge. I was starting to think about drying my hair to get ready and then it happens. My phone starts to ring and I see that it is from my Rho Gamma. I answer already knowing what she is going to say. Her words are just confirmation. "I am sorry but unfortunately you weren't asked back to either of the sororities. Do you have any questions? Try and get involved in other things around campus." The end. I think my heart broke a little. This was something that I had been looking forward to for a while and I could picture myself at home with these girls. I couldn't think about it. I called a friend and talked to them about it a little and then I threw myself into other things to keep myself busy. I remember wishing that I had work that day so I could go do something to take my mind off of it. It's been a couple days now and I am feeling better for the most part, just disappointed. I know that most, if not all, of the sororities made quota which is awesome for the campus Greek life but I am still hoping that one of my favorite chapters does informal recruitment in spring. Until then, I actually do have a couple clubs that I want to join that are based around my major.

Overall though, I did have a good time during recruitment and hope that there is another chance for me to become a part the Greek community on campus. :D

Thanks for sharing your story with us! I'm so glad you're feeling positive about this and will be getting involved on campus. I, too, hope that you'll have a chance to go Greek someday. Best of luck to you!

i am sorry that things didn't work out for you.

groovypq 09-30-2010 09:53 AM

:-(

I'm sorry things didn't work out. But you have a great, positive attitude! Good luck with everything you do from here on out - and I hope you do have another chance with the Greek community!

UNLVBunny 09-30-2010 12:22 PM

I contacted my Greek Life office today actually and they did say that one sorority will be doing COBing shortly. They took my name and put it on their list so hopefully something good comes from that. :D

I've read a bit about COBing here, and it all seems a little confusing. One thread recommended e-mailing the sorority that is participating in COB directly to let them know that I was still interested and then others just recommended getting your name on the list and going from there. Opinions?

Do you know which sorority? Do you know any women in that sorority?

I don't know your campus, but I think it is generally okay to send a short e-mail, ONCE, to express your interest. If you don't hear anything, they're just not that into you.

DubaiSis 09-30-2010 01:05 PM

I wish you the very best of luck with COB.

Try not to take this too personally. It's your life, but it's also just a numbers game. Try to stay positive and be open to the possibilities!
