A Sporty Transfer Recruitment
So as you can tell by my username, I am a California junior transfer student. I’m the first person in my entire extended family to even consider going Greek.
I’m enjoy watching sports so I have decided to code name based on California athletic teams. LA Dodgers Oakland Athletics SD Padres SF Giants Anaheim Angels Oakland Raiders SF 49ers Golden State Warriors LA Lakers Anaheim Ducks USC Trojans UCLA Bruins There are no connections between the code names and the sororities themselves. I used a random number generator to pair them up ;) For those wondering, the parties are split up as follows: Day 0 - Orientation Day 1 - Open House Day 2 - Open House Day 3 - House Tours/Philanthropy (up to 8) Day 4 - Skit (up to 5) Day 5 - Preference (up to 2) |
i'm so excited to read your story!! good luck :]
|
Thanks! I'm following yours as well.
Nice to see another upperclassman going through recruitment :) |
Yay CA!
|
Ooh...you have several favorite teams as your houses, so I'll maximize my options and say GO LAKERS, DUCKS, AND TROJANS! ;)
|
Oh, and go 49ers and Giants!
|
Fight on Trojans!!
|
I LOVE YOUR THEME.
Unfortunately you picked terrible teams ;) ... jk! My current roommate went to UCLA for undergrad, so I'll honorarily root for them. Best of luck! |
Anaheim Angels, because I used to live close to the stadium! Best of luck to you :)

Orientation was today. There were probably 700+ people there.
My Rho Gamma is a total sweetheart and my entire rush group is made up of transfers/3rd years which is awesome. They had Rho Gammas model outfits for each day. For open house the girls were wearing short denim shorts and tank tops (think day at Venice Beach). I had planned to wear two dresses for these days (think lunch date with friends) but now I'm not so sure I want to wear them if I'm going to stick out like a sore thumb. |

The idea of an All-Jr/Transfer Rho Gam group doesn't give me warm fuzzies. I don't know if Jrs at your school routinely get bids and/or have a separate quota, but it almost sounds like the group that you would send to see the Koi Pond (Sidney White reference, for those who missed a cheesy Greek movie). I'm not trying to be a Debbie Downer, but I can almost see a chapter thinking that they have a slack-off opportunity during your parties because the whole group is an easy cut.
ETA: I can see the benefit of them being a support group for eachother and having an easier bonding opportunity, but in this case, I don't think the benefits outweigh the risks. YMMV. |

I think, as an active, we did know when junior group was coming, but it wasn't an excuse to slack off. More likely, it meant that we'd move our older girls to the front of the rushing line, so that the juniors were being rushed by other juniors and even seniors, rather than the sophomores who did most of the rushing the rest of the time. It also mean that we weren't going to ask ridiculous shit like, "oh, which dorm are you living in?" or "why did you choose U of I?" |

First of all: FIGHT ON!
....sorry, had to say that.... But yes, due to the set up for the UC and Cal State systems there are a lot of juniors who come in from ccs. At least at UCLA juniors are routinely placed. Good luck! |
First Round was today. We visited 7 houses. Recruitment is exhausting but it's been so fun meeting girls in my rush group and in the houses. I tried to make conversation different than the usual major/hometown spiel and had some really fun convos on guilty pleasure TV shows, theme parks, and weird quirks we shared.
My posts will be delayed but I can say I really, really love one house and have another favorite not too far behind. Tomorrow we visit 5 more then rank our favorites. Oh and for those wondering about the clothing...about 85% of PNMs wore shorts or jeans. |
Sorry for the lack of updates. It's been near impossible for me to remember what happened at each house without my booklet.
Today is skit day. I got full parties (8) yesterday which surprised me given my status. Also I just found out if we go to pref we're guaranteed a bid! I'm so relieved. |
Today I again had another full set of parties (5)! I know some freshmen that didn't have full party schedules so I felt very lucky. However, I was dropped by two of my favorite houses from before -- Golden State Warriors and SF Giants. I really, really loved SF Giants and was so sad to not see them on my schedule today.
I'm really glad I'm in my transfer rush group because NO ONE has asked me about specific parties or sororities or my favorites. We just ask how each other's day has been going or if we're excited for bid day etc. I think it's because we're old enough to know not to ask and possibly hurt one another's feelings. I starting chatting with a freshman I had met at orientation today and she immediately asked me how many parties I had today and who my two favorites for tomorrow were! The five I visited today were: LA Dodgers - This was a house I didn't really feel fully comfortable with at open house because they didn't seem very laid back or chill. I ended up ranking them low after the first party but I'm very glad they invited me back twice because my perception has changed since then. Philanthropy round they showed their fun side and I really liked their themed shirts. I also liked what their philanthropy stood for. During entertainment round, they really showed their singing skills and made me laugh with their skit. Their slideshow seemed to focus a lot on socials but I know I'll meet studious girls in the house as well. I really hit it off with both girls I spoke to today so I'm hoping I get invited back to pref tomorrow. Anaheim Ducks - During open house I got along with all four girls I had met that day. One of them ended up giving me a house tour the next day and it was nice spending the entire party with her. Their physical house is gorgeous. But today I had pretty basic conversations with all three of the girls I spoke to about where I transferred from, my major etcetc. They weren't really the type of conversations I had expected for the 3rd day of recruitment. I was sad to not see a skit at this house but they did have one of the best slideshows of the ones I had seen all day. LA Lakers - During house tours here one of the girls yawned twice while giving me the house tour! I'm not sure how I felt about that. Their skit was really funny although not very elaborate. They managed to poke fun at fruity recruitment water and everything we were going through this week. One of the girl's acting was amazing. They also had a very nice slideshow. This house gave me a vibe very similar to Anaheim Ducks. Oakland Raiders - The first round at this house I was paired with another PNM. It was pretty awkward trying to speak without interrupting or cutting someone off. I came back for house tours and only had one girl which was really nice after the setup before. Today however I was paired up again with another PNM and found myself having more in common with the other PNM. Their slideshow was very cute and I loved the theme but it wasn't very prevalent at all throughout the party. Anaheim Angels - I didn't expect myself to have much in common with this house before starting recruitment. During Open House I found out of the girls I had met was in the same class as me that very morning. During Philanthropy Round I learned about their philanthropy which was something I had no idea existed. I really like the philanthropy event they put on at my school each year. Today's entertainment round probably took the cake. Their skit was very elaborate and hilarious. Their slideshow really focused on sisterhood and I could tell it was strong in the room. I ended up ranking... 1. Anaheim Angels 1. LA Dodgers 2. Anaheim Ducks 3. LA Lakers 4. Oakland Raiders I'm so very glad it's all over tomorrow. It's been 95 degrees lately and we're all exhausted! |
Please don't be put off by yawning!! Note that the actives may have been up very late preparing for today, voting, and practicing. And yes, sometimes people yawn when they are tense. I know the Reluctant One was up until four in the morning (with her sisters) working every night. Then came class and the parties. The Reluctant One slept fourteen hours straight after recruitment.

Remember, PNM's get ready for a party, and then go. Actives spend hours preparing every last detail beforehand, and then do membership selection afterward. |

This morning I attended pref at Anaheim Angels and Anaheim Ducks. (Coincidence? lol) Both ceremonies were beautiful and I could honestly see myself at either one.
I found out my very sweet, down to Earth Rho Gamma was from Oakland Athletics. I had actually ranked them low the first day because the girls seemed very girly and heavily made up. What a surprise! Today I opened my bid to find an invitation from the very first house I had visited during recruitment and my last pref ceremony: Anaheim Ducks! OTHERWISE KNOWN AS... ... ... ALPHA DELTA PI at UCLA! http://www.greeklife.ucla.edu/images/ADPiHouse.jpg I also found out 3 other transfers I got close to during the week went ADPi as well! Thanks for reading! :) <> |
