Facebook Status Updates on Recruitment

I really can't believe some of the things that I see PNMs write on Facebook.
They list their favorite houses
They list those who released them
and then, I see hysterical posts:
  • "I'm trying out for XYZ",
  • "Bid Day Blows" (doubt she got her first choice),
  • "I could potentially become a sorority girl today",
  • "I want to go to bid day but I sort of feel like death",
  • "Should I straighten my hair or leave it straight for bid day"
  • "Just woke up from my Bid Day Coma...holy crap!" (ok, that was a guy)
And then there is the "Friend" who writes,
  • "U R N a whyte grl sorority?" (that one had me peeing my pants)
Part of me says, watch what you post. The other half says, keep it up because I love the entertainment.

Scully 09-13-2010 08:12 PM

I've seen that, too. A "friend" writes, "I love XYZ!" Just because you party with them now, does not guarantee a bid later.

KSUViolet06 09-13-2010 09:15 PM

See also: Twitter updates about recruitment.

I think a lot of PNMs see Twitter as some sort of "safe zone" regarding recruitment (moreso than FB).

Not so.

Examples:

@PattyPNM: OMG if I don't get a bid to XYZ, I might like legit die.

@PennyPNM: Just left AAA's party...so lame #overit.

@SuzieJones: Just came from partying w/ @BigStateXYZ's. Can't wait to join in the spring [this school has deferred recruitment]

It's hilarious. It's as if they think Twitter is invisible.

I guess they aren't aware the Library of Congress is archiving all public tweets. Maybe we can research recruitment fails in the future by going to the library.

When Doves Cry 09-13-2010 10:00 PM

I remember last year, right before pref night, I went to check the facebooks of the girls I was planning on preffing. One of them had written that she was dropping out because she only got invited back to "the sh*t houses"... And sure enough, come pref night, her name was called & she wasn't there! :(

That's just rude of her. Even if you dislike a house, why would you slam it so horribly? Obviously there are people who *do* like it!

When Doves Cry 09-13-2010 10:23 PM

What's really funny is throughout the summer, we had been messaging back & forth because she had questions about recruitment and whatnot. And she KNEW what chapter I was in & she acted so grateful for all my help, but I guess that didn't count for anything!

thetygerlily 09-13-2010 10:32 PM

Add this to the list of things that make me feel old. My senior year was the first recruitment season that my school (back when it was restricted to certain schools) had FB. I remember someone's FB pictures & status updates heavily influencing my opinion of one PNM in particular.

Now to fill my boredom / can't focus on work times, I'm going to check out the public FB posts and Twitter.

KSUViolet06 09-13-2010 10:59 PM

Another social media platform that PNMs think is some sort of safe zone to discuss recruitment: their personal blogs! [Wordpress/Blogspot/LJ/Tumblr/whatever]

Your PUBLIC blog, that is linked to both your PUBLIC Twitter and PUBLIC FB page is not magically invisible.

So, when you post things like "FCUK XY for cutting me. I'm soooo over all the other chapters I have left" don't be surprised if your remaining chapters see it and decide to get over you the next round.

Most of those are pretty bad, but the "I could potentially become a sorority girl today" one is kinda cute! At least she's realistic and open minded and not being negative.

Gusteau 09-13-2010 11:36 PM

Oh man this is endless fun:

Dumb PNM: Just want it to be bid day already, rush is annoying!
--->Friend: why is it annoying?
--->Dumb PNM: because it's long as hell you walk from house to house and talk to a shit ton of girls and 90% of it is fake and you end up repeating the same shit a million times. and by the end of the day you wanna kill someone. and they sing to you lol.

Right. You're sure to get a bid with that attitude...

Aw, I think the straighten my hair one is just sort of goofy and cute. :)

I saw someone do the former a few days ago. She's a dirty slut so I just shook my head.

Bad form to both, though.

Ok, I have to ask because I see it ALL THE TIME NOW...what is the # about?? Does it hotlink something on Tw*tter or something?

LucyKKG 09-14-2010 05:58 AM

Yeah, the # is like a keyword kind of thing. It links trending topics, so if you're talking the 49er game, you can see other people talking about it, too.

Thanks. I feel less clueless now. Old, but less clueless.

twinkle555 09-14-2010 08:58 AM

I didnt see hardly anything "incriminating" on FB this year...the only exceptions were from a girl who got dropped and bashed everything sorority related (she was realllllllllllly strange, like she should go in the weird rush story thread) and a girl who originally said she wanted to go KD, then one of the Pan members told her to keep an open mind so she deleted that status(ironically, she went DG).

hijack, but tons!!

It seems that all the high school seniors in my town have the mentality that joining a sorority is as simple as signing the clipboard to the group that they like the most. I try my best to educate them but it falls on deaf ears because of course they know more about the process than I do.

Then, when they are dropped (because they thought they only needed 3 recs to an SEC school) they return to FB and complain what judgmental biotches sorority members are.

thetygerlily 09-14-2010 01:19 PM

This is an awesome time drain. These cracked me up for one reason or another...
  • Soooo.... I think im gunna join a sorrority.. [XYZ]... Whatdda u ladies & gents think???
    • Where [School]?? Absolutely not yuck!!
    • Really?? did u go there? r they bad?
    • I went to [School], my bf still goes there, atleast wait a year or two til some girls leave
  • alas! i thought i was safe from sorority recruitment, but those vile felines hath layed siege upon the music building! their shrill shrieks penetrate even my soundproof audio studio fortress - this is my last stand, i utter my final words. i loveth mine family, and my friends, and i'll miss thee, and i only wish my demise wouldst have been anything other than scantily clad skanks chanting to mine peril
  • Thank you diet pepsi, candy, aspirin and boston coffee for a successful sorority recruitment....
  • wanted to squirrel dive off the Biz bldg today listening to this sorority girl talk about rush-just sayin...
  • Sorority rush = hella annoying in sync :)
  • (Insert witty line incorporating your house's letters and sorority rush being over)
  • Sorority Rush Weekend = College Girl Parade.... yup, life is good
  • I hate thursday night homework...and the sorority pledges won't stop cheering. i hate rush week and its already the first day. major downside to living in sorority row
  • Sorority rush today was awesome except for me tripping and falling and scraping my knee so bad it ripped my pants and my face hit the pavement too! I don't know how I'm gonna choose a sorority they are all so nice!
  • shall I rush?? Hmm.....i dunno....shall I risk punching a preppy skinny sorority cheerleader in the face?......decisions decisions....
But this one is really cute...
  • Today was the last day of rush! It was both wonderful and emotional. I never knew something could mean so much. I can't wait to see which sorority I will get to be apart of tomorrow and I can't wait to meet my new sisters! ♥
ETA a nice philanthropy discussion:
  • I'm going through sorority rush recruitment this weekend but still not sure whether i should join one or not...
    • We don't have either of those here at [school] but isn't [XYZ's] philanthropy something to do with deaf people or awareness?
    • umm no its with the poeple that are told they are going to die... i cant remember the word so that sounded really harsh

ErinBee 09-14-2010 05:15 PM

Fall 2009 was the year that we had an overload of dumb Facebook statuses. I can't tell you how many girls had where they wanted to go on their statuses on the SECOND day. And then they act shocked when they get cut from the other houses. Hello, we check Facebook too and our feelings get hurt too.

agzg 09-14-2010 05:22 PM

LOL at this one on t_witter:
AGD recruitment is like orientation for squirrels #squirrelpower

Oh so, so true.

LMFAO:
What I thought was street evangelism was just sorority recruitment.

Oh man, girl posting on t_witter that she's not happy about her bid, and lists the chapter... oh man. And WTF at all the AKA interests posting?

This is killing my productivity.

Benzgirl 09-14-2010 09:41 PM

Someone that is really stressed out:
"Can u Say one of the Biggest Decisions of my life!! I might just have insomnia tonight lol Tomorrow = BID Day. omg."

This one left me going ???
"Just shot RST's Bid day. Great pictures to come. Was much more comfortable than Bid Day 2009."

From an alum...
"I DO NOT LIKE BID DAY!! think i have spent the entire day on the phone......"

This one made me laugh
"only reason i got out of bed today...it's bid day, sleeping thru the suspense isnt possible"

And then, I have nothing more to say
OP: "So I prayed to God that I want a career that would give me the opportunity to help women...I think joining a sorority was my calling... Can't wait for bid day tomorrow!"
Friend: You should look into mary kay!....

Benzgirl 09-15-2010 12:56 PM

Twitter status from a current member:

AMEN to that.

And, just curious - where do you find these crazy updates on FB? Not that I'd want to go look for myself or anything... not like I have that kind of time... *cough* (or should it be *eyeroll* directed at myself?)

Baby alcoholics? Oh boy, what a way to utilize social media for positive PR, huh?

Add me to the bunch who hates the "baby" whatevers. They AREN'T BABIES for crying out loud. This has been going on for what, a decade or so now? Enough already!

Me too. It drives me crazy (not to mention the fact that our HQ discourages it). They are adults. Heck, a NM could potentially be older than some of the women who are calling her a "baby violet."

I'm not the "meanie alumna who corrects our terminology" by any means, but that is the one term that I will correct if a VP is using it on one of our calls, and I will be the "meanie alumna who ruins our fun plans" if your bid day shirt ideas involve shirts saying "baby violet." No, I don't care if every other chapter on your campus uses some variation of "baby _____."

AZ-AlphaXi 09-15-2010 08:13 PM

I'm with you'all I HATE the "baby whatevers" .. they're not babies!!

We've always done it and it's never bothered me. I didn't mind being a Baby Squirrel at 18...thought it was kinda cute.

BraveMaroon 09-15-2010 10:32 PM

I spent four years in college fighting the use of "girls" rather than "women" - I lost that battle.

The "baby dove" thing makes me a little squeamish, just because... have you ever seen a recently hatched bird? Not super cute.

Ditto. Plus as having a sister-mother implies that you're a child. In my chapter it only lasts up to initiation anyways and no one obsessively brings it up.

I've noticed a lot of AGD chapters say "sister-mom" and "sister-daughter" instead of big and little. Is that unique to AGD?

While a number of chapters do use the terms Big/Little Sister, all of our new member education materials specifically say "Sister-mother" and "Sister-daughter," so those terms are the official ones used, and they do trace back to our founders. I actually looked through archive materials at IHQ and found the term "sister-mother" in things from 1904.

It's been an ongoing battle for years to get people to use the right terms, but I think the powers that be have finally decided to quit sweating the small stuff. Volunteers are expected to use correct terminology, but we aren't to get in a hissy if it's not used.

Why/since when are Alpha Phi pledges called angels? I've only heard of Pi Phi pledges being called baby angels, because ya know, one of their actual symbols is an angel. If anything, our pledges have been called baby Phis.
