European Countries Recruitment Story :-)

Hello! So I may have given away where I'm going to school in a different thread, and if you know, please don't spread it around, for security reasons. Anyway, tomorrow is orientation, and I'm very excited!

Here is a list of the houses at my school:
Germany
France
Italy
Spain
Poland
Russia
Greece
Sweden
Hungary
Portugal
Slovakia
Denmark
Finland
Lithuania
Slovenia
Bulgaria
Croatia

Hope it'll go well!

AOIIBuckeye 09-11-2010 01:42 AM

Ooo, I'll vote for my family heritige: Germany and Greece! Good luck :)

GammaPhi1874 09-11-2010 01:53 AM

Germany and Italy! :) Good luck!

DubaiSis 09-11-2010 02:30 AM

I'm going to root for the ones nobody knows anything about - Slovenia and Bulgaria.

Tulip86 09-11-2010 04:29 AM

No Holland? :(
I'll root for Denmark then! Good luck and have a great time!

indygphib 09-11-2010 08:51 AM

I'm pulling for my heritage: Poland and Germany!

sigmahn173 09-11-2010 09:35 AM

Germany, Poland, and Denmark! Good luck!

Benzgirl 09-11-2010 10:10 AM

I never hear too much about Bulgaria and that is my background, so I'm pulling for them all the way. Good luck in recruitment.

greekxgal 09-11-2010 07:34 PM

haha I just used the countries that came to mind!
well, I finished up orientation, and I thought it went pretty well. We have I think about 20 girls in our group? I didn't count though lol. And we have two Rho Chis, but I already know which chapter one of the girls belongs to because I talked to her during Greek Weekend, and she was very memorable lol, just cuz some ppl stuck out more than others. I will not even mention to anyone that I know what chapter she's from.
I will update you on what's going on for the first round either Monday or Tuesday night, hopefully.

thetygerlily 09-11-2010 08:08 PM

Aww, no Wales? :D it is one of the most beautiful European countries I've been to, reminds me of the Pacific Northwest (not that I'm biased of course). Instead how about somewhere I'd love to go... Let's go Croatia!

Best of luck with your actual recruitment. I think your code is very appropriate- all sororities have core commonalities yet their own distint personalities, interests, and focus. Just like all the European countries. Now I need to plan a trip...

greekxgal 09-13-2010 02:19 PM

*EDIT*
I won't update until I am done. :-)

MollyMoon 09-15-2010 02:04 PM

the suspense is killing me!

APhi4Ever 09-15-2010 05:06 PM

I'll root for my background with Poland and Germany.

Me too! Polski & Deutsche.

greekxgal 09-16-2010 01:51 AM

Sorry guys lol I'm just nervous about someone finding this and getting cut altogether, especially since I got way less invites back than most other ppl. But I know some ppl who also got just a few invites, so hmm...
Please pray that I will make it until bid day! I am VERY happy with the chapters I got invites back from though

perfectinpurple 09-16-2010 11:02 AM

Good Luck!

FSUZeta 09-16-2010 03:42 PM

we support your decision, wish you luck and hope to hear good news from you soon.

greekxgal 09-16-2010 04:26 PM

Hey guys. Well, unfortunately, formal recruitment is over for me :-(
I will reveal myself now. I will be a freshman at the University of Washington. I was invited back to only two houses for house tours, Greece and Bulgaria, which were Chi Omega and Sigma Kappa. I enjoyed them so much but I could tell I wasn't going to be invited back because i didn't stand out at all. Maybe a sorority just isn't right for me :-/ I mean, now that I think about it, I didn't have an outstanding GPA (just 3.6), I never played sports, never had a job, and I said umm and yawned a lot during round 1 cuz I was so tired. But I wasn't fake...OK maybe a little bit, but everyone was.
Now I'm going to be in temporary housing. I don't know where yet. I signed up for informal recruitment. I don't think any chapters will be participating except for Alpha Epsilon Phi, which is a charter that is colonizing now.

I don't know anyone else except for myself who has ever been released from UW formal recruitment. I got way less invites back than other ppl I know, most of whom had almost a full schedule. But then again, they are way more well-rounded than I am. I don't understand why they are releasing this year, I heard they didn't really do it before, and that it was rare. Unless I'm part of that group.

I guarantee you, you are NOT the first person to be released from UW formal rush.

Not sure if UW is using RFM but that could have contibuted to more women being cut than usual.

And to reference your post in the other thread, "guaranteed bid" does not mean that anyone who participates in rush gets a bid. Only one school in the country does that and it isn't UW. It means if you maximize your options in every round and make it through until pref, in the end you will receive a bid from one of the groups whose pref party you went to. It does not mean women can't be released completely.

I'm sorry things didn't work out for you.

greekxgal 09-16-2010 06:22 PM

What is RFM? But yeah I am pretty sure they have cut women before, but it seems like more are being cut this year cuz apparently my RC had to make a few phone calls over the last couple of days to inform people that they have been dropped.
I'm just so disappointed because of the money I spent on this and how long I've been looking forward to it. I mean, I think I even overdid it but how obsessed/excited I was for rush.
Now I'm hoping that informal recruitment will go well for me, and maybe I will become a member of Alpha Epsilon Phi and be a member of the colonization process!

The RFM is a little complicated to explain in one post, but it generally means that there is a method used to decide how many PNMs a chapter can invite back (based on things like return rates, chapter size, and a lot of complicated things that PNMs shouldn't really worry about).

I'm really sorry that this happened to you. Please keep us posted on how things go with either informal or the AEPhi colony recruitment.

greekxgal 09-17-2010 01:30 AM

OK, I sure will! I believe I will be able to find out more information around the 20th, so just a few days. I really liked the girls of AEPhi (we got to visit for round 1), they were so nice! I think it would be an amazing experience to be a part of a colonizing chapter.

DubaiSis 09-17-2010 02:26 AM

Here are a couple things to keep in mind. You have options ahead of you, including going through again next year. If you think you are not outstanding enough (your grade point probably wasn't the problem) that is something you can easily work on this year. Get involved on campus and make friends! Really go out of your way to make lots of friends. And yawning, by the way, is a stress thing, not just fatigue. If you get your conversation skills up to snuff you probably won't yawn as much, even if you're tired, because you'll be more comfortable.

Of course I can't judge your appearance, but if you do want to try again next year, I would pay close attention this year to how you look in class, out shopping, etc. Even if you're not the prettiest girl on the block, if you always look put together you will make a positive impression.

And make sure you keep those grades up! Freshman year can be a real killer to the grades if you're not careful. But joining study groups is not only helpful to your grades, it's helpful to friendship building and conversation skills.

And if it works out for you to join the AEPhi colony, that's great too! I wish you the best of luck.

greekxgal 09-17-2010 07:53 PM

If I don't get to make it to be a part of the AEPhi colony or any other sorority through informal, then I will definitely go through formal recruitment again. Going Greek is something I have looked forward to for a long time, years actually.
I don't really know what I could do to improve my appearance. I am very classy about the way I dress, I love to look good, I wear make-up, I'm defintily a total girly girl lol... the thing is, I feel like a lot of the girls getting most of the invites back weren't necessarily beautiful, but fake. I saw a lot of fake tans, fake eyelashes, heavy make-up, and some girls teeth looked like they were veneers.
I am hoping freshman year will go well, I have always been a good studier.

33girl 09-17-2010 08:20 PM

Don't put it all on your appearance. Concentrate on getting to know women in sororities - not just because you want a bid, but because they are people you genuinely want to be friends with. Get involved in other clubs and extracurriculars on campus. Have fun at parties, but don't be slutty. :)

greekxgal 09-18-2010 09:26 PM

OK, I will try that. I really don't know how COB works at UW, but I did submit the paperwork for it.

FSUZeta 09-19-2010 07:28 PM

as 33 suggested, do get involved on campus in an organization or two. you will make friends, grow as a person and have fun. work hard to keep your grades up.
