The Amazing Race 17

Here we go!

The premiere is September 26.

One team consists of a birth mother and the daughter she gave up for adoption. And yes, we have a former Miss USA contestant and a former Miss America contestant. But unless I missed it, no mactors.

I miss nittanyalum. :(

What's a mactor?

Are they two actors dating each other, therefore they "mack" on each other?
Or a mock actor?

A model/actor, especially one who goes on a reality show in an attempt to get noticed.

PeppyGPhiB 09-02-2010 05:29 PM

But I did see at least one bartender.

ComradesTrue 09-02-2010 05:52 PM

The birth mother and birth daughter pledged the same sorority at UGA! They did not say which one, but I am sure that our GC sleuths will have that solved in no time flat.

In their interview they said that when they meet on the starting line it will only be the 3rd time that they have ever seen each other. Based on the interview I really like them. We will see.

(and I miss nittany too...)

ETA: It doesn't look like they are Thetas.

Kappamd 09-02-2010 06:15 PM

Not Kappa

thetygerlily 09-02-2010 06:36 PM

Looks like ZTA.

I only watched their video, but it seemed like Jenna was really uncomfortable and kept looking off to the side. When she was able to talk she was great, but looked awkward when her bio mom was talking. Maybe it was just the cameras?

Yes Jenna is a Zeta from UGA. I found her on the sister site. Her mom on the other hand wasn't there. She could have left UGA before intiation.

gee_ess 09-05-2010 08:56 AM

How awkward and difficult is it going to be for them to compete having spent so little time together?? Could also be awkward and difficult to watch...not to mention, if it goes south, how negative this could be for adoptees, etc.

(but maybe I am reading too much into it, I am only on my first cup of coffee)

I actually "know" Andie from a different board. She's awesome. Has 10 other kids...

LaneSig 09-07-2010 01:44 PM

I just glanced throught the cast. Kevin, of the father/son duo, is one of my favorite subscriptions on YouTube. He has a couple of sites, the one I remember is KevJumbo. His father appears in Kevin's videos quite a lot. They are both sophomorically funny. I'm wondering if Amazing Race approached them?

SWTXBelle 09-08-2010 03:58 PM

Gamma Phi contestant!

Katie Seamon is a Gamma Phi from Rutgers.

Remember this starts tonight! (Just a friendly bump from a die-hard Race fan.) :P

Psi U MC Vito 09-26-2010 04:30 PM

I miss having TV lol.

Kappamd 09-26-2010 06:53 PM

Just FYI, it is now at 8:30 because CBS finally wised up and realized football never ends on time. Or, at least it is this week.

AGDee 09-26-2010 07:33 PM

And it STILL isn't going to be on time. This is SO annoying. I have learned now though and I scheduled both TAR and Undercover Boss on the DVR so it will capture both shows and the whole thing. I really wish they would put TAR on a different night. They moved Survivor this year, why not move TAR??????

So for those not watching football on CBS: 60 Minutes started at 7:50 so TAR will start at 8:50 and is 1.5 hours long this week.

Could Nick and Vicki be any more ignorant? I hesitate to say stupid - but never heard of Stonehenge? Really?

eta - YES! They could be! They are in the country of LONDON!

Totally agree! I did a doubletake when Vicki said that! Clearly, Phil has picked up on their stupidity. And, to think, they beat out the best guy friends who were so gracious at the end! Tragic!

DaffyKD 09-27-2010 12:59 AM

Nick and Vickie seem to be that they would be the first couple in the history Amazing Race who end up in the wrong country and don't realize it.

I was laughing so hard.

I also laughed (and groaned) at Chad. Why is it that some people, when they are being stupid, have to claim that the task is stupid?

ETA: Totally liking Team Glee -- and Connor apparently was also student body president at Princeton. Also, for the first time I can remember, I think I genuinely like the pageant racer.

Brooke really needs to stop talking once in a while. And the volley ball girls are making a strong play to qualify as Team Obnoxious as far as I'm concerned.

My favorite moment in the entire episode was Phil's response to them. You could almost see his thought process- <WTF?? Come on. Wait.. they're serious? There is no reasoning with them.> "Yes, the country of London." Loved it. Go Phil.

I know it happens every season, but the nicknames also crack me up. Glee, Pixie & Pan, Sunshine, Gilmore Girls... but hey, helps me keep them straight too!

Oh and the watermelon? OW. You knew someone was going to get hit in some way, but that was intense. At least if she develops a fear of watermelon it won't seem very irrational.

It was Tinkerbell and Pan. Peter Pan, presumably.

thetygerlily 09-27-2010 12:35 PM

You're probably right- I knew it didn't sound quite right but couldn't remember. I just remember looking at her haircut and saying "oh, okay, I get it"!

Always AlphaGam 09-27-2010 03:15 PM

Whenever a new season starts, I immediately dislike teams that consist of dating couples. I don't know why. I just can't stand them. Already we've got a screamer. And don't get me started on Tink and Pan.

No real favorites yet, but I do dig Chinese dad and son and the QVC girls at the moment. Anyone who gets whacked in the face by a watermelon gets an A+ from me.

I called the thespian friends getting the first boot before the episode started. :p

(On a side note, I like that they chose Gloucester, MA for the start of the race. I don't think I've ever seen sunshine over that city.)

AGDee 10-04-2010 09:04 AM

I missed the last 12 minutes. I know who came in first but I don't know who was last/eliminated. I really need for my daughter to pass her driver's test so I don't have to pick her up at 9 pm all the time :(

DeltaBetaBaby 10-04-2010 09:30 AM

Andie and Jenna were eliminated. But for all their BS about this being their only time together, they are going to have plenty of time to bond in sequester.

MysticCat 10-04-2010 09:37 AM

Chad was like a different person last night -- upbeat, easy going. What happened?

Meanwhile, Thomas fell a notch for me when he criticized Jill for caring about whether people could afford the sun glasses. I mean, I assume (hope) the producers put the 3 cedi requirement at a reasonable price, but still he could show a little gratitude that he's with someone who cares about others.

AGDee 10-11-2010 09:09 AM

Someone needs some anger management treatment, eh?

I'm glad this was a non-elimination round.

I'm not happy that football went a full hour over.

Seriously. Idiot- she can't breathe. Yelling at her doesn't help. Or wait, is severe stress a cure for asthma?

Kevin, on the other hand, was pure class with his dad.

DeltaBetaBaby 10-12-2010 03:50 PM

When team Glee referred to their first symbol as "kidney beans," all I could think was, "that kid's never seen a vagina".

MysticCat 10-18-2010 11:19 AM

I was so sad to see Team Glee come in last. Why, oh why, couldn't it have been the Team Volleyball? I hope that if TAR does another All-Star season, they ask Team Glee back.

Yeah, but to leave the pit stop in first place and still come in last? Pathetic; they deserve to go. Maybe if Connor had a real partner, things would have been different.

Can't argue too much. And they had an hour lead when they left the pitstop.

Their first mistake was not looking for an earlier flight before it was too late; they should have done that immediately. Their second mistake was not switching tasks sooner.

Still, I enjoyed watching them race.

CutiePie2000 10-19-2010 01:13 AM

For Team Glee and their "Princeton this, Princeton that..." I guess Princeton doesn't do anything to teach "street smarts".

I loved it when the guy from the tattoo couple asked the cab driver in Ghana to take him to the Arctic Circle. How dumb can a person be?

Remember, this is the same team that thinks London is a country. Loved Nikki's line that they are physical competitors, but don't do well when it is mental.

Yeah, I was actually kind of glad. They are entertaining.

And they were the only ones we saw do the music challenge intelligently -- one piece at a time.

Of course, the musician in me was rooting for at least one person to listen to all three Gramophones and then say "okay, we need to find "Pictures at an Exhibition," "Scheherazade" and Tchaikovsky's "Troika."

Lol, Mr. DBB was watching with me, and he said the same thing. I thought he was going to throw things through the screen. The other thing that was unclear (as I was studying at the time): did they have the real sheet music? That also should have helped at least a team or two.

Kevin, you'd better start listening to your dad every now and then. You just cost yourself a Travelocity trip.

adpi*violet 11-08-2010 12:35 AM

Ok... my dvr cut it off right as the last two teams were racing to Phil. What happened? Did M and K get a penalty? What about the bags for C and S?

And why didn't the las vegas team have a speed bump?
