Recruitment Story

Rush

excelblue 09-01-2010 06:00 AM

Really looking forward to your story. I wonder how it'd compare to all the others on this site (in terms of drama, process, etc.)

You get a different viewpoint when you've actually seen the context in person. GO BEARS!

AZTheta 09-01-2010 09:58 AM

GO BEARS! love a UC story, no matter what the campus is. Looking forward to reading yours.

thetygerlily 09-01-2010 01:50 PM

Welcome to GC- thanks for joining and sharing your story with us! And I for one would love to hear about the Bachelor skit if you have time. But the recruitment stuff definitely takes priority :D

I'm joining TexasSK in rooting for the great social sciences of Sociology and Psychology, since Anthropology wasn't an option.

aephi alum 09-01-2010 02:04 PM

Your "Nerd School Recruitment" title made me wonder if you were going to rush at MIT. LOL.

Good luck!

AOIIBuckeye 09-01-2010 03:38 PM

I'm rooting for Biology and Chemistry, since that's what I deal with on a daily basis :)

I liked how they had little quarter bathrooms in between rooms.
What's a quarter bathroom? Just a sink?

Yay! I can't wait to hear the end of this story! I wrote a rec for a girl that ended up as a new Kappa Alpha Theta at Berkeley this year! So exciting!

dukemama 09-03-2010 01:00 PM

I'm rooting for Music, so I'm glad (at this point) you're still loving them!

little piece of trivia: Julia Morgan, architect for Hearst Castle & the first female architecture student at École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, as well as the first female licensed architect in CA, was an Omega chapter member of Kappa Alpha Theta at UCBerkeley. She also designed the Kappa Alpha Theta Omega chapter house.

LucyKKG 09-03-2010 02:08 PM

I'm actually a bit familiar with this campus even though I usually don't recognize any houses in a story. I'm imagining you in my head walking all over the hills to each house. :D Yay!

Ucacheer2213 09-03-2010 02:22 PM

Write more please!!! :) :) Loving the the story so far! :)

I was kind of scared coz 7 was two below quota, and I didn’t think it was a good sign at all. Even though most of us Sophomores all got 7 houses on our schedules, it was still a little depressing.

The good thing was all the houses I loved, Music, Psychology, Physics, Engineering, all invited me back! =) So I was very happy about that and it soothed the panic down just a little.

Quota is the maximum number of women a chapter may take in formal recruitment, not the maximum number of chapters a PNM may visit for a given round.

Even though you only had 7 instead of 9, it looks like you got what you wanted for the most part. :)

FleurGirl 09-03-2010 06:35 PM

Can't wait to read more! Good luck! :)

rollthedice 09-03-2010 06:39 PM

I've been reading this and really enjoying it.

Best of luck =)

MerryGPhiB 09-04-2010 08:03 PM

Excited to hear the next step... and by the way... GO BEARS!!

thetygerlily 09-04-2010 10:15 PM

I love the level of detail you shared for Pref. It is hands down my favorite night, but we usually get less detail to keep the code. I think you handled it beautifully!

And even better, it sounds like you have two fantastic options for bid day! Sometimes it's hard to figure out which voice is your head, which is your heart, and which is a third party. Again, executed beautifully. Can't wait to see where you wind up!

Side note- the maximum number of bids you can get from formal recruitment is one. Only in COB is it possible to get more than one. Just how formal works :) there may be exceptions of course, but...

AOIIBuckeye 09-04-2010 10:29 PM

AHHH I'm dying to hear the rest! And I loved your description of Preference round, by the way :)

Sunshine91 09-04-2010 10:29 PM

Oooh I want to know more! I rushed at Berkeley this fall as a Junior exchange student and I have an inkling who French is (sounds like my pref night) but I'm not totally sure!

Don't worry about the cut thing - I had that too and I was never sure whether it was just because I'd only be there for a year/or they just didn't like me. I had 6/9 in the 2nd day, 4/6 on philanthropy night and and 1/3 on preference. Most of the girls in my group (juniors) had 8 or all 9 on the first day, so I did feel a bit self-conscious that day. And pref was touching but a little weird as I knew I was already guaranteed a bid from them but they didn't know! But in the end having fewer made it easier to choose! But I ended up with one of my two favourites, so I am happy! But I think it's true the houses you tend to click with best are the ones that invite you back!

Hello, Sunshine -- I remember you! :) Did you get a bid? Where did you land up?

The colloquial term is "suicide" as a verb. Jane suicided. Not Jane committed suicide.:)

For example if #1, #2, #3 all give you a bid, you will only receive the bid from #1, and you won’t know if #2 or #3 has given you a bid or not even if they do.)

In formal recruitment, PNMs are only matched to one chapter. It is possible to match to a different chapter depending on how you rank them, if you are high on all 3 lists. It is also possible to match with your first choice and be lower on their list than you are on your 2nd or 3rd choice. However, if a chapter invites you to pref, they are willing to give you a bid. You are on their bid list, somewhere.

I really enjoyed your decriptions of pref. I think you ranked them correctly, based on your accounts. It's also good that you'd be happy in either. Also, I'd just like to point out that it's pretty rare (or at least we don't have many PNMs say this on GC) for a PNM to not have a full schedule but to have been asked back to chapters she wanted most. Kudos to you for your self-awareness.

DubaiSis 09-05-2010 02:12 AM

Violet is right. The fact that you never lost your favorites is remarkable. Who cares if you didn't have a full schedule? In years to come you will see this as the amazing thing it is, when right now you're just seeing yourself as not as popular.

Congratulations so far! You didn't tell us if you are guaranteed a bid if you maximize your options. I thought with RFM that is always the case, but I don't know nearly enough about the process, or even if Berkeley is using RFM.

excelblue 09-05-2010 02:21 AM

The twelve sororities are different, so the better you fit into one group, the worse you fit into the others.

I'd be surprised if OP didn't end up joining French.

I laughed really hard at this and shouldn't have.

Jobellesis 09-05-2010 06:28 PM

What an exuberant personality the op has!

twinkle555 09-05-2010 06:53 PM
