"Go by the mother's race b/c with minorities the father isn't generally in the home."

Thinking about running for eighth grade class president at Nettleton Middle School in Nettleton, Mississippi? Well... are you white? Because only white kids are allowed to run for president. Black kids can be vice-president, though! But only black kids. A few days ago, Nettleton Middle School students brought home the following memo, which spells out the requirements for students who want to run for class office: http://pics.livejournal.com/txvoodoo/pic/004ww95x When one Nettleton mother approached the school board, wondering—among other things, obviously—which "category" her mixed-race kids (Italian and Native American) fell under, she was told the following: Quote:

i don't have anything else to say that i haven't said in chat.
unbelievable. |
MMITY?
|
The whole thing is infuriating, but I made the one comment the headline because it absolutely floored me.
|
For some reason I am not surprised.
However, I am LOL at only being able to get elected to VP in 8th grade. Like the black kids get a promotion after 2 grades in Reporter and Treasurer. |
You notice how 8th grade is the only one with more then one black position?

Oh wait, they go off the mother. Sarah Palin couldn't be VP here. |
And I'm done.

What percentage of the student body is made up by blacks? Maybe the concern is that unless there are positions reserved for blacks, there will be none in student government? To that extent, it could simply be a simplified Affirmative Action sort of policy.
As to the method of determining race, however, lol. |
uhh.

A social experiment.

HEH! |
What is reporter, anyway? Is that secretary? Reporter sounds stupid.
I guess it's not possible this school is populated by a lot of people with the last names Black and White and this is last year's election results. |
<insert doggie confused head turn>

And maybe the reporter announces class news or something, I'm not really sure. Looks like treasurer and secretary are the same though. |

This doesn't make a lick o' sense!! |
It was updated. They changed the policy.

Same school also required racially balanced homecoming courts. And by balanced I mean one white and one black candidate (or winner?) for each class. It's just weird. Oh and the quote I used as the title still has no excuse. |

Was that for real?
I'm not sure where Nettleton (I grew up in the 'Sip) but goodness - did a group of people really sit around and think that was a good idea? Wow. |
This can't be real. Is it?
|
Totally real. 100%, check the sources.

:confused:My mother talked about situations like this when she was in middle school (small school, small town, Alabama), and said most people she knew thought it was behind the times even back then in small town Alabama (I don't remember when exactly that was, but let's say at least 35-40 years ago). So how in the hell did someone put this plan into action in 2010?
|
Affirmative Action is it not.
Now Quotas... Yeah... Dedicated positions according to race? Yeah--quota. Wait! It looks more like segregation to me... Where was this? Oh yeah...Why am I not surprised? Oh well. So much for being post-racial... |
What about the other races?
