A Hogwarts Recruitment
With recruitment approximately 2 weeks away, I've decided to start my thread now.
I've seen invaluable advice reading GC for the past few months and I'm so excited to be going through recruitment very soon! The 7 sororities will be named after subjects you might take at Hogwarts Potions Defense Against the Dark Arts Transfiguration Herbology Charms Care of Magical Creatures Divination I hope to give lots of detail when I recap my days, but also to make it very concise (that's one thing my writing has always been lacking) so that it's easy to follow. I haven't yet decided if I'll post it live, or live-ish, or just wait until it's all over. Personally, I prefer to read stories that are posted all at once so that I don't have to check/search for a live thread hourly for updates :P However, I'm very impatient and probably won't want to wait to post (hence why I'm already starting my thread :D) Hopefully my story will be as enjoyable and as useful as some of the wonderful stories I've read on here. |
Good luck! I'm pulling for Potions! (I love the theme, a big HP fan here!)

Prologue to my story:
So I know at least 1 girl from each house (I'm a sophmore), which I wish I didn't. I'm jealous of the freshman girls going in with a blank slate and getting to form their own opinions. However I'm obviously staying very open minded (thanks to GC ;)) and I know I'll be happy wherever I end up. Also I have at least 2 friends (if not more) rushing with me and I really hope that we all magically end up in the same house, though I doubt that will happen...But it'll still be fun to go through the experience with them. one week left, give or take a few days..need to get my outfits ready. |
I really love this theme!
Good luck, can't wait to hear how it goes! |
Here we go...ROUND ONE:
Potions- They seemed very experienced in rushing. The girls were very enthusiastic and nice. The conversations were pretty basic, but most importantly I felt comfortable here, and the president explained the significance of their letters, which I thought was really cool. I left liking this one. Defense Against the Dark Arts- I did not like this one at all. I’m very disappointed as I was expecting to like it based on what I’ve known about it before. We barely talked about the sorority, which is fine, except for that everything that I know about this sorority is just what I’ve read on the website, and nothing that the girls told me. I didn’t click with the girls very well; our conversations were kind of dull and overall I didn’t get a good feeling. Transfiguration-These girls were enthusiastic too. Their philanthropy events sound really fun and I had a chance to talk to a few of them. Even though I was comfortable I didn’t have a lot in common with the girls and I couldn’t really see myself as being part of their sorority. Herbology- I felt relaxed around these girls and didn’t feel like I had to keep smiling. It was definitely one of the more casual houses. I had a chance to talk to quite a bit of them and they gave really good answers to the questions I asked them. This one was one of my favorites. Charms- This one was another favorite. I felt pretty relaxed (even though it was the last house we visited, and I was getting a headache) and the girl I was talking to seemed very different from anyone else because she was very natural and didn’t just smile the whole time. One of their philanthropy events sounds interesting and different and I definitely want to participate in it. Care of Magical Creatures- I was paired with a girl who I knew at first, so it was very casual and relaxed, when they switched off, the next girl had really great things to say. Their philanthropy events sound like the most fun. One of the girls I talked to (the third one?) didn’t seem interested in formal recruitment and was kind of sarcastic about it, which put me off. I really don’t know how I feel about this one, I like it on one hand but I’m afraid that I’m not 100% comfortable with them. Divination- Relaxed conversations, we talked about a wide variety of things. I don’t think I have too much in common with them but I felt comfortable enough. Their philanthropy events are cool. I really liked all of the girls I talked to but I don’t think I could fit into this house very well even though I liked it a lot. In the end I realized that all of the girls I talked to were nice (duh), enthusiastic(duh) so I had to base my rankings on how comfortable I felt at the houses, the philanthropies, and if I could see myself hanging out with these girls. I thought really really hard and it was a tough decision. My bottom 2 were obvious and I had top 5, but we had to rank 4 of them as number 1, and the bottom 3 as 2, 3, 4. In the end I put: (top 4 in no particular order) 1. Potions 1. Herbology 1. Charms 1. Care of Magical Creatures 2. Divination 3. Transfiguration 4. Defense Against the Dark Arts- It was really hard deciding between Care of Magical Creatures and Divination, I crossed it out and changed it many times and on the way home I kept rethinking my decisions. PS. I'm really paranoid that my school is painfully obvious so if you think you know it, please pm me and I will delay my last few rounds a bit more. |
Wow, sorry that it's all really scrunched up...I'll make sure to make better use of the enter key next time... :)
|
It's hard to read the lighter green font. Could you change it?
|
^^^Ditto. And I know it's not your first choice, but go Charms!
|
Sure no problem, I'll change it for the next post.
And Charms IS one of my first choices :) The top 4 are in no particular order, that's why they all have a number 1 next to them. |

ROUND 2 (Part 1): So we get our invites back (we’re allowed a maximum of 4 invites and my schedule reads: 1. Transfiguration 2. Defense Against the Dark Arts 3. Break 4. Care of Magical Creatures 5. Break Two of my bottom two and one of my top four (the one I was iffy about putting in my top 4). I immediately remembered Greek Chat and how most of the recruitment stories I’ve read turn out like this so I took a deep breath even though I was disappointed. |
Hang in there...keep an open mind...and breathe....

Transfiguration- was a good time because I felt comfortable and the conversations were normal but for some odd reason I really do not want to be part of this sorority. I’m very comfortable and natural with the girls but they’re not like the girls I’m usually close to or friends with, which is what is confusing me a little bit. Defense Against the Dark Arts- I walked in really wanting to fall in love with this group and give it a second shot. It was definitely better for this round, but there was no real connection when I talked with the girls and I knew that I wasn’t meant to be here. I was talking to three girls at any one given time, which was impressive, but I didn’t really click with any of them. When they showed their slideshow I felt out of place. I left thinking that I would not want to go to pref here. Care of Magical Creatures– I was grateful to be going back here because I know some of the girls and they are really very sweet.I was surprised to be double rushed here. I felt like most of the time they were more interested in the other pnm, who was interesting because she was from out of town and had lived somewhere far for most of her life. As the Care of Magical Creatures switched off talking to us, it got a bit better and their slideshow was really nice, I felt like I could be a part of their sorority, but I still didn’t feel strongly about it. For rankings, we had to put top 2 and bottom 2, so I put: 1. Care of Magical Creatures 1. Transfiguration 2. Defense Against the Dark Arts 3. |
Keep your head up! When I went through, I felt the same way about my chapter that you feel about Transfiguration. The sister that preffed me gave me the best advice. She told me that Alpha Chi (maybe Transfiguration in your case) may not be what you want at the time but they're are what you need.
I was stuck wanting popularity and that's what I thought I would get at the chapter I wanted to go but ignored the place I felt most at home. Now looking back, I am so very grateful to be the chapter that I need! P.S. Go Harry Potter!! |
Hi pnm2010! How did the rest of your recruitment go? I love your theme, and am curious to know!
:) |
Sorry for the delay...here is the rest of the story...Long story short...
I ended up attending prefs at Transfiguration and Care of Magical Creatures. Both were nice but I didn't feel super excited to be there like some of the girls. I didn't really 'fall in love' and although I could have joined and fallen in love later while getting to know everyone and everything about it, I still wasn't very keen on it. I have nothing bad to say about any of the sororities at my school; I have a lot of respect for them. When it came time to rank, I left my paper blank and decided to drop out of formal recruitment. HOWEVER............ There is one very crucial part to my story that I am leaving out. I left this out because once I say it I feel like my school is going to be painfully obvious, but now I am safe to tell you that during first round of recruitment, we went to an 8th sorority, that is colonizing on our campus this year. It was more of an info session than a recruitment, so we weren't supposed to rank them, and if we were interested in colonizing we had to drop out of formal recruitment to pursue it. So after attending the events for the colonization, I went to collect my envelope and found out that I got a bid!!!! We had our colonization ceremony that was so wonderful and special, and not many people get to experience a colonization ceremony, so we felt really privileged. I'm so excited to be a part of this colony and start new traditions and learn all about old ones. All the girls seem very sweet and I'm really looking forward to get to know them better. So.....any guesses as to which sorority this is? :) (maybe private message me if you want to guess or know) but I'll post it up (MAYBE) tomorrow. |
I'm going to guess that you are a Gamma Phi Beta at Grand Valley?
|
I'm gonna guess AOII.

Okay so even though I am extremely uncomfortable with having my school revealed, I figure this story would suck even more if I didn't reveal anything at the end.
Also, writing this story has made me realize why I'm not a writing/English major (I definitely need to improve my writing skills). and I'm sorry if this was really lame to read. I'm really happy with my sorority, I found that "super-excited" feeling that I was expecting to find during recruitment and I'm very comfortable around my colony sisters already. I know I made the right decision joining...... .......... ......... ......... ALPHA OMICRON PI!!!!!!!!!!!!! Girls from eastern washington and cal poly came up during the colonization events to talk to us and they were AMAZING (the cal poly girls missed their own prefs to come!!!!) So a huge thank you to them, we miss them already and were sad they couldn't all stay for the colonization ceremony. |
Congratulations to you and your new AOPi sisters! How exciting to be a part of a colony. I'm glad everything worked out well for you!!! :)
