A Midwestern Recruitment Story
Hey Guys!
I really enjoyed reading some of the recruitment stories on here (I'm rushing this semester at UW, and am super excited) and so I decided to write my own. oh and by UW, I mean Madison:cool: Orientation is on Sunday, and then first rounds are on Monday there are 11 panhel sororities here on campus, and I was going to name them by colors, but realized I might be tempted to make them the colors of their respective sororities (I did a bit of research this summer). SO greek goddesses because that might be fun... Hera Aphrodite Artemis Demeter Persephone Athena Nike Iris Nyx Hebe Hestia that took alot more thought, guess I didnt know 11 greek goddesses off the top of my head  |
Good luck and cant wait to read your story :)
|
Hurrah! I am so excited! I love UW stories! I am also going through recruitment withdrawal.
I need to fix your post though Quote:
Best of luck with recruitment! |
Love the codes! Go Hera!
|
Ahhh I love your theme! I'm rooting for Hebe (because she's such a pretty shade of purple!) Best of luck to you!
|
thanks guys!!
to AOEforme: ohh, oops sorry about that...guess I have alot to learn still oh, also I'm a sophomore here, can anyone familiar with the UW greek system let me know if Im at a disadvantage because of that? I will probably graduate the same year as this year's PCs anyhow because I am considering double majoring and traveling abroad. any insight will be greatly appreciated :D |
Carry on! After all of the SEC stories, I am just in the mood for a Midwestern Recruitment story. Best of luck to you! (and I love the codes... how appropriate)

Hopefully, you were involved on campus last year. Having friends and a good GPA will improve your recruitment too. If you have recommendations, they will help you a good deal. If not, oh well. You can let them know about the double major if it comes up, but you'll still be classified as a sophomore. (After all, a lot of people double major, especially because we don't get minors). Just keep an open mind and wow them with your personality. Also, if you are a sophomore and have already moved in to an off-campus apartment, tread carefully during Welcome Week. There are sorority women everywhere (seriously) and I've seen many a recruitment ruined during this week. For the 50,000 kids on campus, news travels horribly fast. Example: I had a girl come up to me, pulling up her tiny tube-top (with a thong hanging out to boot) in a bar (very obviously underage) and exclaim "OMG! You're president of that classy chapter! We start rush soon! I'm totally excited to be in a sorority! Will you get me in your house?" I never got a chance to reply because she hugged me and ran off to do shots. I recognized her when she came in to recruitment. She, obviously, had no clue she had ever personally met me. ----- But back to the main point: Don't worry too much about your sophomore status. You will experience harsher cuts but likely still end up in a house. In the words of a past president of our PHA, "Nearly every girl who truly opens her heart to finding her home will find one here at Wisconsin". Let me know if you have any other questions! |
Yay for a Big 10 recruitment story! Good luck to you!
Go Athena! (By the way, I had a great time reading up on the goddesses that I wasn't familiar with!) |
Best Wishes to you! UW is where my parents went to school. They were both in GLO's
|
Good luck! I was in a sorority chapter at Wisconsin---it was an absolutely wonderful experience!
|
YAY BIG TEN!!
AOEforme-yes Im living in an offcampus apartment, and I think during chapter last year sometime everyone in the greek community decided to live in this building haha I did think about that though, especially since so many people compare rushing to a job interview sorta, so thats part of the reason why I decided to abstain from most of the welcome week "festivities". I don't know why exactly but I feel that alot of the parties I go to have alot of greeks, so I definitely wouldnt want to mess up accidently. (note: I am not antisocial, I'm very outgoing and do enjoy to have a good time like most UW students, I just think its wise to save my fun for later) also because last year, I got sick after welcome week and missed 3 days of class, that would be disastrous if that happened this year (as rush is the first week of classes) would any of you consider UW to be almost a match guaranteeing school? as a sophomore I cant rush again next year (and still have a good chance at least) so I def want to get a bid this year and then stay with that house for my next 3-4 years here, essentially this is my last chance  last question, sorry if its an obvious one...what is a GLO?:o |
Greek Letter Organization. It encompasses the NPC and IFC, NPHC (the multicultural and traditionally black sororities) the service fraternities and the special interest fraternities (like music fraternities)
No campus guarantees a match, but most girls will get placed. |
ah no, I caught a cold!! :(:(:(
why? why? why? not too happy about this, all I can hope is the worst of my symptoms are not too bad come rush, and carry hand sanitizer all day during rush... |

No, UW is not a guaranteed match campus. However, most girls who keep an open mind get a home. Basically, it isn't a highly competitive campus. It IS somewhat competitive, so keep an open mind. |
University of Wisconsin is one of my favorite campuses, and I checked out their Greek Life/Recruitment information for fall 2010. They had one of the best videos on joining a sorority that I have seen:
http://www.uwgreek.com Enjoy the Beatles songs! This highlights all aspects of the sorority experience. :) |

The theme for Panhellenic Recruitment This Year is "Come Together", hence the Beatles Theme. :) |

My bro in law lives in Madison. We visited a couple of years ago and LOVED it there. Except for the fact that it is super cold in winter and the AGD Chapter is closed, lol.
Best of luck to you!! |
My Phi Kappa Psi brother lives in Madison, so we visit there & see the campus occasionally. He went there for grad school, fell in love with Madison and never came back to Chicago - he hates the traffic here with a passion. He spends alot of time in Key West during the winters so I never feel sorry for him while I am freezing in January thru March. :)

weird that we have the same theme and same thread name, but different areas.
|
redsox: really??? weird...Im going to check out your recruitment thread too then, all the threads are southern schools... plus I grew up in MA so I am super big Red Sox/Patriots/Celtics fan :D
sweeeet Caroline, bah bah bah!! good times never seeemmed sooo good, so goood soo gooda aaah LOVE IT! p.s. Im sorry that we have the same theme, I got the idea from the UW remix of Greek girl made by some friends of mine you can youtube it, one of the guys goes "Greek goddess from above, aphrodite etc etc etc" and the song is about the sororities on the UW campus (its a remix of the song Greek Girl by the same guys but about the IU campus) check out they are some cool songs, a little stereotypical but funny because guys I know wrote it so I personally find it hilarious :) |
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5jdPEBKDU5s
theres the video!! warning: alot of the references are VERY UW references so sorry if they dont make sense, but the guy goes Greek goddess from above, aphrodite beef (one of the guy's names) love, shooting arrows, call me cupid I mean eros...thats where I got the idea, plus some of the schools here in the midwest where my friends go to school have Greek Goddess pagent type contest, kinda like homecoming queen but for the most beautiful girl in the greek system, I think its Purdue? but I could be wrong. also I checked out your thread, you have both gods and goddesses so its not really the same, as for the name, its not like the name is very original... |
hey guys!
so orientation is sunday, EEK! Ive been preoccupied moving in my roommates and apartment shopping, but now back to focusing on rush. Tomorrow Im day tripping with another friend who's rushing to do nails, tan, and stuff, and shopping to buy the last item of my rush wardrobe my shoes for pref night. Its all coming together. I guess it hasn't hit me yet. I'm sure I'll get butterflies come Sunday (orientation) or Monday (first rounds) somewhat-funny-you had to be there story- so I didnt know it was sorority PR week, so I saw a ton of girls dressed up in their sorority gear and I thought I missed rush! haha legit freaked out :D k off to the gym, I'll update after I meet my Rho Gamma (Ro Chi's elsewhere I believe) or before first rounds :) |
haha what a funny story!! good luck with shopping and orientation, but just don't get orange! i'm of the opinion that a person's natural skin tone looks the most beautiful :]

I love Big 10 Recruitment stories!! Someday I'll get around to writing my own.
Cant wait to hear how it turns out :) :) |
luckily I'm from a background that tans easily :D so I just turn brown, yay!
k so nails done, tan done, lost weight (not on purpose for rush, I decided to start working out more and got hooked, my family is very athletic so I already grew up with health nuts, and just started going with it) result, a 5+lb lighter me! I have a small frame so those 5lbs sure made a difference haha Im going shopping to take one of my freshmen friends to finish getting her rush outfits, and then orientation today!! I originally wanted to do a live thread and post after each day but I feel so booked with classes starting and finishing getting apartment stuff so sorry if I take a while to update after today. RUSH starts tomorrow!! Good Luck to Everyone else who is rushing and reading this!!:D Confession: I'm scared I won't get a bid, or I'll get a bid, accept it, and realize it isnt the right house for me and drop . As a sophomore this is my last chance to go greek at a "somewhat competitive" school in terms of recruitment and I would definitely regret not being greek.....Maybe these are the pre-Rush butterflies/jitters? k bye for now GC!:) |
Don't worry about any of that. And the perfect home thing is a bit overblown. There are a lot of women in all of these houses and in 20 years there will be women you still talk to regularly and a couple that you STILL can't stand, even after all these years. It takes work, and there are no harps playing! But that doesn't mean it isn't awesome or worth the effort. You just need to be realistic about the process.

thanks Dubaisis
I met my rho gammas today!! I actually know which house one of them is in, she is a good friend of a friend of mine in another house, I don't think she remembers me though. I think I am going to be going to one of the others, because I actually would like a rho gamma who in my eyes is completely unaffiliated for my own sanity. My other rho gamma is a complete sweetheart, I really like her, and I met some new girl in my rush group already. Overall I think its off to a good start :) I'm excited and nervous for tomorrow, as well as exhausted from today (and orientation was only a few hours!) Its a strange feeling. Ok all my outfits are prepped, now to go over conversation a bit on greek chat, and then bed time :) Big Day Tomorrow. First Rounds. First Impressions. Wish me Luck! |
