In This Thread, We Talk About Things That Make Us Feel Old

- My baby sister started high school today. I vividly remember when she was born, and now she's all grown up

- In 2 weeks, I'll be closer to 30 than I am to 20

- I'm getting an awful lot of deference at frat events

- I'm starting to get invitations for my 10 year high school reunion

- I start a lot of sentences with "back in my day..."

*heads back to my patio to shoo the young whippersnappers off of my lawn*

KSUViolet06 08-23-2010 01:47 PM

My baby brother is going into 10th grade.

My baby cousin, who was 3 or 4 when I moved here, graduated from HS in May.

I went back for Homecoming, and my first composite was referenced as "that old composite over the couch." It's from 2005.

The fact that this year's college freshmen are class of 2014 and were born in like, 93.

Another baby cousin who was 5 when I moved here, now has TWO kids of her own. (Yikes).

I start to look at baby brother's female friend's outfits/FB pics/etc. and think they're inappropriate.

I see freshmen on campus and they look to me like they still belong in 7th grade.

The fact that a girl who graduated with me has a daughter going into first grade.

DubaiSis 08-23-2010 01:49 PM

* There are food labels I can't read no matter what if I have my contacts in.
* My youngest sister turns 40 this year
* Hearing about anything to do with my sorority chapter, and realizing they could easily be making fun of us just like we did the ladies in the 60's and 70's composites. So what if we wore massive shoulder pads and spackled on makeup?

Miriverite 08-23-2010 02:01 PM

My baby sister also started her first day of high school today.

I'm watching all the freshmen appear on campus and wonder if I used to look that wide-eyed, naive, and needlessly enthusiastic.

I'm not even that old. I just -feel- old.

DaemonSeid 08-23-2010 02:04 PM

I can remember what happened 30 years ago.

AlphaFrog 08-23-2010 02:11 PM

This is a timely thread for me...my daughter is starting kindergarten this week!!:eek:

KSUViolet06 08-23-2010 02:12 PM

AlphaFrog,

Pretty sure I remember when you didn't have kids! Wow.

srmom 08-23-2010 02:12 PM

I took my baby to college on Saturday. Where did all that time go?

My oldest son has been married now for over a year, and now I'm looking forward to a grandchild... YIKES!

I don't feel old, but I am old! Never thought I'd be old....

I still remember the door chants, so at least my memory is still good.

KSUViolet06 08-23-2010 02:16 PM

My oldest god-daughter starts first grade on Thursday.

That one really makes me feel old.

I'm glad one of us does.;):P

knight_shadow 08-23-2010 02:23 PM

- When I bring up some of my favorite artists/music videos/movies to young bucks, I'm told that "I'm into old school music/movies"

- I say "young bucks"

KSUViolet06 08-23-2010 02:25 PM

My favorite songs from middle school and high school are referred to as old school by Baby Brother.

You know, he asked me who Puff Daddy and Mase were the other day. Eep.

Also, the fact that my younger cousins know who justin Timberlake is, but they don't know that he started out in a boy band.

Puff Daddy? You mean P. Diddy back in the olden days?

Wait...I thought Mase was a preacher?

I still remember a BUNCH of them, and I never heard most of them again after that week, about this time 26 (!!!) years ago.

It's actually "I'm so happy that I am a" ;)

Ok, I know some people will roll their eyes at some of these, but they're what makes me feel old.

- I'm starting to talk about things that happened 10 years ago.

- My cousins starting frosh and senior year of HS!

Eh, I'll add more later.

agzg 08-23-2010 03:01 PM

Some of the kids I babysat are graduating college this year.

AnchorAlumna 08-23-2010 03:21 PM

Oh, please!
Ya'll complaining about feeling old at, what, age 27?
My DH turned 58 this summer.
He complains about feeling old.....and his 94-year-old father rolls his eyes like a teenager!!:p

TravelingBSP 08-23-2010 03:24 PM

My littlest brother had his first day of college today at my alma mater. I helped move him in last week and seeing how much campus has changed made me feel old. Then I remembered it had be 15 years since MY freshman year...some really fantastic friendships were forged in my college years!

KD4Me 08-23-2010 03:35 PM

My Alumnae Chapter had our first event on Saturday. I was asking one of the new girls if she had filled out a form to join, yet. She replied, "Yes, ma'am." I live in the South and am not bothered in the least when someone calls me "ma'am", but for some reason, it really hurt at an alumnae event!

KSUViolet06 08-23-2010 03:55 PM

I just found my Gameboy over the weekend (yes, the old huge grey one).

I showed it to my goddaughter (who has Nintendo DS now of course) and told her 'this is what Nintendo DS was like when I was a kid."

She looked at it as if it were soe sort of ancient artifact.

lol I have the original DS. She'd probably look at mine almost the same way.

tld221 08-23-2010 04:15 PM

I get called Ms. tld221 at this new job. I teeter between looking like a college student and like the mother of a college student, depending on what I wear and what I'm talking about.

My youngest brother-8 years apart-calls me a fossil. I've been upgraded from a rock (when i was 21 and he was... 13?)

Rock, fossil... I ask him what happens when i turn 26 in October, he says "you just gonna turn into dust. I feel sorry for you."

tld221 08-23-2010 04:19 PM

oh! and when i go to concerts of "old school" acts and know all the words to songs that came out "way back when."

Kinda like in Music and Lyrics, when Hugh Grant plays that has-been 80s pop singer... i'll totally be that girl 10 years from now with BSB/NSync, etc. Man, i am SO down for an 80s baby reunion-type show. SO DOWN.

On another note: i said something was "played out" on t.witter and has to ask, "hmm, i bet saying phrases like "played out" is played out."

DiamondAthena 08-23-2010 04:32 PM

I feel old when I realize I've had friends for 20 years and my husband and I have known each other for 12. We're young, but those things make me feel old. Oh and the fact that all my old relatives are on fb yet I've had it since it "became available to my college"

AZ-AlphaXi 08-23-2010 05:23 PM

Ha! you'll don't know what old is ... my son graduated from college in May and my husband and I will have been married 26 years in Sept. And I pledged 40 years ago this month!!

XAntoftheSkyX 08-23-2010 05:27 PM

Next month is the 8 year anniversary of claiming straightedge.

Senusret I 08-23-2010 05:47 PM

When I was in college, centennials for NPHC organizations seemed SO FAR AWAY.

Incoming freshmen (Class of 2014) will have missed two centennials and will experience FOUR!

33girl 08-23-2010 06:19 PM

I have multiple lipsticks from a manufacturer where the color doesn't show through the lid, and I have to put on my reading glasses to see the name of the color on the bottom. It doesn't help that the light in the room where I put on my makeup is jacked up and I need to replace it.

IrishLake 08-23-2010 07:22 PM

My baby sister starts college in less than 2 weeks.

I turned 30 3 months ago.

I found a grey hair in my eyebrow.

I remember seeing the "classics" in the movie theaters.

My senior year of high school, gas was less than a buck a gallon.

unicorn 08-23-2010 07:29 PM

That Beloit mindset survey thing: http://www.beloit.edu/mindset/2014.php

...particularly the item about most of the class of 2014 not knowing how to write in cursive. Jeez.

Yeah, what's up with that? I usually write in cursive, and I graduated in 2009. I have one friend (who's 2 years older than me!!) who confessed that he can't read cursive so I have to print for him. I don't have terrible handwriting either. Ugh!

ASUADPi 08-23-2010 08:35 PM

-my cousin started her sophomore year of high school. I remember when she was born.

-my brother's ten year high school reunion is this year.

-I was a fan of Transformers, GI Joe, and He-Man when they were cartoons and not big blockbuster movies (fyi-He Man is being redone into another movie).

-I write in cursive as well (I had high schoolers that didn't know how to write in cursive).

-That I'm ready for a nap after putting in an 8 hour day setting up my classroom (and that I took one)

-I remember a time when there was no such thing as DVD players, Internet, Cell Phones, HDMI, laptops, hybrid cars, etc...

-I remember when gas was less that $1.00 a gallon.

-That I graduated high school 13 years ago.

jennyj87 08-23-2010 08:55 PM

the fact that the majority of the girls in this upcoming pledge class were born in 1992+. I'm going to feel so old compared to them.

THAT and the new kid at work didn't know what captain planet was.

I remember being in an airport and only guys with suits had computers.

I turn 30 THIS decade.

Miriverite 08-23-2010 09:12 PM

I write in cursive as well.
I didn't get a cell phone until I started college.
I have a huge collection of VHS.
80's music is awesome.

NinjaPoodle 08-23-2010 09:24 PM

When I hear my FAVORITE songs..in an elevator, ugh, and then I start singing them.

Ugh, I've been there. I told a Saved By the Bell joke while giving a campus tour last year and only the parents laughed. ::facepalm::

And for the record, I always write in cursive.

Sister Havana 08-23-2010 09:36 PM

People who were seniors when I was a freshman are turning 40 this year.

My 20 year high school reunion is next year.

This year's college freshmen were mostly born when I was in college.

Hearing songs that were popular when I was in high school on the oldies station. (Not even the classic rock station!)

christiangirl 08-23-2010 09:40 PM

My nephew started 6th grade today....and so very excitedly reminded me that next year he'll be a teenager.

I have been asked by various teenagers, "Who is NSync/BoyzIIMen/SWV?" and of course, the all-humiliating "What's a Spice Girl?"

honeychile 08-23-2010 10:06 PM

Mr. SID came up with this one the other night: "You're getting old when you find that you're buying more Greatest Hits cds than the new ones." Yeah, my birthday is coming much too soon to laugh at that one!

You've learned to say "what or where is your tatoo," rather than "you have a tatoo?!"
