Susie's BRUTALLY TRUTHFUL thread at BTSU

A young friend of mine emailed me and asked me to post her recruitment story here – she was afraid of posting it under her own name in case her anonymity was breeched:
---------------------------
Hi! I’ll call myself Susie. I’ve been reading the stories on GC, and thought I’d post mine. I should start by saying it’s all 100% true, and absolutely not made up for a Mr. O’Connell’s remedial Creative Writing 101 class MWF 9-11.

So I’ll just dive right in with my BRUTALLY TRUTHFUL '10 recruitment story. I go to a school I’ll call BTSU (for Better Than a State University) There are a lot of sororities at BTSU, but I’ll focus on the top five (like I would even consider anything less that Top Tier?). I’ll name the sororities after items you see in everyday life in order to keep them simple (and anonymous!)

-Arrows
-Ladybugs
-Anchors
-Triangles
-Owls

I’m a legacy at ARROWS – my first sippy cup had arrows on it, and going to any school but BTSU and being anything but an arrow was out of the question. But in recent years my mom has mellowed, and she said I could join any sorority at BTSU as long as it was Top Tier.

My roommate Chardonnay and I decided to go through recruitment together. I’m petite, blond and gorgeous. She’s about 6’2”, has very large hands, and tells me that she has a deep, dark secret. She always wears a scarf around her neck, a fashion don’t that I’ve tried to break her of, but she won’t give it up. She also wears baggy pants, and when I suggested something more form-fitting, she said “I need somewhere to hide my candy”. This surprised me, as I rarely see her eating (secret = bulimia??????) But she’s as excited as I am to start!

My first round, I went to ARROWS. OMG – it looked like a scene from Gossip Girl – everyone was pretty and thin and blond. Since I’m pretty and thin and blond, I fit right in! One of the girls was from a prominent billionaire family in our state, and she noticed my Jimmy Choos and argued that Manolos were better. We spent all of our time debating, and finally agreed on Blahniks. I hope I didn’t hurt my chances by disagreeing, because I could SO see myself being a sister here. There is one brunette in the sorority (in fact, she’s kind of East Indian- looking), but she’s a senator’s daughter, so it’s okay.

Then on to OWLS. Ugh. So many brunettes. And they were wearing Steve Madden, which, though cute, can be purchased at DSW for a reasonable price, so yuck. Plus someone was being nice to me there for no reason, so I really hope I don’t get invited back.

The girls from ANCHORS were okay. They talked a lot about how much they enjoyed their philanthropy, and my stylist won’t let me near chlorine, so it might be a problem. And they all got along so well – no drama. What’s with that? Their president went to my high school, and knows how popular I was, so I’m sure I’ll be invited back, though (safety sorority?).

Then on to TRIANGLES. Wow, was to throw a wrench into the works. After ARROWS, I thought I knew where I belonged, but they might have some competition! These girls were cute and SO FUN. They were also impressed with my Dad’s helicopter, saying it would make their super-fun road trips SO much more do-able. Their house has a heli-pad on the roof, so even more points for TRIANGLES.

Last up for the night was LADYBUGS. Wow – those girls dress up! Lots of sequins and glitter, and it’s was a “casual” round. They were all as tall as Chardonnay, and wore REALLY heavy makeup. They had GREAT taste in shoes, but I’m not sure I could borrow from anyone, because I didn’t see any Weitzmans or Guccis that were smaller than I size 10. Chardonnay says she felt right at home, which is a shame, because I was hoping we could be sisters!

I was super-torn between the fun TRIANGLES and my legacy house - the lovely ARROWS - and also LADYBUGS so that I could be with Chardonnay (not sure she’s going to fit in anywhere else). I can't wait to see where I go for 2nd rounds! Well, I have to go to bed – more later!

AZTheta 08-19-2010 11:43 AM

What? no keys, kites, quills, diamonds? What kinda school is BTSU anyway? huh.

Don't even know if this is worth popcorn, let alone a soda. But carry on if you must.

AlphaFrog 08-19-2010 11:46 AM

It's moments like these I'm proud to be an ASA.

LionTamer 08-19-2010 11:48 AM

Oh, AZTheta, there are KITES at BTSU, but I knew I wouldn't get an invitation from there, because the president of KITES is pinned to a guy I used to make out with under the bleachers at high school basketball games, so I pretended to have heat stroke before we were supposed to visit KITES, so i probably won't get an invitation from there.

knight_shadow 08-19-2010 11:49 AM

LOL

I guess this is what I get for visiting *another* brutal, yet truthful, recruitment thread.

angels&angles 08-19-2010 11:52 AM

"Your" roommates name keeps changing.

Chardonnay is such a beautiful name. Is it french?

agzg 08-19-2010 11:56 AM

I'm glad there are no squirrels there. Brutal is right.

No silly, it's a wine!

Sorry, agzg, to tell you that you are wrong again, but I did a little research. The squirrels are under the bleachers - they are those adorable ground squirrels, the really cute ones, and the OP is *cough* a big girl and can't fit into the squirrel regulation attire for initiation.

Don't ask me how I know this. I just know.

Ah so the thong bikinis with big fluffy tails are out, huh?

A "friend" emailed you to post her story here? Why couldn't she do it just as anonymously?

I thought you was writing this for her friend? You answered in the first person here, just two minutes after the question was asked. Could you really have emailed your "Friend" the post, to which she replied immediately, then you copied and pasted it, in less than two minutes?

And another PNM with heat stroke?

Hmmm...

I'm guessing this is either a really big joke, orrrrr she actually is posting it for a friend who is ridic.
LionTamer has been around for quite awhile.

AZTheta 08-19-2010 12:07 PM

@agzg... it's okay, we'll vouch for you. And if worse comes to worst, I bet Panhellenic will make an exception and you can join another GLO through AI.

*ducks and hides*

and @ree-xi - logical explanation =the OP is actually logged on to LionTamer's account & you know how forgetful the Young People are these days. They are Easily Confused.

Please carry on, LionTamer/Susie or whoever you want to be.

I say joke based on being here for 7 years.

I mean, there's a "secret" (aka "thing") about the giant girl with large hands and baggy pants, a rich senator's daughter who is "East Indian" or something (Rebecca Logan from "Greek"??) a chapter full of women wearing sequins...

Then again, you could be right, AzTheta, she could be logged in right now. Silly me.

nittanygirl 08-19-2010 12:16 PM

how did i miss the sequins part!??! hahaha

LionTamer 08-19-2010 12:26 PM

Well, before I object to people doubting my veracity and flounce off, I'll post a little more COMPLETELY TRUE information.

We got our invitations back for 2nd round, and as expected, Chardonnay got invited back only to LADYBUGS. I would have been embarrassed, but she said it was "fabulous".

I was stunned to find out that I had been cut from both ARROWS and TRIANGLES (and KITES, but I expected that, with the heat stroke and all)! And I still have my ARROWS sippy-cup!

So it was down to ANCHORS, LADYBUGS, and OWLS. Tonight was a combination philanthropy and skit night (BTSU is odd like that).

OWLS did a really cute skit (even though the sight of all those affordable Steve Maddens were driving me crazy). Surprisingly, some of the OWLS seemed put off that I had worn Mommy's Channel diamond-crusted owl necklace --- you would think they would take it as a compliment.

I told the ANCHORS that they might be able to use Daddy's helicopter for some of the diving competitions for their philanthropy, and they just didn't seem to appreciate it!

But the highlight of the night was LADYBUGS, who did Karaoke. The girls outdid themselves with sequins, sparkly tights, and great singing - Streisand, Minelli, and "And I Tell You I'm Not Going".

(Extra points to Ree-Xi for getting the Rebecca Logan reference!! It's so reassuring these days to see someone with both excellent reading comprehension AND pop culture savvy!)

DubaiSis 08-19-2010 12:27 PM

Yes, I'm predicting pink sequined hose any moment.

agzg 08-19-2010 12:29 PM

I object to your leaving out thong bikinis with big fluffy tails! You're biased!

I'm calling my IHQ!

I've recieved numerous PMs in support of my position! I would post them but I want to protect anonymity!

Rebecca Logan was easy. I was more amused by your dad's helicopter and more impressed by the allusions to The Lady Chablis.

LionTamer 08-19-2010 12:53 PM

Well, since there are people here who don’t believe me, I’ll just cut to the chase and tell you that Chardonnay and I both ended up with only one preference party. Your mean and cynical doubts have just deprived yourselves from hearing about the beautiful, moving, ceremony that is LADYBUG preference.
The next morning, we went to Post Office, and got our envelopes.
The LADYBUGS came running towards us and literally swept us off our feet (no, really, they picked us up and carried us back to the house).
And that night, I finally found out Chardonnay’s secret, which is……

She’s related to General Patton on her dad’s side.
I’ve decided that discretion is the better part of valor, and I won’t reveal what national sorority LADYBUGS is, but I’ve been told that our initiation involves a giant animatronic ladybug and spoons. Lots and lots of spoons. So that may be a hint to any of my initiated sisters on this board…..

(Ooo, and an A+ to Mystic Cat for picking up the "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" sort-of reference)

AOII Angel 08-19-2010 12:57 PM

Yay, ladybugs! You'll never get better fashion advice than with the fabulous sisters of that house!!

I fit in the fluffy tail costume, unlike those dirty and disgusting CORs. I won't lose my membership.

LionTamer 08-19-2010 01:05 PM

Oh, AOP Angel - you have no idea! They are the most amazingly dressed girls on campus (except for those scarves)

They've sort of made me there mascot - my pledge nickname (sorry MEMBER EDUCATION nickname) is "breeder". I think because I told them that I had a rabbit hutch as a child!

AlphaFrog 08-19-2010 01:10 PM

LT - we certainly got your spoon's worth on this one.

Razzle Dazzle Dalpha, Alpha Sigma Alpha!!! (I've been waiting for an appropriate place to throw this in).;):)

AZTheta 08-19-2010 01:16 PM

Susie, congratulations on Ladybugs! I love me some ladybugs. They fly!

Could you possibly come back from time to time and share about your NME experiences, and give us more fashion tips? I mean, ellebud is kinda busy these days and you might be able to take up some of the slack.

For the record, I Believed You.

I don't think you can comment, I mean look at what Pennsylvania school you attended. You only fit in that costume because you have on four pairs of Spanx and it isn't satin.

You know our fluffy tail costumes are made of visqueen because of the biologicals involved in our bonding, or should I say biohazarding.

I know I shouldn't be posting from our Ritual Manual, but it was just too appropriate!

please don't make this thread disappear; you guys keep spilling secrets, I'm a little worried. Spanx???
