The University of Texas at Austin Recruitment 2010

Last year I had the good fortune to accidently encounter some of the recruitment action at the University of Texas, and I posted a few quick phone photos here. The positive response inspired me to try to get over to campus this year and get a few more for my friends at Greekchat. Tonight I bribed Mr. Homeward*bound with tacos at our favorite place in west campus. In return he had to drive me around so I could snap some sorority house photos. Recruitment begins tomorrow. The tents are up. This is the calm before the storm.

Those are only the chapters on west campus. I apologize for the poor quality --- but that was the best I could get for night photos, with a phone in a moving car. It had nothing to do with my wonderful photography skills! :p

I'm not sure if or when I will be able to get over there this week --- but it's possible I may have more to post in the coming days.

Thanks, Homeward Bound! Your description of the "calm before the storm" is very apt!

arrowlady 08-19-2010 08:51 AM

Great to see the houses in the calm! Thanks for the pics. I wrote a rec for a great pnm. Keeping my fingers crossed for her she is an amazing girl!

tinydancer 08-19-2010 04:10 PM

It is fun to see the houses quiet and waiting! It makes me homesick for Austin in the fall.

Day One: Open Houses

Just a few photos I took while cutting through campus this afternoon. The PNMs' shirts are purple and the Rho Chis (Pi Chis?) and members appear to be wearing hot pink shirts. Everyone is wearing the requisite khaki shorts and trainers. :D

PNMs running to their next party. I don't know how much time they have between parties but there is no sorority row at UT and the houses are spread out:

You can't see them too well, but the PNMs are sitting on the porch at the front of the house.

UGH!! I can not even imagine running in that heat!

FSUZeta 08-19-2010 08:07 PM

great photos!! thanks for going to all the trouble!!

Low C Sharp 08-19-2010 08:11 PM

Seems like torture to make them run, but I'm glad to see PNMs in pony tails. That's the only humane choice at this time of year!

I love the action shots! Keep it up! I wish the kappa house was in this section!

homeward*bound 08-19-2010 11:17 PM

Thanks, everyone. I'm glad you're enjoying it, and it's no trouble for me at all. I live very close to campus and have a lot of appointments in the area, so cutting through campus only takes a couple of extra minutes. I'm having so much fun seeing the action. The only thing that would make it better would be if we had a Gamma Phi chapter --- but of course then I'd be there helping out and not able to drive around taking photos.

Gee_ess, I'm going to try to make it over to the Kappa and Alpha Phi houses at some point. They're in a different part of campus and I haven't had a chance to easily get over there yet.

DubaiSis 08-20-2010 02:46 AM

and please the Alpha Xi house in daylight!

Love the pics, thank you so much for posting them!

One of the women in my AXiD alumnae group is a grad of UT at Austin. She is the sweetest person!

nittanygirl 08-20-2010 02:27 PM

Love the pictures. The Zeta house kind of looks like the ZBZ house on Greek!

I was about to say that too =)
Any pics of the AXO house?

Skit and Philanthropy Days
I'm back! My timing was off on skit and philanthropy days and I didn't have much spare time so I didn't get any action photos --- but I did get a few photos of chapter houses that were requested here:

Alpha Chi Omega
If you look closely you can see the legendary plastic bags lined up along the steps and the Rho Chi sitting up by the front door.

I think this was the house that was once one of those unfortunate 1960s monstrosities and recently remodeled into something more traditional looking. It's very lovely!

Preference Night
It was still over 100 degrees for Preference Night. The PNMs deserve a medal just for looking so lovely and running on heels between their parties! Black was the primary color of the evening, with a few animal prints and other colors thrown in here and there.

Bid Day!
It was 104 degrees this afternoon and sundresses were the choice of most. Many of the groups had already left for their activities or had gone into their houses, and traffic was crazy since classes begin tomorrow. Here are a few quick photos I was able to get before I gave up.

I feel ridiculous asking this, but does the ZTA house look very similar to the ZBZ (Greek) house?

gee_ess 08-24-2010 09:58 PM

Thanks for getting a few shots of the KKG house! I have never seen a picture of it.

And, for all Texas pnms who may be looking at this some day: that suggestion in the recruitment booklet about wearing black on pref is there for a reason. They can't officially require pnms to wear black but those that do not look out of place out of the loop.

arrowlady 08-24-2010 10:27 PM

How fun to see the pics! My rec girl went A Xi D, she is so happy and I am thrilled for her.

TXAPhiGirl 08-24-2010 11:17 PM

LOL. It does! It was WICKED hot during Rush this year, and these girls were true troopers. They really took the heat in stride. I hope all PNM's found a new home. Good luck to any of your Rec's out there.

That's great. I thinks that the first AXiD I've heard about on here.

Zeta House

Yes, the ZTA house looks very similar to the ZBZ House on Greek! I lived their last year, and we were told one of the producers for the show is a UT Alum, and modeled the show's house after Zeta's!

Cool huh??

:o)

I'm guessing that the PNMs get a plastic bag to put their belongings in, for in between houses? I've seen one school where the bags are clear plastic so that you can see what's inside (so that you aren't sneaking anything out of the houses. When I worked retail, we could only carry our stuff to and from the store in clear bags given to us for this purpose, and were patted down every time we left the store.)

When I worked in retail even trash bags had to be clear plastic. We had to inspect the trash every night to make sure things were not sneaked out.

Cousin's daughter pledged Kappa at UT.

Just thought I'd update that the new sophomore quota that was implemented for Texas recruitment this year was very successful. SEVERAL sororities took this to their advantage, and even "top" houses took in more than 2 sophomores, a few even took in a couple juniors. Sophomores do not have to be THAT worried about rushing anymore... granted it is still difficult (much more difficult than coming in as a freshman), every sorority took in more than one sophomore this year, even every "big 6" house.

This is overly simplistic. The new quota mostly worked for transfer students only, not re-rushers or first time rushing non-freshmen. The "top" houses did not use the quota in the same enthusiastic way the others did. Non-freshmen should not go into Texas recruitment believing that the new quota will greatly improve their chances, particularly at the "top" and "middle" tier houses. The truth is there many more who didn't receive bids or who dropped out than those who did receive bids.
