A girl scout cookie recruitment!

Hi everyone!
I've been a lurker on greekchat for awhile. I've read so many threads and gotten a lot of great advice. The first day of my recruitment starts tomorrow! I'm not going to reveal my school until the end, so if you think you know, please keep it to yourself. I will be visiting 11 sororities in the next few days, and I have decided to name them after girl scout cookies! I could only remember a few names of the cookies so I had to do a google search, and I haven't even heard of some of them! I hope I didn't forget any good ones..

Anyway, I am really nervous but also really excited. I have at least one rec for every house. I'm going into recruitment with an open mind and I'm going to stay as far away from "tent talk" as I can. Unfortunately I do know some of the reputations of some of the houses, but I can honestly say I'm not going to let it affect what I think of them. I would be happy to join any house that wants me as a sister. :)

Anyway, here they are, in no particular order:

Do Si Dos
Dulce de Leche
Lemon Chalet Cremes
Samoas
Tagalongs
Thank you Berry Munch
Thin Mints
Trefoils
Lemonades
Thanks-a-Lot
Daisy go Rounds

I will update again probably tomorrow night after the first day of set one!

Oops, I meant to post this in the recruitment stories forum. I'm sorry! Could someone move it, maybe?

atrianglepi 08-16-2010 12:48 PM

Tagalongs are the best, but nothing beats a frozen Thin Mint on a hot day! Good luck in recruitment.

ASUADPi 08-16-2010 02:06 PM

Thin Mints all the way!!!!!

FSUZeta 08-16-2010 02:36 PM

I've never heard of some of these cookies- are the names a regional thing??
Anyways, good luck to a fellow scout (I'm assuming) and PNM!

Yes! Just learned this this year! Roomie is from Philly area and I am from Pittsburgh area and we call cookies by different names

Somoas = Caramel DeLites
Do-Si-Do = Peanut Butter Sandwiches
Trefoils = Shortbread
Tag-A-Longs = Peanut Butter Patties
and so on...

Thin Mints ALL THE WAY! (Good Luck! :))

violetpretty 08-16-2010 05:32 PM

I do love me some Thin Mints, but also love Lemon Chalet Creams. Does anyone remember the Juliettes from the mid 90s? They were one of the limited edition cookies in a turquoise box. They were a moist fudgy chocolate cookie layered with chopped pecans and caramel and covered in chocolate. WHY WHY WHY were they discontinued?

Agreed! :)

33girl 08-16-2010 06:46 PM

Trefoils aren't as good as they used to be. I think they took the trans fat out. :(

This comment, however, has absolutely no bearing on the sorority coded as Trefoils.

barbino 08-16-2010 07:04 PM

Girl Scout cookies are like NPC sororities --- they are all good. :)

*LOL*

@Barbino: I would agree except for the girls who have peanut butter allergies! :)

It's a tie between Thin Mints and Do-Si-Dos for me! Good luck! :)

girlscout21 08-17-2010 10:15 PM

Oh my gosh, I am so exhausted. I just took a nice ice cold shower and got all comfortable so now I am ready to start writing my story! I just want to say how surreal this is. I have read so many recruitment stories it is just so weird that now I'm writing my own!

So today I went to 6 chapters:

Lemonades- Right before I went into this house I had crazy butterflies in my stomach. I was SO nervous! I was asking everyone else in my recruitment group if they were nervous too, but apparently I was the only one! Well, that didn't last long. I went in and was greeted by a bunch of singing girls which I was prepared for thanks to greekchat! One girl took me and we went and sat down. I wish I could remember what we talked about but I don't. But that probably means it was just the usual stuff like hometown, residence hall, family, major, etc. But all in all, I really liked these girls.

Do Si Dos- This was my second house, and instead of being nervous like I was at the first one, I was SO FREAKING EXCITED! Haha. I was totally pumped up from the first event. I smiled a lot and asked a lot of questions and was probably a lot more confident that I was at the Lemonades house. These girls were also really nice, but I can't remember any specifics unfortunately! We get these recruitment books to take notes in but we aren't allowed to take them with us when the day is over. I think its to prevent girls from sharing notes with each other. Which makes sense, because basically all I heard today from other PNMs was gossip about each of the chapters.

Thin Mints- I loved these girls! I had some really great conversations with some of them. One of them lived in my hometown for a little while so it was nice we had that in common. Okay so since my story is getting a little boring because I'm basically saying the same thing about each chapter, I'll tell you my little embarassing moment from this chapter. As I was walking in, I guess I walked over an air vent on the floor and my skirt flew up. I'm pretty sure everyone saw but they pretended they didn't. Despite that little incident, I had a great time here!

Trefoils- Okay, let me just start off by saying that my entire group was not looking forward to going to this chapter. They were making fun of the girls before we even went in! Apparently they have a bad reputation. But screw that! I LOVED THEM!!! They rest of the girls were just judging by their looks and probably had their minds made up about them before they even went in, so of course they were gonna leave the house and not like them. But I really liked them. I had some genuine conversations and they all seem really down to earth. I could see myself being happy here.

Samoas- I really liked these girls but I felt a little intimidated for some reason when I went in. The girl I talked to was so pretty. I wasn't gonna talk about how pretty the girls were in my story because I didn't think it was important, but I had to just mention this one girl. Aside from that, I really liked their house and I am especially interested in their philanthropy. I have done a lot of volunteer work on my own for something very similar to what they do. So we basically talked about that the whole time. It was fun! Philanthropy is something I definitely want to be involved with if I join a sorority so it was nice to hear about the kinds of things they did.

Thanks-a-lot - Last house of the day! whew! I have to say, I had pretty much the same experience in every single house I went to. They were all amazing, this one included. They seemed really into their academics and things like that which is so important to me. We also talked about pets which was so fun but it made me miss my dog. I really liked these girls a lot and I feel like our conversations went really smoothly. I had fun!

Wow okay so I feel like I forgot a lot of stuff. Haha. Basically to sum up, all the houses were gorgeous, all the girls were stunning, and I would be happy to be invited back to any one of these houses. After going through this experience myself, I find it incredible how some of these girls who write recruitment stories can form opinions after just a half hour and after talking to only 4 or 5 girls! Right now I think all of the houses are amazing. If the ones tomorrow are half as fun as today, I will be just amazed at how awesome greek life is at my school.

I will update again tomorrow night! Hope you enjoyed reading! And if you have any questions, ask. Because I feel like I forgot to include a lot of stuff.

CherrySonata 08-17-2010 11:53 PM

This was really fun to read. How tired are you? I'm really excited for you :)

DubaiSis 08-18-2010 01:16 AM

I'm so glad to hear you staying positive and realizing the tent talk is worthless. And don't worry about the Marilyn Monroe incident. Everyone needs to be memorable during rush. I figure if that's the worst you've got this week, you are in for a very good time.

AXOmom 08-18-2010 02:38 AM

I love your story so far and you have a GREAT attitude. Keep that and no matter what happens with your recruitment - you'll do just fine in college and in life.

The dress over the air vent story made me think of Anna Faris in "The House Bunny" LOL. A take off on Marilyn Monroe. It might be one of those things all of your sorority sisters laugh about with you someday.

Don't want to pick a favorite, BUT I've found you can never have too many thin mints. Gotta go with those.

Good luck and enjoy every minute!

DubaiSis 08-18-2010 06:04 AM

I'm going to root for Trefoils, one because I love an underdog and two because I love the shortbread cookies. However, I do maintain the right to gripe about the change in recipe. They used to be way better.

FSUZeta 08-18-2010 08:06 AM

i am so glad that you had a great time!! good luck tomorrow!

LoggerTheta 08-18-2010 01:38 PM

*drool* Juliettes... They were my favorite Girl Scout Cookie when I joined way back in 1990...

Anyway, I like your story so far. You have a great attitude about recruitment. Good luck in the coming days. And Goooo Samoas!

*sings* Girl Scouts together. Happy are we. Winding the old trails; rocky and free. Learning our motto. Living our creed. Girl Scouts together in every good deed...

MUSK81 08-18-2010 07:06 PM

I remember that song ... I also remember selling GS cookies when they were $1 a box ;)!

AXOrushadvisor 08-18-2010 07:30 PM

You were like Marilyn Monroe at Thin Mints! Love it. BTW, I'm going to say that you give me hope in the new generation with your comments on Trefoils. I personally LOVE Trefoils and they have never done any thing disrespectful and have always gotten along with the other cookies in my cabinet. Have fun and good luck to you!

FleurGirl 08-18-2010 07:49 PM

Look at you with your open mind and good attitude! You're a model PNM my dear, I have the utmost faith that it'll work out. Good luck!!! :)

PS: Go trefoils!

girlscout21 08-19-2010 08:29 AM

Hi everyone! So sorry I didn't update last night. I laid down to take a quick nap and didn't wake up until about 20 minutes ago. haha. So I guess it was a pretty exhausting day. I have 2 hours until I need to meet my RC and group so I figured I'd write my story now!

I seriously wish they'd let us take our little books with us. I hardly remember anything that happened now. It goes by so quickly!!

Tagalongs- This house was fantastic! I had the usual conversations with most of the girls I talked to but I feel like I got a really good vibe from them. Plus their song was soo adorable. I had it stuck in my head for the rest of the day.

Thank you very Munch- These girls were great as well. Honestly, the energy I got from every single house was amazing. I kept thinking how hard it was going to be to rank them later. I liked this house a lot. And I feel like I had a memorable conversation with one of the girls. We talked about ear piercings which was cool.

Lemon Chalet Cremes- This house was absolutely gorgeous! And I'm talking about the physical house itself, although the girls were stunning as well. Its kinda hard to go into a house that you would really want to live in and be completely unbiased about the girls. But I think I did a good job. I really liked them a lot! Except it was so loud at one point, one of the girls asked me a question and I couldn't hear her so I just nodded and said, "Oh, ok." Then I realized she had asked a question and I was so embarassed. haha.

Dulce de Leche- Okay, I REALLY wanted to like this house because I know a ton of people that were in it at other schools and I had a couple relatives write me recs for this house. But I got a weird vibe from it. The girls were all really nice but I don't think they really knew what they were doing. Although I may have just got some inexperienced girls. The same girl asked me the same question several times, and another asked me if I wanted her to know anything else about myself. I was kinda put on the spot like that and didn't know what to say. But the girls were nice, and thats really all that matters.

Daisy go Rounds- This is the house that most girls are OBSESSED with. Its crazy. I've heard great things about them. I talked to 3 girls in this house and they were all SO nice. They were also really involved on campus with other non-sorority things which I thought was cool. I can see why girls are obsessed with this chapter, they were gorgeous and sweet. I liked them a lot.

So yeah, that was my day! Today when we meet with our groups we will get our schedule with no more than 8 chapters on it. My RC said it is really rare to get all 8. To be honest, I'd be happy getting just 1 or 2. haha. I mean, it only takes 1 right?

Oh yeah, and this is how I ranked them:

The 8 I would most want to go back to:
Tagalongs
Samoas
Trefoils
Thin Mints
Lemonades
Daisy go Rounds
Do Si Dos
Lemon Chalet Cremes

And the 3 I would second most want to go back to:
Thanks-a-Lot
Thank you Berry Munch
Dulce de Leche

Honestly, I would be happy to go back to any of these houses. Ranking them was SO hard! I kinda just did it by a feeling I got from each of the houses. Hopefully it will be easier after they get narrowed down a bit.

Thanks for reading! I'll try and update later today if I don't fall asleep again!

arrowlady 08-19-2010 08:46 AM

Hope you have a great day today!!! Rushing is exhausting so take care of yourself!

nittanygirl 08-19-2010 09:31 AM

Changing my pick to Trefoils because I love that you were willing to look past things some girls won't.

Good luck today!!!

girlscout21 08-20-2010 02:38 AM

All right! So it is officially the end of set 2! hoorah!
I was able to go back to a maximum of 8 chapters today, and I got asked back to 6!! yay! haha, I honestly thought that I was only going to get one or two. I was so happy! I loved all the chapters on my schedule.
Here they are:

Thin Mints- Their song/presentation was SO cute! I loved it so much. We got to look around and learn about the kinds of things they do as sisters. This was the same house where my skirt blew up the other day, and it almost happened again! I walked over another fan in the ground but this time, I caught my skirt just in time! Whew! I really enjoyed this house a lot and the conversation flowed really nicely.

Samoas- I LOVE their philanthropy. I think I said it before, but I really do. Its something that means a lot to me personally and I've done a lot of similar volunteer work. I love the girls in this house. All of the girls I have talked to are SO nice.

Trefoils- I was really excited to go back here, but some of the other girls in line were totally pissed off they had to come back here. Some girls didn't even show which got them cut from recruitment all together. What morons. They don't even deserve to be in a sorority. I really had fun here, we did a cute little craft and then walked around and I learned about the kinds of things that they do. It was fun, but not overwhelmingly fun like some of the other houses.

Daisy Go Rounds- I was shocked when I saw this chapter on my schedule. I totally did not think I was their type at all. I mean, the girls are fantastic and I could totally see myself being friends with them, but I don't think I would fit in at all. I figured I only got asked back because I had 2 recs for this house. I won't be terribly upset if I don't go back to them tomorrow. It just wasn't the best fit for me.

Tagalongs- I had such a good time here during set 1, so I was really excited to go back. Unfortunately, I had kind of a weird experience. The first girl I talked to was kind of dull. I could tell she was really tired though because she kept trying to lean on things. All she did was explain things, and when I would try and go off on a tangent and have a conversation she would just nod and continue with what she was saying. I mean, I know she was tired but so is everyone else in all the other houses! And they all manage to be super energetic. I don't know if I want to be in a house that does things half ass like she did. Well, the next girl I talked with was awesome!! We had a lot in common and ended up talking the entire time instead of doing the craft. After I left this house I felt weird. I honestly don't know what to think of them now.

Lemonades- Oh. My. Gosh. I am totally in love. These girls are fantastic. I could totally see myself fitting in with them. The first girl I talked to was so funny. We were cracking jokes and laughing the whole time, and we had a ton in common. The next two girls I talked to were the same girls I talked to on the first day. And they both remembered me which was good. Especially because the last time they saw me was the very first event 2 days ago. I feel like I could really fit in with these girls. I'll be pretty bummed if they aren't on my schedule tomorrow.

So at the end of the day, we had to choose 5 we liked the most.
I chose:
Samoas
Tagalongs
Thin Mints
Trefoils
Lemonades

And I put Daisy go Rounds as the one I wouldn't want to go back to. However, I wouldn't mind going back there. It was just that I felt like it wasn't for me.

I will update again tomorrow night!! Stay tuned for skit day!

KSUViolet06 08-20-2010 02:48 AM

Something to think about: A tired rusher who maybe doesn't make the best conversation does not mean an entire chapter may do things "half ass." You have to consider (if you visited the houses in the order you listed them) that it was probably late in the day.

One person is not a reflection of a whole house. :)

Whatever your outcome, whether you get a bid or not, you have already WON at Greek life, and life in general.

I am really happy to hear how you are progressing with recruitment. Your attitude and enthusiasm are wonderful!

It is so great to hear your story! I am shocked that girls did not go to a house on their list.
I hope you continue to have fun!

Yeah, I realize that now. I just reread what I posted yesterday and I kinda feel bad about it. That was kind of a mean thing for me to say. I went to that house again today and had an amazing time. But I'll post the rest of that later. I'm on a break now and have one house left to go.
