South Carolina Fall 2010!!
South Carolina time!
My God daughter is in her first recruitment event tonight, an orientation meeting where they meet their Pi Chis and learn the ins and outs of recruitment, Columbia style. So... it is time to start a thread for all of the lovely women and nervous rec writers, moms, and God moms to post stories and results for SC. I hope others who are either participating or waiting out recruitment at Columbia will join in the conversation. I understand that last count is about 1150, but I have also heard a much higher number of PNMs--so much higher I don't trust it completely. The girls are split into two orientation meetings tonight, one at 7:30 and one at 8:30. First round is Tuesday, when they visit all ten chapters. My God Daughter is a midwestern gal. Surprisingly, SC is a popular destination for boys and girls from this region, and she is one of many people from her school and city to begin school in Columbia, Charlotte, and other points south. There are ten fabulous sororities on campus. Alpha Delta Pi Alpha Chi Omega Chi Omega Delta Delta Delta Delta Zeta Gamma Phi Beta Kappa Delta Kappa Kappa Gamma Phi Mu Zeta Tau Alpha She is a legacy to one of these groups and my sorority is on campus as well. We worked hard to secure recs, and have one or more to each group on campus except for one. We have talked to her about keeping an open mind, not listening to tent talk, playing it through to the end, etc. I hope those conversations took root! I am very excited and nervous.. I don't have a daughter, so this is my "legacy" until I have some granddaughters. She is a super student with many academic awards, good activities, an athlete who is cute, slim and tan... in other words, in SEC world, she is a typical rushee. Those of you from SW Ohio will get these codes... they are icons of life along the Ohio River. In no particular order: Proctor & Gamble Oktoberfest Graeter's Skyline Aglamesis Gold Star Delta Queen Serpentine Wall Rookwood Pottery Big Red Machine Good luck to all of the PNMs and chapters at South Carolina. |
My in-laws live in Columbia now, so I'll be following any and all SC stories. Also LOVE the code names and am cheering mightily for the Big Red Machine and Graeter's!
|
LMAO!!!! A Queen City themed recruitment!!! I LOVE this! I'm pulling for Skyline and Oktoberfest!
|
I've got a couple going through at South Carolina, but I'll be waiting to post until after they're done.
Best of luck to your God daughter, Katmandu! |

LOL< I was really wanting to work in a Goetta, Flying Pig and Big Butter Jesus, but wasn't sure those were the right images for beautiful southern sorority women!! Gotta love SW Ohio! |
BBJ is soooooo not proper for a southern rush!!!!
|
On a beautiful summer night... Serpentine Wall!

I have a friend going through at South Carolina too! She is so excited!
As far as your codes, I'm pulling for Skyline and Graeter's. Is BBJ the more common term? My friends mostly call it Touchdown Jesus. |
Violetpretty, TD Jesus is very common, but after the song came out, I could only think of the oleo.
OK, the PNMs met their Pi Chi groups last night and split into two large convocations, one at 7:30 one at 8:30 for recruitment orientation. She said it was long, but interesting. All of the chapters did what she called presentations or skits.. not really sure what these were, but she liked Grater's presentation/skit best. She said most of the sorority women had on Tshirts and shorts and pearls, a strange combo for her, LOL... She loves her II Xs. They told the group that it is important to wear the right kind of dress for pref, i.e, that it be modest, not too low cut and not too short. They offered to look their dresses over to give an opinion as they said it could affect the outcome if inapropriate. She had a mandatory Honors College meeting when her pi chi group was going to have a "dress showing", but she will get an opinion on two possibles later in the week. Tomorrow it's ten houses for the first round. She is a legacy to Delta Queen, and has cousins who are Aglamesis, but not at this chapter. Personal friends or family provided recs for Oktoberfest, Graeters, Delta Queen, Skyline and Aglamesis. Recs for Procter & Gamble, Gold Star, Serpentine Wall and the Big Red Machine were provided by the wonderful sorority network, friends of friends, contacts through alumni groups and just asking around. She does not have a rec for Rookwood Pottery. (drats) Good luck to all our SC girls. |
OP, good luck to your god daughter! I am originally from Columbia, and have a lot of friends who went Greek at USC. USC is a great school and Columbia is good place to be!

South Carolina recruitment
So excited to be reading a USC recruitment thread! The most adorable pictures I saw on Greekchat last year were from this school with all the girls in white and their balloons on bid day!
dgdramadog, can't wait for your story too. I love reading your threads on GC! |

I'll take skyline, hold the onions please.
And good luck to your goddaughter at SC. Recruitment is a whirlwind there! Go Cocks! |
Procter and Gamble - My mom worked at the Miami Valley facility as a stenographer back when they actually had them.
A girl from my S's high school is going there, but I don't know if she's going through recruitment or not. |
Good luck to your God-daughter! :) Can't wait to hear her story.
My daughter's currently at USC and loves everything about it! I will say no more ;). (Don't want to say anything wrong or have her annoyed with me!) |
Long day--loud day, crowded day.
There were 18 party slots, so some down time along the way. She felt a great connection with: (in no particular order) Procter & Gamble Graeter's Aglamesis Delta Queen Serpentine Wall Rookwood She really liked (The Chili brands are running neck and neck) Gold Star Skyline She didn't feel as much of a connection but would welcome an invitation from: Big Red Machine Oktoberfest At many of her favorites, the active paired with her had a significant connection of some sort, which of course makes all the difference! Tomorrow starts bright and early. I know there are several other PNMs and moms from SC....good luck to all of you! |
Yay! I've been looking forward to this story, Katmandu.
Good luck to all the USC PNMs! |
Thanks Leslie Anne! She really liked a lot of groups, including ours!
|
Wow, it seems like she is really connecting with most of the houses! That is awesome!!
|
Wishing them all luck today! They can attend a maximum of 7 parties with tomorrow an off day.
Posting will be on a "game delay" during invitational rounds. dgdramadawg, yes, she really had a positive reaction to all ten. Conversations were a little more at ease in some than others, but it appears to be a really great greek system with wonderful chapters. |
Keeping our fingers crossed that all is going well!
|
She is at prefs right now, even as I post this, so hope to have a wonderful ending to share Sunday. I have been biting my tongue, because there are many SC moms, pnms and actives who post and lurk and I didn't want to say anything, even indavertently, that would have a negative effect on her experience.
There's been rain, thunder, PNMs stuck in houses during storms, nerves, lots of Lily Pulitzer sightings, long days, missed and delayed meals--and homework to do. I know a lot of people are looking forward to tomorrow when bids are finally handed out. |
Fingers crossed for her!
|
My daughter's on the other side. She sounds exhausted. I remember well how stressful that week can be -- from both sides.
Best wishes. |
My Daughter is on the other side as well. I am so glad I didn't know much about this back when she was a freshman. I would have been much more nervous for her. Good luck to all those going through. Can't wait to see where everyone ends up tomorrow.
|
Wishing her the best! Can't wait to hear how it turns out!
|
No Penn Station East Coast Subs?!?! Hoping for a happy ending!
~BTD...Repping the Dirty DYT...;) |
you know, it wasn't until recently that i knew Penn Station subs were a Cinci area thing... the new headquarters/corporate office is right by my house!

OK< here we go! She went into recruitment knowing nothing about the chapters, and knowing no one in the houses. She didn't have anyone on the inside pulling for her, and at least half of her recs were from people who hadn't met her. In the first round, her favorite was Grater's... she had also liked their presentation best in the Orientation, so it was a win-win for her. She would love to be invited back here. She also loved Procter & Gamble . She was matched here with an active who participated in her (not really common) sport, and they had a really good connection. She would love to be invited back here. Serpentine Wall was another winner in first round parties, since she loved the girl she was matched with. She would love an invitation to second round. Aglamesis made a very positive impression, and the active she was paired with (who she really liked) made it a point of saying that the President was from our girl's neck of the woods. This is another one she would love to see again. Rookwood Pottery was OK, but she is not sure she fits in here. She said that they seemed very preppy, and that is not her style. She noted that the girls were very beautiful and nice, just not sure it is a good fit for her. She would welcome the chance to see if her impression is right or wrong. Skyline was OK. Nothing to dislike, just not as connected here as she was to some of the others. She would welcome an invite back. Gold Star (the other chili) was also OK. Nothing to dislike, just not as conected. She would welcome an invite back. Oktoberfest Not sure about this one. Didn't really feel a connection or a good fit. Her roommate loved this house, but she wasn't feeling it, although she would go back if invited. Big Red Machine This is the only house she really didn't connect with at any level. She felt there was not a good fit, and didn't really think a second visit would change that. Although the Recruitment book said the next round would be 7 parties, they were allowed to list 8, making it very easy for our girl P& G Graters Skyline Alamesis Gold Star Delta Queen Serpentine Wall Rookwood Pottery She listed Big Red Machine and Oktoberfest last. not sure why the frowny face is there....tried to edit it out but no go. No Frownies here!!! |
Oh, the suspense!
|
I had Skyline for dinner the other night.... black bean burrito. And took my son to Graeters in Mariemont for ice cream after his speech therapy on Friday too. YUM.
I love this food theme! Can't wait for the next installment! |
:)
The smiley face makes up for the unexpected frownie in the post above. She got a full party list for second round, 8 invites, so she was thrilled.... EXCEPT... one of her favorites, Graeter's cut her. WHAT??! That was a favorite, and I'm not gonna lie, that hurt. It especially hurt since she had several very personal heartfelt recs for that house. I'm not gonna lie, it hurt ME TOO, since one of those recs was from ME!!! She said everyone in her Pi Chi group wanted an invite from Graters and everyone got cut. (OK, so you know she doesn't end up a KD....) Oh well, we told her to move on, love the ones you're with, and she had lots of other groups that she loved as well. Graters was a favorite, but it wasn't the only favorite and it was only slightly above the others. It was a sting, not a real setback. She was going back to P&G Oktoberfest Skyline Aglamesis Gold Star Delta Queen Serpentine Wall Rookwood Pottery Lots of great places in this list! After this round, She was even more confirmed that Proctor and Gamble, Aglamesis, Delta Queen and Serpentine Wall were great places. Graeters was a distant memory. Skyline moved from "Good, I like it ok" to great, love it. Gold Star, Rookwood Pottery and Oktoberfest were still seen as not great fits for her. Her favorites after this round were Proctor and Gamble Delta Queen but she also really, really liked Aglamesis, Serpentine Wall and Skyline. During this round, she was stuck in a house during a thunder storm with local strikes, and Panhellenic didn't let the women leave the house. They sat in silence, unable to talk to anyone... actives or PNMs for about 20 minutes. That was a strange scenario... sitting in silence, staring into space.... They were allowed to list 4 for next round, and to be honest, I know that P& G and Delta Queen were tops, but don't know if Skyline or Aglamesis or Serpentine Wall rounded out the 4. Those were the top 5 don't know which made the top 4. |
Great story so far. Cna't wait to see how it ends. I know bid day was from 4:30-5:00 today, so don't keep us in suspense too much longer! :0)
|
I am very interested to hear where she ends up;)
|
^^^Momto3, I hear ya! Not going to drag it out. No need at this time.
Soooooo she got the invites back for 4 party day, and saw Delta Queen Proctor & Gamble Rookwood Pottery Oktoberfest Her two favorites Delta Queen and P & G were there, but her other favorites were not, and she would be going back to two that she didn't feel were a good fit. She was very nervous about this round, and this was compounded by the fact that school had started and she already had homework in some difficult classes. She is a serious scholar, and cannot rest easy knowing that there is work to be done. She was already worried that her favorites would drop her for Prefs, and she would be neglecting school for something that didn't pan out in the end. We reassured her that she still had her two favorites, and that she had loved these two groups from the first. We told her to go to the other parties with an open mind, and that she might find something she really loved about them, that she had only talked to a few people so far. We reminded her that Skyline had moved from OK to LOVE in one round, and that could happen with the other two, and then I told her mom to say "It only takes one... you have two." We also reminded her that her roommate who was cute, smart, etc. liked different houses than her, so it's a matter of finding the right connection. We also reminded her that she had a full party schedule and we were sure there were women who did not, and that was something to be grateful for. She looked fabulous, and was excited they could wear sundresses rather than the t shirts that were assigned for the first two rounds. All of the PNM's were already feeling the toll of long days, beginning at 8 am and ending at 8:30 or 9pm, the heat, rain, thunder and missed meals. They ate dinner around 8:3o or so, and at least one day, she arrived home after the campus food service places were all closed down and no way to get any food other than snacks. I know that's not unusual, but you forget how stressful all of this can be until you are following a particular girl through the process. |
She went to the four party day, attending Delta Queen, P&G, Rookwood and Oktoberfest.
She loved Delta Queen and P&G. She could still see herself at these chapters. Conversations were easy and comfortable, she felt that she connected with the women. She was herself at these two chapters. She still wasn't feeling a connection at Rookood or Oktoberfest. One gave off a preppy vibe that didn't seem to be "her". She didn't dislike them, she just didn't see herself as a member. When it came to fill out her card for her top two for pref, it was an easy decision. Delta Queen was running first, with P&G a close second. Rookwood and Oktoberfest were listed as 3 and 4. |
Hope this all turns out well!
Here's a cute article from The Daily Gamecock http://www.dailygamecock.com/news/bi...sh-1.1537615#4 |
Had to go to bed. Recruitment is too hard on us old gals.
Our girl was very, very nervous on Saturday morning, waiting to pick up her invitations. She loved Delta Queen and P&G, and could see herself at either. She did not see herself at Oktoberfest or Rookwood Pottery. She wondered what to do if she got her bottom two, and worried that she would not have any good options. Should she go if she didn't get either one of her top two? Would she have any invites at all? We told her to go to the parties, no matter what, that minds were often changed at Pref, and that she had nothing to lose by going. She didn't need to decide anything, and besides, invitations hadn't been distributed yet...You forget how stressful this is for an 18 year old, and how sophisticated they seem on the outside, but how they still need a lot of support. We also told her that if she got her favorites, now was the time to let the chapters know how she felt. No need to play coy or hard to get. No stalker or needy behavior, but let them know you have loved them from the start. She went off to meet with her Pi Chi, and had time for a quick text to her mom.... Top 2 for Pref! Off to Delta Queen and Procter and Gamble. She had a great time, loved both houses, and could see herself happily accepting a bid at either. She ultimately went with her heart, and put down her true home. Bid Day Sunday, Standing in the horseshoe, facing inward, the Pi Chi's put a wrapped Tshirt in everyone's hands. When everyone had a t shirt, she opened hers to find her colors. She made a quick phone call to her mom, and in the background, my friend could hear screams and squeals, and our girl told her mom that they are now sisters in Delta Queen... Alpha Chi Omega. Sometimes, PNM's go into recruitment with a completely open mind, and fall in love with their legacy house, and sometimes that house loves them right back. We told her that whatever group she joined, we would love them too, but her mom is beyond thrilled to be able to get her beautiful lyre pin out and polish it up for an upcoming initiation. Sometimes, PNM's go into recruitment to meet new friends and find a home far away from home, and sometimes they get that and more. She had a close friend from K-4th grade who moved far away. They stayed in touch for a while, but things being what they are, eventually lost touch. Guess who is a new pledge sister? Congrats to all of the PNMs at SC, and cheers to the moms, grandmas, rec writers and godmothers who supported them along the way. |
Congrats to her and to AXO! Hooray for a very happy ending!
