UGA 2010 Fall Recruitment
I guess I have been 'suffering on the sidelines' here for long enough...so I will post about my daughter's recruitment at UGA in the hopes that other mom/dads or PNMs going through UGA's recruitment will also post so we can commiserate/cheer together. I have no Greek background so both my daughter and I are very grateful to GC and my greek friends for all of the advice and assistance. We did get recs for all 17 sororities, some multiple, and some were from UGA chapters.
We were told at the parent orientation that there were 1274 girls participating at the start of rush. Today is the end of Round One, which took place over two incredibly hot days, with 11 houses yesterday and 6 houses today. The girls met with their recruitment counselors and 'selected' their favorite 12 houses and 'ranked' the remaining 6. (I am still not sure how this select/rank system works.) My daughter sounded extremely exhausted and a bit confused about her choices, but she did the best she could with the short visits she had at the houses. There were a few standouts in her mind but the rest kind of all blended together. She did use a notebook for her thoughts like suggested here on GC. I am hoping with a nap this afternoon, she can go into Round Two a little less overwhelmed. She also sounded a bit homesick (more for her friends than good old mom and dad) and I reminded her that she has a great opportunity for meeting lots of girls both during recruitment and hopefully if she ends up bidding. I guess it's gonna be another sleepless night here.... |
Best of luck and some virtual handholding for you...I know UGA rush well, and it is tough. Hopefully you won't have to, but be prepared to do a lot of consoling when the cuts come, and remind her that ALL houses in Athens have outstanding women. Remind her that the really important thing is that she is a Beautiful Georgia Girl, and she will have a great four years there once she finds her niche, sorority or not.

I would love a happy outcome for both you and your daughter!
She is really fortunate to be at Georgia. I loved time spent at that campus visiting friends. It brings back amazing memories. I believe no matter what she decides she can be happy there! |

17 Sorority Flowers
I decided to use flowers for the code names of the sororities, but won't use carnations, roses or violets since I know these are used for a lot of the symbolic flowers of the 17 sororities. Of course, there is no particular order and if I have somehow assigned a flower that is actually used it was unintentional! So the lovely flowers of UGA are....
Camellias Peonies Sunflowers Tulips Buttercups Snapdragons Gardenias Magnolias Daffodils Jasmine Hydrangeas Lavender Lilies Daisies Orchids Phlox Bluebonnets So for Round Two, the girls select 12/rank 5 and can get invited back to a maximum of 12 events which are House Tours. The girls will find out tomorrow morning at their breakfast meeting with their recruitment counselor, then straight to the buses and tours.... |

Round Two Invites
Daughter texted this morning at 6:45 with her invites for today's Round Two house tours. She received invitations to 10 houses, including her 3 early favorites, the Daisies, Lilies, and Peonies :). The other floral 'hothouses' were the Daffodils, Sunflowers, Tulips, Snapdragons, Buttercups, Magnolias, and Jasmine. Today will be another long day with parties starting at 8:00 and not ending until 5:30, with selections with recruitment counselors from 6:30-7:30. It is supposed to be very hot again, 100 degrees with a heat index of 112!

UGA on the inside
My daughter is on the inside this year, so I can well understand what you parents are going through with Recruitment. It is hot, your daughter has just arrived on campus, and they are overwhelmed. I will tell you the quality of young woman who is now attending UGA is really setting a very, very high bar. These girls must be stellar to get into UGA. I heard the acceptance level is about 3.9, so these are all great young woman.
My daughter tells me each house is looking for those special young ladies. It is really hard with the beastly hot weather to shine. The sisters want to make a good impression as well. They KNOW what it is like on the sidewalk. They do have their favorites, but I heard repeatedly about girls who just bloomed during recruitment. They talked, they were funny, they really clicked with their hostess. As in any friendship, if it clicks, it works. Your daughters will get through this. It is an ongoing process of adaptation and adjustment. They will find their spots and they will shine. Tell them their sisters are waiting for them and they are just as nervous and excited. |
Round One Photos
Just found the first photos of Round One. This website posts photos of each day, mainly the PNMs waiting in the morning for the buses to take them to Milledge Ave. It's fun to see what they are all wearing...

Now Tornadoes????
Just got a text from Daughter that she had to 'duck and cover' at the Lilies, because the tornado siren had gone off....don't know, guess this could be good for a conversation topic ???? But wondering if she had to 'duck and cover' for the whole party and didn't get to talk since this is one of her favorite houses. Also, not sure how that is working with the rest of the day's schedule. She had another party right after. Really tired of worrying about this crazy weather!

Round Three
Daughter called last night and updated about the tornado warning during Round Two...She said they had just finished the house tour and were heading out the door when the recruitment counselor came running up and told the actives to go to the basement and the PNMs to stay on the first floor (guess even during a tornado warning they wanted everyone to play fair :)). Eventually, it was over and they all went on to the last two events on a slightly delayed schedule. At the end of Round Two, Daughter's favorites were still the Lilies, Sunflowers and Daisies, but she had also started to really like the Magnolias much better. She loved the Lilies and Magnolia's houses and also thought that the Magnolias were just so friendly. The Sunflowers seemed really interested in her during conversations and the Daisies, well, she just liked them before even arriving in Athens because she knew some of the girls. Daughter had been to 10 events, so she selected her top 6, and ranked the remaining 4....

Round Three Invites:
Daughter texted with her invitations. Overall, she was happy, but she had lost one of her early favs, the Daisies. She knew several girls in this house and had been excited about them, but knew they would make heavy cuts after round two :(. She also was cut from the Peonies and the Sunflowers, two very popular houses, which was disappointing. However, she was very happy because she had a full day of 6 invites including one of her very favorites, the Lilies. She also had the Magnolias which were quickly becoming a favorite, and the Daffodils, Snapdragons, Buttercups, and Jasmine. She knows she is doing very well to have a full day with 4 houses she likes a lot, and two she still isn't sure about. I told her about the stories I had read on GC where many PNMs had new favorites after Philanthropy/Skit rounds because there was more opportunity to really learn about the houses. She knows to start with fresh eyes today :).

@SouthernComfor, thank you for posting the links to the photos. Holy Cow! What stunning young women, gorgeous dresses, I'm just gobsmacked. It's got to be difficult for both sides of recruitment. Best of luck to your daughter and to all the other PNMs.
I forgot to do the quote function but appreciated what momuga wrote and I think it bears repeating: "It is an ongoing process of adaptation and adjustment. They will find their spots and they will shine. Tell them their sisters are waiting for them and they are just as nervous and excited." |
Round Three Photos
Wow, they've already posted photos for today's round. The PNMs all look so beautiful. Good Luck!

I'm guessing the PiChis (RhoChis? what are they called there?) are in the vests with pink name tags. So much fun seeing these photos. Good luck to everyone!

Beautiful dresses - but when did hemlines get so short? And I'm not that old! Do they have to sit on the floor during this round? How do they do it? I know most of those girls are nice young ladies, so they must have received some damn good training in how to sit in those things!
|
So many beautiful young women!! I'm absolutely amazed!
Good luck to your daughter SouthernComfor!!! I hope she has a great day! |

And, as an old woman who hearkens from the day of the micro mini: To sit down carefully rotate the hip slightly (left or to the right), lower yourself and sit. Except for Chelsea Handler (and a few guests) do not cross the leg at the knee. Rather cross at the ankle which also helps to prevent varicose veins. Keep those knees together at all times. To stand up, one foot slightly in front of the other: elevate. Back in the day we wore skirts just south of the border, so to speak. Never would now, but DD does. Back to the gorgeous Georgia girls. |

Glad to help. And it will all work out..it will.

Round Three is over and heard from Daughter whose voice is a bit hoarse. I have tried not to 'grill' her everyday, so info has been sparse, but she seemed like she wanted to talk it out today. She and her roommate, who is also going through recruitment, both enjoyed today's visits but felt more nervous than previous days. Daughter felt like she was 'awkward' in conversation with the Magnolias, her first house of the day, because she was so nervous after seeing all of the upset PNMs with heavy cuts of the morning. I think they feel the stakes going up and really want to be asked back to those favorite houses. Even though they both had really full event schedules they both are worried about not being asked back, so I tried to gently remind them how good things were going so far. Then the conversation took a lighter turn with Daughter talking about all the yummy food and how the food had changed from paper napkins and ice water to fruit smoothies in beautiful glasses and shakes from the Varsity! (She also mentioned a poor PNM spilling a red fruit drink on the light carpet at one house. Daughter felt sooo bad for the girl.) We also had a laugh about her 'duck and cover' during the tornado siren yesterday and how she had managed to still get invited back to that house. One of the things she told was a bit bothersome...she had a friend's mom who had written one of her recs texting her, which I'm sure the mom did to encourage and support Daughter, but which actually made Daughter more nervous and also made Daughter feel bad when she had to tell the mom that she had been cut from that house this morning :(. Daughter said she has one top favorite, still the Lilies, but also very much likes 4 others, Magnolias, Jasmine, Buttercups, and Daffodils, but still doesn't feel much rapport with the Snapdragons. Her 3 selections for Preference Round are Lilies, Magnolias, and the Buttercups. Tomorrow morning they are happy to be sleeping in an extra hour and don't have to meet their Gamma Chis until 7:15 instead of the usual 6:00am. (I doubt this means any extra sleep for mom, I will probably be tossing and turning hearing a phantom cell phone buzz, ha!)

Exciting! Georgia recruitment is HUGE!
Along with the hemlines, I never expected to see so much, strapless-ness at SEC recruitment. But then again I've never experienced a Georgia summer, so a nice cardigan would probably be UNTHINKABLE. |

Preference Round
:) Happy Daughter this morning... For Preference Round she will be going back to the Lilies, Magnolias and the Buttercups, all three of her selections! It will be really interesting to see what she thinks after Prefs because the Lilies have been her favorite from the start of recruitment, but she really likes those Magnolias and Buttercups now, too. She is a lucky girl to have 3 great choices at this point. (Her mom thinks the houses are lucky too!)
|
Good luck to her on preference! I'm glad she got her top choices!
