Real fast pref night dress help

Out of mild curiosity, would a dress like this be too casual for Pref Night?

This?

Lady Pi 08-11-2010 09:51 PM

The link just takes you to the homepage, but I'm guessing something from Target will probably be too casual.

perfectinpurple 08-11-2010 09:54 PM

Yeah, the link isn't working... but I'll agree with Lady Pi. Unless your school has a really laid back recruitment, Target isn't the best option.

Aerylle 08-11-2010 09:59 PM

Hm. Dunno why the link isn't working. ]:

But yeah, you are probably right.

Never mind. :]

That's not necessarily true (if it's from the Mossimo misses line or the Merona line it might be dressy enough).

But the link worked for me and no it is not dressy enough.

If you're shooting for Target, look for a dress with a black tag (instead of a pink or red one) - these are from the Misses line and are a little longer/more covered/more appropriate for preference night. I don't think the monthly line is dressy clothes this quarter.

Try everything at Target on - sometimes the fit is wrong or it'll be waaaaay short.

/end I worked at Target for far too long

Some places where you might be able to find a dress that is fancy enough for the same price range are: Forever21, TJMaxx, Marshalls, and Ross. You can also check out sales that department stores are having because they might still be unloading summer dresses for cheap. (Though be certain of their return policy on sale items when you buy, in case you think you'll change your mind.) All the stores I listed can be hit and miss, hence the "might". Worth looking, though!

perfectinpurple 08-11-2010 10:07 PM

Personally, I think almost everything at Forever 21 is too short. Please be sure to try anything you are considering from there on.

Lady Pi 08-11-2010 10:09 PM

OMG YES booty grazers!

Black "tag"?

The tags? Like, the price tag? The tag on the inside of the dress?

Online they're titled Mossimo Black and Merona.

perfectinpurple 08-11-2010 10:14 PM

The price tag... they're color coordinated to tell you which department the item is from

Oooh.

Okay. :]

Aerylle 08-11-2010 10:19 PM

So something like this or this or this?

agzg 08-11-2010 10:20 PM

Right. Red or Pink tags means it's from the Junior's section. I would avoid the Junior's section or clothes that come in odd sizes (3, 5, 7, 9) because it's likely not appropriate.

I'd also avoid stores that sell everything in odd sizes.

At Target, the misses section clothes have black or gray tags (the price tags on merona clothes are gray, I think, but the tag that has the size in the back are black or white) and are in even sizes (0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 22). "Misses" dresses are usually a little longer (remember - it's best to try it on first) and a little more appropriate for this type of situation.

I was looking at the website - the formatting is all off for some reason. That could be why no one saw it before (for me there was a big white space then if you scrolled down the item was at the bottom). I did see some dresses online though that did look like they could be appropriate.

Please avoid the gold lame' dress that's up though, thanks.

Those are closer, but as a matter of personal tastes (and what we would see on pref night on my own campus), I prefer these:

Red One This one comes in other colors - but maybe only black

LBD #1

"Silver" * I would say this is silver-ish

Navy (this one comes in other colors)

IrishLake 08-11-2010 10:32 PM

all those links just go to the Target homepage :( HOWEVER, I HAVE found some very nice semi-formal type dresses there before. So I won't discourage you :-)

perfectinpurple 08-11-2010 10:33 PM

The navy is my favorite! I especially like it with the cute belt.

I might just have to get myself one for only $30

If the title of the page has something like "merona women's twist..." scroll all the way down to the bottom - I have no idea why Target's website is so funky.

Must be the whole intertubes are having a formatting error tonight. :p

It's best to try on ANYTHING you buy, but that is a good point to consider...I'm short so I very rarely have length problems (well, too short anyway...almost everything is too long), but a lot of my dresses from there would probably be way too short for recruitment on someone who is 5'9"+.

Stores like Forever21 are very hit and miss. Sometimes they will have dresses that do not look cheap, are classy, and appropriate for the occasion. Sometimes there won't be one thing that would be appropriate. It's partially luck.

Alumiyum 08-11-2010 10:44 PM

All the dresses agzg would be good examples of what to look for if you are getting a pref dress from Target.

Do be sure to try things on, and if you order online give yourself enough time to send them back for a different size if the first one doesn't fit. I've called my local Target before, too, to see if they had an item I saw online in store. Usually they did and they were always helpful.

agzg 08-11-2010 10:46 PM

You can also return items bought online to the local store, whether or not they carry it locally.

Best idea, though, is if there's a Target in your area, check it first. That way you can try on and not waste your time on dresses that will be to short or fit weird (and Target really does have a very finicky fit).

Time problem solved, then. So to the OP, Target might just be the place to go after all.

I also buy a LOT of my accessories there, so if you find the right dress, it can be a one stop shop if you need shoes or jewelry to go with it. My local store at least seems to have a pretty good selection year round and it's usually easy to find things that look exactly like what I see in boutiques, for wayyyyyyy less.

agzg 08-11-2010 10:58 PM

I saw some really cute shoes at Target the last time I was there.

Particularly if you like flats (I really do).

Aerylle 08-11-2010 11:00 PM

Well I was planning on hitting Target for some last minute items anyway so I'll check there to see if they have any good dresses as well!

Thank you everyone!

AXOrushadvisor 08-11-2010 11:30 PM

Navy one is my favorite and IMO the most appropriate. Good work, great price and you'll be able to wear that one again.

Hi am rushing this semester at University of Miami and I am a sophomore. I really need some help in deciding what to wear for preference night. The rush guide says semi formal/cocktail dress but I am not sure what that is. I would really appreciate the help! Also is this dress to formal?
Thanks!

Without knowing what school you attend, I'd say it's a bit racy for Pref.

Like I said in your other threads, it's too bare, too short and too low cut. Dress to impress other women, not to attract guys.
