UCF Recruitment Fall 2010

Retro movies, modern recruitment!

So I'm Kristen. I'm a sophomore at UCF and I couldn't be more excited about recruitment! I've been dreaming about joining a sorority since Legally Blonde came out (and I have no issues saying that =P) and now that it's almost here I can hardly contain my excitement! I love reading the recruitment stories on here, especially the live ones, so mine will be live! Our orientation is Aug 16 and then on the 17th we start going to houses! I'm so excited to find my sisters!!

Up until recruitment actually starts, I'm gonna be updating here with little things I'm doing to get ready, etc.

And here we go...

The theme of this recruitment thread will be... SEVENTIES MOVIES!! The 70s was definitely my favorite decade in film. Hopefully everyone else will enjoy the story and the movies =P

Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Grease
Jaws
Kramer vs. Kramer
Paper Moon
Rocky
Rocky Horror Picture Show
Star Wars
Taxi Driver
Willy Wonka

=D Hope everyone else going through recruitment is as excited as I am!

Much love, Kristen

Kristen,
I can't wait to read all about your endeavors.

Be careful what you post, I already know your name, your college status, and major... and if you mention anything about potentially going to FSU and switching, plenty of girls can figure out who you are on here.

Not to discourage you, just want the best ending for you!!

I love UCF stories, ahem, I may be partial :) But Good luck!!

<3 an UCF alum

Good Luck!

southbymidwest 08-07-2010 07:23 PM

Yay Rocky Horror Picture Show! They used to have midnight showings for a couple of years at a local movie theater in my college town-nothing like going to parties and ending up at the midnight showing. The people watching and audience participation were as fun as the movie. BTW, I saw Tim Curry in something recently-unfortunately he has not aged gracefully. Kinda looked like he had been ridden hard and put away wet. Anyway, good luck, I hope you enjoy the experience and find a great home!

oooh thanks! I didn't even think about that. Silly me =P I edited my post, hopefully it helped?

Thanks for the well wishes everyone =]

LOVE the theme!!! You PNMs just get more creative each year with the themes. Good luck!

UCFlove 08-07-2010 09:34 PM

Ahh I'm so excited!!! I won't say much since I am a UCF active but PLEASE keep and open mind and make THE MOST of the upcoming week, if you do chances are you will find a really great place to call home. Good Luck with Recruitment!

FSUZeta 08-08-2010 01:59 PM

yay for a florida thread!! good luck krrrristen!

ellebud 08-08-2010 02:34 PM

kramer vs. kramer...taxi driver...you have outstanding (and unconventional for your age) taste in movies. Kudos

krrrristen 08-08-2010 02:56 PM

thank you elle! i'm a super huge movie geek =P

I potentially have a rec for Rocky Horror. I'm thinking I should follow through with that (since it's the only rec I could have... no greeks in my family or close friends), but then I also wonder if it's worth the trouble to just get one rec. 700 girls go through recruitment, I can't imagine one recommendation making that much of a difference (especially since the UCF Pan website says that if a sorority needs a recommendation for you they will get one). Thoughts?

Drolefille 08-08-2010 02:59 PM

Get the one rec, one is better than none. And the chapters don't know how many recs you got for any chapter but for themselves.

FSUZeta 08-08-2010 05:57 PM

kristen, get recs.

Yes, double kudos...and oh to think of the skits that might go w/ some of these choices.

Agree w/ everyone who said get recs...ask around and try to find them for ALL the sororities. It's kind of late but try anyway.

I don't think that a chapter is going to secure recs from 700 PNMs. In fact, I think as a PNM, you should secure the rec through an alumna. I hear that UCF recruitment is getting more competitive year by year.

krrrristen 08-09-2010 01:12 PM

@Mittens... very true. Also, since I'm a sophomore it is definitely going to benefit me (Don't you love how I asked that question like I didn't know the answer? I totally did.)

My sponsor for Rocky Horror had actually already mailed in a rec for me without saying anything! I was so relieved that she did that. I've been going through old high school friends and found three who could write them for me (granted, they're all actives, but I figure that's better than nothing). If all goes well, by this time tomorrow I will know for sure whether or not I have them for Taxi Driver, Willy Wonka, and Rocky (also potentially Close Encounters, but I'm not counting on that one). Thanks for the support everyone, I don't think you know how much it means to me. <3

CougarGrad 08-09-2010 03:28 PM

Good luck, Kristen!

It's just a jump to the left...

krrrristen 08-10-2010 10:39 PM

Less than a week left! It's so soon! I'm really worried about recs. My friends have offered to write me recs if they have time. I definitely should have been better prepared with the recommendations D= I know it will all work out in the end, but I'm really stressed right now.

I am proud of myself right now though for not spending any money on my recruitment outfits! =] Haha. I've got it all planned out and I'm gonna be lookin' real cute! =P

I am more excited to see where you end up! I have a friend that is greek at UCF and the last 2 recruitment stories I read about UCF, the PNMs both ended up pledging the same sorority where my friend is a member! :D Don't stress too much about the recs! Get ready for recruitment next week! :)

good for you. no one is going to know if you have on brand news clothes or things you have had in your wardrobe for a while-they are meeting you for the first time, after all. the key is to look good in what you wear and it sounds like you have that covered. good luck!

krrrristen 08-11-2010 03:14 PM

So I went shopping with my mom today at Salvation Army and bought the cutest Lilly Pulitzer dress for 3 dollars!!! I still haven't decided if I'm wearing it next week, it needs to get taken in a little, but I'm so excited with my purchase that I wanted to share it in here anyway haha! It doesn't take much money to have great outfits for recruitment!!

Also, while I was with my mom today we talked to her good friend who is a DG and has a daughter at Florida in their Rocky chapter. She reminded me that I will end up right where I belong, recs or no recs. It was really great talking to her-- she definitely calmed my fears quite a bit.

FSUZeta 08-11-2010 04:05 PM

i have 2 friends who can shop at tj maxx, marshalls, etc. and look like they bought their outfit at saks, so as you say, it doesn't take a lot of money!

krrrristen 08-13-2010 11:53 AM

So some exciting news (at least for me). Both of my roommates from last year are participating in recruitment! One of them is in Taxi Driver & she is going to be rushing people, and the other is going through recruitment with me! It will be nice to have someone I know there with me, even though we are very different =P

Not much left to say... getting my hair done today & then I'll be 100% ready for Monday night when recruitment starts!! =D

Much <3, Kristen

Hahaha! Based on what went down in the dorm room last year, she's definitely an Iris =P

That is amazing! I love those great finds!

ASUADPi 08-15-2010 07:45 PM

I'm gonna have to go with Star Wars.

Good Luck

UCFlove 08-15-2010 09:49 PM

Aww, I had a friend that was rushing in a house too and it really does make you feel more comfortable with your whole day. I can't wait to see who your Rho is and what a great time you have! This is the first UCF story I've seen since mine and it makes me remember my rush and how much has happened in the last year! Enjoy every minute of it! :)

Much <3, Kristen

when i first read this post, i thought you said that your friend had a job as a taxi driver, and i was thinking "oh dear, i hope her schedule can be arranged so she can make all the parties." lol! glad i reread it.

UCF0405 08-16-2010 10:12 AM

i LOVE finding amazing finds for clothes. we have a consignment store in my hometown and they ALWAYS have really adorable vintage bags/clothes/jewelry etc.

two of my rush outfits are actually my little sisters. lol im so glad we can share clothes!

krrrristen 08-16-2010 01:35 PM

@FSUZeta: hahaha! Yeahhh that would be pretty difficult.

@UCF: Oh man! I wish I had a sister to share clothes with! I just have a brother... I've always wanted a sister =P

Orientation is tonight! I'm so excited but I'm getting nervous again =P Thanks everyone for your kind words!

TheMightyPen 08-16-2010 03:23 PM

Have fun and try to relax...

I would like to send out a big hug to all the UCF PNMs and remind you to relax, have fun, and meet new people regardless of their future Greek/non-Greek affiliations.

Go Knights!

krrrristen 08-16-2010 03:39 PM

Thanks Mighty. I'm sorry I'm like spamming this thread but I'm much better at keeping up with "diaries" online and I want to remember this whole experience! I woke up and spent about an hour trying to pick out what to wear tonight (I had a few options), and now I am 100% hating all of my possible outfits and am rummaging through the closet like crazy trying to find something to wear. I'm so lame!

TheMightyPen 08-16-2010 03:57 PM

Deep breaths...

Believe it or not, 15 years later, I did the same thing last night trying to figure out what to wear so that my sister and brother-in-law could take me out for a belated birthday dinner...

I hope you've found a great outfit, but remember the best thing you can wear is self-confidence. Take some deep breaths and remember that when you're having a good time in a relaxed state of mind, others around you will relax, too....

Have fun and thanks for keeping us posted!

PS: No one has ever called me Mighty, but I think I like it!

Haha! By the power vested in me, I dub thee "Mighty". =P

I found a great dress to wear. I'm kinda a dress freak. All I need right now is some fashion tape and I'm good to go! I feel a lot better in this dress than I did in my shorts earlier. When you feel cute, other people notice!

krrrristen 08-17-2010 12:28 AM

So maybe the shorts would have been a better idea, given the whole "sitting on the floor" deal. I love my Rho Gamma and the other ladies in my group--most of us are sophomores--and I can't wait till tomorrow! Starting the day tomorrow at Taxi Driver, and I have to get to school early to pick up my parking permit. I've got my bag packed and my clothes picked out! I'll post about my experience at UCF Day tomorrow night!

How exciting! I wish you and the rest of UCF PNMs the best of luck!!

keysgirl 08-17-2010 03:45 PM

My daughter is an active member of a sorority at UCF. I can't wait to read your story!

krrrristen 08-17-2010 10:51 PM

Oof! I am so completely exhausted... my day was 12 hours long at UCF today (granted, I'm including the time I was there to get my parking permit). Visited all 10 chapters, ate lunch, and waited 3 hours to turn in our choices.

So yeah here goes!!!!

Taxi Driver was the first house of the day. I already knew to expect cheering and stuff from reading the stories on here but OH GOODNESS. I HAD NO IDEA WHAT I WAS IN FOR! I was double rushed and bumped twice. One of my rushers actually was my roommate from last year, so it was nice to get to see her =] I didn't have a huge connection to this house today, but I know that I get along with my ex-roomie and therefore I'm guessing there are some others in her group I'll like too.

Rocky Horror was next. I was really excited to meet this group, but not gonna lie, I didn't really get that spark I was hoping for. I hit it off really well with one of my rushers, but only one of the three.

Paper Moon was the first house I really liked. I got along with my rusher so well-- our conversation flowed the entire time, they didn't bump or double rush, and we were a lot alike! The group was really nice and energetic, but not so much so that it seemed fake. You could tell they all really loved their sorority.

Star Wars was a sorority I had a big misconception about. The ladies I talked to were so nice to me and not fake at all. They totally understood where I was coming from when I said I wanted sisters and not just a bunch of people to go to parties with.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind was the second biggest surprise of the day to Star Wars. I didn't know what to expect at this house, I hadn't really heard much about it at UCF, but the second I walked in my rusher and I began talking like old friends. We were so similar! Regardless of where I pledge I totally can see myself staying close with her.

Kramer vs. Kramer was probably my biggest disappointment. I didn't really hit it off with any of the ladies I spent time with, but their philanthropy is so interesting to me. Hopefully I'll get to go back tomorrow for philanthropy day and show my enthusiasm for it.

Jaws was next. This is one of those sororities that everyone wants to join, but I decided to go in with a completely open mind and not let the stereotypes associated with the group sway my opinions. I ended up absolutely loving all three girls who rushed me--they were all big into sisterhood and philanthropy which are my two main interests as far as sorority life goes. I really liked this house and hope I'm invited back tomorrow.

Willy Wonka was crazy. I wasn't feeling too well (stupid Florida heat), and I was double rushed by a girl I had nothing in common with. The other girl being rushed (idk if this is proper terminology but I promise it makes sense in my head) was from the same town, high school, major, etc as our rusher. I just really didn't get a good vibe from her.

Grease was another big surprise. I had so much in common with the girl who rushed me and our conversation flowed really easily the entire time.
LAST HOUSE!!

Rocky was our last house of the day. My first rusher and I didn't really have that much in common, and I can't really say my second rusher and I had a lot in common either; however, the second girl who rushed me had very similar ideas about sisterhood and what a sorority should be to me, and I think that's why I ended up liking her so much.

At the end of the day (well... 3 hours after the end of the day), my rankings went like this:

(in order we visited... we don't rank our top 8 houses)
Taxi Driver
Rocky Horror
Paper Moon
Star Wars
Close Encounters
Kramer vs. Kramer
Jaws
Rocky

------------
9. Grease
10. Willy Wonka

As of right now, I definitely have my top 3/4 (which I'm sure you can tell by reading my descriptions of them), but I'm staying very open to all of my possibilities still. I'll update y'all tomorrow during the day with my list if I can, then I'll recap once I get home. I had so much fun today but I am so completely exhausted! I'm going to bed as soon as I post this, which is wayyyy early for me!

Hope everyone (especially the other ladies rushing at UCF) had a great day today! Thanks for all the well wishes; it means a lot. <3

Pirouette 08-17-2010 11:07 PM

Aw, I was really hoping you'd like Rocky Horror (I actually once was in a production of this musical, so obviously I like it).

Anyways, good luck tomorrow! I can't imagine going through recruitment in that kind of heat & humidity.

FSUZeta 08-18-2010 08:14 AM

good luck today krrristen.
