an ultra-nerdy recruitment story!

I start rushing in less than two weeks, so here we go! Thought I'd get a head start. I won't be doing this live, maybe delayed by two or three days, but we'll see. Anyway, in all the fun of codenames, I've decided on a blast to the past from my childhood...

Pokemon. :) My school has 14 chapters, ergo, 14 pokemon. Color coding isn't my thing...so I'll do pictures instead.

I'm really excited. :) May the BATTLES BEGIN! (seriously, I warned you it was going to be nerdy.)

Miriverite 08-03-2010 10:02 PM

You have made my day. I don't know who to root for since they're all so awesome D: But I guess it'll have to be Zapdos, since birds + electric = AWESOME.

CherrySonata 08-03-2010 10:18 PM

Some of the images don't show up.

At any rate, I am LOVING this theme! Although, Charmander always was my favorite Pokemon.

No seriously. Best. Theme. Ever.

Aerylle 08-03-2010 10:33 PM

Good luck! Snorlax FTW!

rococobaby 08-03-2010 10:54 PM

LOVE LOVE LOVE!! I'm rooting for Eevee and Mew ;)

jennyj87 08-03-2010 11:16 PM

two "nerdy" threads in a couple days....

hmmmm

cad2010 08-04-2010 01:27 AM

at first I was *slightly* distressed that you decided to one-up me with your title haha ;) but I do appreciate pokemon and I'm hoping you go with Squirtle, because he is the best, hands down.

TakeALook 08-04-2010 01:32 AM

I will always root for Snorlax.
(you should have used Slowbro. Greatest pokemon name)

Ahhh! I was all, "Awww there's gonna be a smackdown!" LOL jk ;) Nerdy PNMs should stick together... right? :P Right? :P lol.

I think Mew and Eevee are my tops though... I really like Articuno and Rapidash a lot too, though. I have a feeling that Magicarp will be a dud :(

Right! besides, nerds don't have "smackdowns" we would, in this particular case, play a few rounds of Pokemon RPG with all the cards we've saved since 3rd grade haha.

Thank you heyheymeganj--you have distracted me from my own nerves with the wonderful world of pokemon :).

(but really, Squirtle FTW)

lovespink88 08-04-2010 11:20 AM

I wasn't really into Pokemon, but I did play a lot of Super Smash brothers. I always thought the Snorlax Pokeball was funny, so I'll root for him (it?)

ASUADPi 08-04-2010 06:00 PM

good luck with recruitment

perfectinpurple 08-04-2010 06:08 PM

I love the theme! I'm going with Rapidash and Eevee.

Good Luck!

First of all, Squirtle is one of those words that I'd post in THIS thread - http://www.greekchat.com/gcforums/sh...d.php?t=109373

I was already going to say Snorlax FTW, but after I read this...

..I am even more in love with the idea of him coming out on top! And I'm also in love with lovespink88 for bringing this up! :D

CherrySonata 08-04-2010 07:06 PM

I still think that a Magicarp ending would be epic! :o

Regarding Smash Bros, tell me you mean the N64 version and not the Wii one? :)

cad2010 08-04-2010 08:35 PM

haha, what don't you like about that word, ASTalumna06? To me it's just a name for a squirrel/ turtle hybrid.

MUSK81 08-04-2010 08:50 PM

Actually, it's my kids who were into Pokemon - one of them is an incoming freshman this year. Since my initials are EV, my favorite Pokemon is Eevee, so that's who I'm pulling for.

I don't even know of this Wii version you speak of!

I'm glad to read that there won't be a clash of the nerds.

Best of luck to you in Recruitment!

LOL it sounds like the nickname of a girl who 'squirts.' Back in high school there was a girl who chewed with her mouth open and also talked while eating, and she would spit on people all the time (accidentally of course). I guess she is a 'squirtle'?

ETA: My little brother has just informed me that the correct term is 'gleeking'?

MUSK81 08-05-2010 09:09 AM

Does this mean the chapters on your campus "gotta catch'em all"? :D

FleurGirl 08-05-2010 12:48 PM

Go Squirtle!! :D

twinkle555 08-06-2010 12:06 PM

There's nothing "squirrel" about Squirtle. Squirtle is a water pokemon that looks like a Turtle and can squirt water. Its attacks are all water attacks. And, Squirtle is absolutely adorable but I have to root for Rapidash.
And, in case anybody wonders WHY I would know Pokemon.. well, my (now) 14 year old son used to be VERY into them and so did my 16 year old daughter, actually. We had Pokemon cards, Pokemon Sorry game, Pokemon videos.. I kinda miss those days :)

And I loved our Huge stuffed Pikachu. Peeeeek ahhh chooooo :)

Mew and Eevee are my favorites!! I'm totally rooting for them =P

I'm so excited for the fall. Can't wait to read about your adventures!

I do too ... My 18 y.o. rising college freshman still likes to play with the cards sometimes.

Alright, I don't still have the cards...but I won't lie, I still play the GameBoy games. They're just SO FUN.

Benzgirl 08-08-2010 09:15 PM

My guess is that she will join Omega Mu.

Yes! I got the original blue for an 11th (?) birthday present, along with my first gameboy-- it was a gameboy pocket. I actually can't remember how old I was but it was the first videogame I ever got that I never had to share with my older sister :)

My boyfriend keeps threatening to buy gameboy games. I just laugh. I was never into pokemon other than Vulpix being super cute to me. Lol

LyrePantsOnFire 08-08-2010 10:27 PM

This is the first recruitment thread I've decided to follow since joining GC. Best of luck and have fun!

I'm totally cheering for Articuno, because c'mon, it's the coolest Pokemon out there. Eh? Eh? Articuno? Ice Pokemon? Cool? ...I'll stop.

heyheymeganj 08-23-2010 02:38 PM

Here we go:

1. Vileplume

This was the first house we went to, and I won’t lie to you…I was terrified. They warned us about the chanting and singing, but there’s really no way to prepare yourself for that, haha. The girl I talked to was really nice, but it seemed like she was trying really hard to sell the sorority to me instead of getting to know me. They were the newest chapter and she actually said at one point that they were just looking for lots of new members, which kinda turned me off to them a little. I definitely did like this house overall though and could maybe see myself fitting in here.

2. Pikachu

These girls were SOOOO loud. I loved it! I talked to two girls in this house and they were both nice and we talked about things other than sorority stuff, which was a much appreciated break. While I was talking to the second girl her pearl necklace broke and scattered all over the floor – I felt so bad! Overall, I really liked Pikachu.

3. Moltres

I talked to three really awesome girls here. We had conversation beyond the sorority and really clicked with quite a few girls. I guess a lot of people had dud conversations here, but I really enjoyed this party.

4. Zapdos

The girl I talked to at this house was so nervous (I could tell and she mentioned it more than once). She was incredibly sweet though and wouldn’t stop complimenting my accessories. We both had the same major (not uncommon at my school, though) so we had things to talk about. The girls I talked to here were sweet and I wouldn’t mind coming back, but it wasn’t one of my favorites.

5. Rapidash

This house has a really bad reputation on campus (according to the other PNMs I talked to – tent talk, I know, but sometimes you can’t escape) so I really didn’t know what to expect going in. I don’t know what the other girls were talking about, but I had a nice time here. The girls were so sweet and seemed to genuinely care about their sisterhood, and the rumors seemed stupid. Didn’t really feel too much of a connection, but everyone was very nice and I wouldn’t mind coming back.

6. Snorlax

These girls wore adorable flowers in their hair, and it was so cute. I felt like the conversation lagged a little bit and my rusher just rambled on about random stories, and sometimes it was a little hard to follow. When she started talking about the philanthropies I really started to connect. She seemed genuinely connected to her house and had a lot of affection towards her sisters, and Snorlax is definitely one of my favorites after first round.

7. Mew

This house was so loud and I talked to two VERY quiet girls. I couldn’t hear basically anything they said and I didn’t really have a good time at this party. I felt so bad having to say “I’m sorry, what?” after every sentence.

8. Eevee

The first thing I noticed was that this was one of the prettiest houses on campus. So gorgeous! I talked to two really nice girls here, and the second girl and I joked around about our cell phone carrier and how much it sucked – it was a good conversation. However, I didn’t have a rec here and with so many girls honestly I didn’t expect to get asked back. I was a little sad because I really liked Eevee.

9. Dragonite

I loved this house so much. I talked to three or four girls and clicked with every single one – the house was gorgeous and they all seemed so excited about their sisterhood and philanthropies. I felt like I could definitely fit in here.

10. Magikarp

Loved Magikarp. Straight up. The house was gorgeous, the sisters were so sweet and (I thought) we had very genuine conversations. Really, really hoped to go back to Magikarp.

11. Squirtle

I absolutely out of my mind fell in love with this house. The house was gorgeous, the girls were dressed up more than the other chapters which I thought was very classy, and I had wonderful conversations with all of them. This was the house that exceeded in academics which was also very important to me, so I really, really, really hoped to go back here. It was definitely my favorite of round one.

12. Alakazam
Wasn’t a big fan of this house. It was only my second house and they all seemed tired and uninterested in what I had to say – all 6 of the girls I talked to. There was really no connection, especially with the girls being bumped so fast and I could not see myself fitting in here at all. This was my least favorite.

13. Charizard

These girls were very sweet and we had some hilarious conversations. All I remember from this house is liking it a lot.

14. Articuno

This house was absolutely GORGEOUS! I was paired with a girl I didn’t match with so well, but the second girl I talked to seemed nicer and more suited to me. It was a good party, but not great.

We do an accept/regret system, and we picked our top ten and ranked the final four. Mine went as follows:

(in no order)
Vileplume
Articuno
Charizard
Squirtle
Eevee
Magikarp
Dragonite
Snorlax
Pikachu
Moltres

1. Zapdos
2. Rapidash
3. Mew
4. Alakazam

Ms. President 08-23-2010 03:45 PM

So excited to read more! Good luck!
GO SNORLAX!!!

heyheymeganj 08-23-2010 11:56 PM

My schedule for the next day looked like so:

http://www.funcoolavatars.com/avatar.../Vileplume.gifhttp://avatars.postiton.net/avatars/Moltres.gifhttp://www.pocketmoon.com/phpbb/imag...rmalSprite.gifhttp://img6.imageshack.us/img6/2808/078rapidash.pnghttp://avatars.postiton.net/avatars/Dragonite.gifhttp://bmgf.bulbagarden.net/images/avatars/052.gifhttp://cdn.entertonement.com/image/0.../493/small.jpg

I was disappointed to not have a full schedule, but I got my favorites back so I wasn't upset. Not bad!

Vileplume: I liked this house a lot less. Their skit looked like they had thrown it together last minute, and the sisters looked very apathetic. I was slightly unimpressed and wished I had seen enthusiasm like I had in other houses.

Moltres: I was still so-so about this house. Their skit was cute and the sisters seemed to get along with each other, but I didn't know if I felt at home.

Zapdos: I really, really fell in love with this house this round. Their skit was so cute and I talked to two very nice girls. I got double rushed though after the skit, which made it really hard to make a connection.

Rapidash: Wasn't a fan of this house. I had a girl who seemed completely uninterested in me and I had to force on the conversation, but we did a house tour and the house was very nice!

Dragonite: Once again, loved this house. Their skit almost made me tear up, I just really felt at home here.

Magikarp: I had a not so good experience here. The girl talking to me heard something another PNM next to me was saying and joined in their conversation and completely ignored me the entire time. It was so frustrating.

Squirtle: I tried so hard not to, but I got so attached to this house. The girls were so sweet and their skit was hilarious, and I talked to so many different girls and had such good conversations about everything from grades to theater to philanthropies. I left so confident I would be invited back.

We had a max of 10, and had to cut down to 6, so I could only "regret" one house. I cut Vileplume.

annabella 08-24-2010 01:28 AM

Is it weird that I'm picturing actives in matching Pokemon costumes instead of Panhel tshirts? What an awesome walkout that would be.

hillstreet 08-24-2010 04:17 AM

So excited for you! Good luck and it sounds like you're having so much fun!

Sigh. Skits aren't everyone's bag, and if they aren't your chapter's, I think you should just suck it up and admit it and do something "skit-like" rather than a memorized lines, singing, dancing skit that you feel hideously uncomfortable doing.

Being from a school that doesn't do skits, I have to say that I don't get the point anyway. Does it show your sisterhood, philanthropy, chapter/national values, etc...or does it show that you have (or don't have) a witty sister or two that can write lines and a few that can act and/or sing said lines?

Feel free to carry hijack into another thread, as to not derail this one, if anyone cares to discuss.
