"Sweet Valley: Ten Years Later"

The heavily cliched twins are back in a heavily cliched story. Read the article to the end for an even bigger surprise.

I'm disturbed... and yet intrigued. I admit it.

Can you imagine if they did this with the Babysitters Club? Of course, that would involve them EVER graduating from eighth grade... lol

And poor Jessica. Will they ever write her as anything but a screw-up?

Back in Sweet Valley, Jessica is in the midst of a divorce and apparently has done something unforgivable to her twin, who refuses to speak to her.
So it seems there is this thing...

LatinaAlumna 07-23-2010 04:12 PM

10 years later? Shouldn't it be like 20 years later? :)

I used to love SVH when I was about 13-14 years old. Based on the linked article, I think I'd rather remember the Wakefield twins as high school girls. I'll skip the new book.

I'm pretty sure that they did graduate in the last book. I never got around to reading ALL of them. I wish I had...
ETA: I'm also pretty sure they disbanded the club.

Does that mean Jessi and Mal never got to be full-fledged members? Poor girls. :(

My sister and I were just talking about BSC the other day and wondering how the series ended up. We petered out about... halfway? through. I saw that there ended up being another member - Abby? - but never read any of those. I saw the books in Waldenbooks recently - it seems they're re-releasing them! Including a "prequel" about the summer before the BSC starts.

Yeah, I just got way too excited about a bunch of intermediate books. lol

Drolefille 07-23-2010 04:52 PM

If they brought the BSC back they'd have to all be meeting at Claudia's funeral post tragic death due to uncontrolled diabetes.

Abby was the Jewish twin one (Just like Mary Ann was the shy one, etc.). I honestly don't remember a thing about her personality, just the Jewish twin thing. Also maybe her twin was sick. Or something.

Lol-they were like ELEVEN and babysitting! Really? I have 11 year old sisters that we can barely leave home alone. I can't imagine putting them in charge of my 5 year old cousin! They're CHILDREN. The youngest age to babysit should be 13, and even then not every 13 year old can manage.

I don't think the prequel is new, but I could be wrong. Kids books are big business and they may be trying to get another movie deal. Although you can't top the 1st one with Zelda Harris as Jessi. Or the TV was kinda cute.

BTW, to continue the utter hijack of this thread, I found this blog and it's HILARIOUS: http://www.whatclaudiawore.com/.

nittanygirl 07-23-2010 05:20 PM

I was obsessedddddd with Claudia! Seriously. I wanted to make my own jewelry

I did eventually learn to make jewelry....but definitely not like Claudia's crazy pieces haha

Miriverite 07-23-2010 06:58 PM

Oh god, the BSC! Good times. They just don't make book series like they used to in the 80's/90's.

Ah, yes, she was the saltwater taffy girl, right?

I remember I started buying pieces of saltwater taffy (or some kind of imitation, since I live in CA) because I read about it in the BSC series.

I used my allowance every month on Scholastic orders, just so I could get whatever new BSCs were coming out. Such good times!

BSC & SVH were my pre-teen/young teen favs, and RAMONA books were my favorites when I was in 1st-2nd grade! I heard there is a Ramona Quimby movie coming out soon! :)

BetteDavisEyes 07-23-2010 08:30 PM

I loved both SVH & BSC growing up as well as the Ramona books. Lol! I just flashbacked to my youth.

As for the unforgivable thing Jessica did, I'm guessing she slept with/married Todd (the love of Elizabeth's life) or something idiotic. I wish they'd stop making Jessica such an idiot & Elizabeth so spineless.

Drolefille 07-23-2010 08:44 PM

You know I don't remember the taffy, I just remember she had junk food hidden EVERYWHERE. Stacey was the one with diabetes though, I think.

BetteDavisEyes 07-23-2010 10:39 PM

I'm a total dork that I still can remember all this information without having to look it up. :p

Stacy McGill was the New Yorker with diabets.
Dawn Schafer was the health food nut from California.
Claudia Kishi was the junk-food obsessed artist.
Kristy Thomas was the tomboy leader of the group.
Mary Anne Spier was the shy girl.
Mallory Pike was the redhead who wanted to be an author.
Jessy Ramsey was the ballerina.

Other members:
Logan Bruno was the only male member & Mary Anne's boyfriend. He was also the first one of the BSC to leave the club.
Shannon Kilbourne is Kristy's neighbor & an overachiever.
Abby Stevenson is the twin and is Jewish.

I remember picking up a few Sweet Valley University books after I finished off the series of Sweet Valley High.. weren't bad, maybe I would enjoy it a little bit more now that I'm in university? I just liked the idea of highschool life in those books when I read them in gradeschool.

Also read a few of the "horror" ones from the SVU as well. I can't remember much if I enjoyed them though.

I just wonder if she changes the "perfect size 6" of the twins' to something a little less now with this day and age's ideal of size..

Would love an update on Nancy Drew, she was my favourite - along when she teamed up with the Hardy Boys. I wasn't thrilled with the movie..

Nope. I got the copy of the first chapter and in it, there's so much prose about how stunning and perfect the twins are. There's also lots of mention about Elizabeth's orgasms. No joke.

I actually love reading the re-released ORIGINAL Nancy Drew books. Applewood Press put them out a few years ago. I like them SO much better than the later versions of the same stories (the first 15 or so were re-written in the 1950s). I definitely would not want those books to be re-updated to the 21st century. Plus, aren't there about 500 stories right now. lol

AlphaFrog 07-24-2010 01:29 PM

Further hijack...did anyone else read the Girl Talk series?? I LOVED them!! I was just thinking about them the other day. I read all 45 of them one summer. I think I read each one at least 3 times - more for my favorites.

Yes, I'm a geek.

Agreed, agreed! I LOVE the original Nancy Drews, and I used to check out stacks of them from the library when I was little and read them at bedtime.

Did anyone ever read "The Secret Language"? I can't remember who wrote it but that was another book I loved so much as a little girl.

KDAngel 07-24-2010 04:46 PM

I shamefully remember reading all the SVU books. You could get them new for like a $1 at this store in my hometown. I read them throughout college, each in about an hour. I sadly, loved them. :P

Sister Havana 07-24-2010 06:28 PM

LatinaAlumna: I loved The Secret Language! It was one of my favorite books when I was young.

I am so buying this book when it comes out. I loved Sweet Valley High. :D

Agreed. My mom gave me all of her Nancy Drew books from when she was a young girl! Loved them. Still reread some every now and then.

Splash 07-26-2010 12:11 AM

Jessica was in Theta Alpha Theta sorority lol

IlovemyAKA 07-26-2010 04:44 PM

I liked SVH, BSC, and the Ramona books as a kid, too. There's a Ramona movie hitting theaters soon. I guess I'll go sign up for this chapter.

ASUADPi 07-27-2010 08:07 AM

I read SVH when I was in my teens. The last one I remember reading was about some car accident that the twins were in, I believe Elizabeth was the one driving and Jessica took the blame or something like that.

Loved Nancy Drew and BSC when I was a kid.

Miriverite 07-27-2010 08:22 AM

I loved Ramona as well, though definitely not as much as BSC. I also read the spin-off series BSC Little Sister, about Karen Brewer. There was also some series about horses that I liked... I think it was Pony Pals?

They just don't make book series like they used to =(

When Doves Cry 08-01-2010 08:02 PM

...crazy.
I only read the Sweet Valley books when the twins were in the 2nd Grade and middle school/junior high ... I used to love those books.. I don't think I'll be reading these new adult ones! :)
