Greek TV/Movies

Has anyone else on here seen the sorority episode of Sabrina, The Teenage Witch- The College Years? A re-run of it was on this morning. It was, to say the least, interesting.

Sabrina and one of her roommates (can't remember the character's name, but let's just call her "Katie") were asigned to write an article for the newspaper. They were in competition with other pairs of writers for the best article, so they figured they should get something juicy in order to be printed. As they were talking to their third roommate (played by the actress who plays "Amber" on Clueless) in one of the hallways of their school, she was telling them about her sorority, Mu Pi. They decided they should reveal the "truth" about sororities by rushing. Sabrina was like, "Why would shallow people want to be with other shallow people?" (in assumption, of course, that all sorority girls are shallow) This is one of the parts that made me mad.

Well, the girls went to the first night of rush at Mu Pi, and the first thing said was by an active of Mu Pi: "Thanks to so-and-so for bringing us the delicious, yet oh-so-naughty cinnamon snaps." This, of course, was said as if to imply that all sorority girls are concerned with are superificial things, such as watching their weight.

Next, Sabrina and her fellow-journalist roommate talked to different actives, and they acted ditsy because that's the way they thought the Mu Pis wanted them to act. As it turns out (and I was happy about this part!), the Mu Pis are shocked at the girls were acting when they asked things such as, "Didn't you join so you can find a husband?" The Mu Pis explained things such as, "I'm here for my education, that's what comes first.", "I volunteer feeding the homeless," and "No, I'm not rich, I'm here on scholarship". I totally applauded this more realistic part of the episode. :) Sabrina even commented "now we have nothing to write about...they're great girls, and they do great things!" (yaay!)

Finally, as they are leaving the first day of rush, a girl says, "Well, I hope I'll see you Thursday" (ahem---rush infraction LOL!) and then "We're having a study group". Sabrina: "Oh, that's nice that you can help eachother with your homework". Mu Pi: "We're not doing our homework, we're doing the Seniors' homework. That's what you have to do to get in." So the girls decided to uncover this hazing scandal, but in the end, Sabrina felt bad for exposing them like this, so she wrote good things about them also. Good for Sabrina, LOL! She got rid of the hazing, but didn't diss sorority life in general.

Oh well, just thought this would be something interesting to post. Tell me your thoughts on this and if you've seen another portrayal of sororities/fraternities on TV or movies recently. Also---I appologize in advance if someone has already posted about this episode of Sabrina, but I did a "search" and did not find anything. :)

Thats kinda interesting on how that one turned out. Cause you rarely see a tv show / movie that turns out with a good outlook on greek life.
For instance, (sorry ahead of time I have no clue what this movie is called) But anyway it's about these 2 girls who are freshman at like XYZ University and they want to Rush a particular sorority. So anyway, the one girl and her boyfriend (the girl is played by Hiliary Swank and her boyfriend is played by Zach from saved by the bell) both write for the school paper. He's happy yada yada thats she's going out for Greek Life. Her friend on the other hand it's like a life or death matter to be accepted by XYZ sorority.
The Movie goes on to show the XYZ sorority voting on which prospective will be getting accepted. They automaticially pick the one girl (damn I need names, Suzie will be hers) and then the other girl um beth had to be re voted on and then was choosen due to her lake house which they could throw parties at.

Anyway the movie goes onto show how hazed the new ladies become. The Death of the Girl beth results in a Hazing Scandal covered up orginally by the University. The remaing girl Suzie and her boyfriend get beat up and harrassed by the sorority and the fraternity friends of the sorority.

Eventually the movie goes on till they un-cover the scandal and investigate the girls death and other incidents in the past of XYZ sorority.
I didn't like this movie in the least bit, it really took hazing and the bad effects of greek life to the extremes. don't remeber at all them showing any good signs of greek life and or sororities in general. Kinda sad actually :(
*Does anyone know what this was called?

I think it was called "Dying to Belong"... but I could be wrong.

Dejajeva 11-02-2001 07:13 PM

I remember that movie.
I thought it was candace cameron though that played the main chick. And her friend was the chick from blossom (the girl Six.)

They had movies like that every friday night on NBC.

Hey all,
Actualy you are right about the friend, the friend was the chick from Blossom, but the main girl was Hilary Swank, but candice Cameron plays in one similar, actually a couple similar. One dealing with greek life and then one deaing wiht like domestic violence where her boyfriend beats her up and some other crazy drama. Hey Jess wasn't I talking to you when I was watching that? But both movies are crazy and just sad :( portraits of greek life. Has anyone seen any good Sorority movies?

ZetaLuvBunny 11-03-2001 12:36 AM

I think I remember those movies. Yeah those are awful portrayals. I definitely think that they were probably going to write something bad to start with on Sabrina, but there could have been a Greek alum on the cast/crew who told them that they should highlight the good aspects of Greek Life as well. Oh, speaking of "Zach", does anyone remember seeing the Saved By the Bell: The College Years episode where they all rush? The only thing I remember from that was that the fraternity guys who accepted them came to their (ahem...*LUXURIOUS*) dorm-room and poured slime on Zach and Slater. I think there was something on there also where Screech didn't get a bid at first, but maybe he did later??? Can anyone clarify what went on in this episode if you can remember more? I don't remember if any of the girls rushed...

MoxieGrrl 11-04-2001 03:15 PM

Does anyone remember the "Fresh Prince" episode where Will gets invited join a fraternity but he doesn't want to without Carlton or something?

ZetaLuvBunny 11-04-2001 11:08 PM

I kinda rememeber that but not completely.

kimmykimmy 11-05-2001 06:37 PM

What about the movie "Friends Till The End" with Shannen Doherty. They just showed it on VH1 this weekend. It really was about a psycho girl trying to destroy Shannens life but they were in a sorority.

They showed a candlelight and the voting "process" which isn't how we did it but it was a way to spend a boring weekend afternoon.

XO_Princess 11-05-2001 09:16 PM

Tibi-
I remember that (90210). Seeing re-runs crack me up now. I remember that Andrea was all aphalled that one girl in the sorority was Jewish but wouldn't tell anyone. :)

stephyteague02 11-06-2001 11:50 AM

Fresh Prince

Yeah I totally remember the Fresh Prince episode where Will get accepted and Carlton doesn't. It's kinda sad... like Carlton is the one all excited about joining and then he doesn't get in because he's a dork and Will defends him or something and I think they both get kicked out. I don't completely remember... but I've seen the episode like a million times.

AOPiLaLa 11-06-2001 12:23 PM

Hey KimmyKimmy--I saw that movie this weekend too. Thats not how we do voting, a candlelight, OR sweetheart voting, but it is funny to see. I think I have seen that movie at LEAST 20 times--always a winner on a hungover Sunday. And I think that Donna and Kelly pledged Alpha Omega, but I remember it was always called Alpha House!

ZetaLuvBunny 11-06-2001 06:53 PM

Scream 2

First of all, I just have to say that Jerry O'Connell (Derek) is a HOTTY! Anyway...

In Scream 2, Hallie wants Sidney to pledge Delta Lambda Zeta with her. When Hallie sees some of the DLZs, she says "Hi Sister Lois, hi Sister Murphy." and one of them replies with, "Oh, hello, pledge." At the DLZ house, the sisters tell Sidney, "oh we don't promote giving BJs, but harmonica style is alright, right?" GROSS! LOL.
This just gives a GREAT image for us sorority girls, doesn't it???

Then Cici (Sarah Michelle Gellar) is sitting in her sorority house, Omega Beta Zeta, and she talks on the phone (before she gets killed) to someone about how she's the "sober sister for the Acid Rain Mixer with Phi Lambda Alpha".

Sidney's boyfriend, Derek, is in Omega Kappa Beta, and after serenading her with "I think I love you" from the table tops in the college cafeteria, he lavaliers her. Mickey asks, "isn't that a big frat faux pas?" and Hallie answers, "oh yeah, the brothers are gonna kick is @$$, but it's tradition." LOL This is probably the only realistic portrayal of Greek Life in this movie. I know that at my school, brothers get "treed" (tied to a tree and have stuff thrown at them like rotten eggs, pies, trash, etc) when they give away their lavalier.

Sue_XO 11-07-2001 12:08 PM

I just read in US magazine yesterday- Sabrina's roommate (the one with long brown hair) is the ole Punky Brewster (if ya remember that show).

Dejajeva 11-07-2001 12:22 PM

Solei moon frye, I believe.

And yeah, di, I totally remember that we were talking when you were watching that movie.
crazy.
I never see greek movies anymore.

lol

Jess

ZetaLuvBunny 11-07-2001 01:41 PM

Oh yeah I forgot that's her. I loved Punky Brewster! I used to think I WAS her lol (although I was several years younger than her). A guy at a carnival stand told me that I looked like her one time when I was like 10 or something. lol

GeoffZ 11-08-2001 06:36 PM

This thread so funny, since I've seen all of these Greek shows/movies (except for the Sabrina one). I've seen "Friends till the End" a hundred times or so. About Saved By the Bell, I remember Kelly and Leslie (she was only on the College Years episodes) going through rush also. They were disappointed at first because they didn't get into their first choice sorority but then they were happy because they got their second choice. I forgot how many Greek references were in Scream 2--I need to watch that one again. Have any of you been watching Dawson's lately? Jack got initiated into Sigma Epsilon on last night's epsiode.

ZetaLuvBunny 11-08-2001 08:09 PM

Oh I wanted to see that (Dawson's Creek), but we had a Panhellenic Progressive Dinner last night (it was required), and I forgot to put in a tape to record the show! <smacks herself on the forehead). Dangit! LOL

SoTrue1920 11-08-2001 08:25 PM

Dawson's Creek?

I'll probably embarrass myself by admitting I watch Dawson's Creek, but did anyone see the episode where Jack ws given a bid by "Sigma Epsilon"?

For those not in the know, Jack McPhee is "the token gay character" on DC. He's openly gay, but has had a hard time dealing with what he thinks are stereotypical images of gay men. He was the star of the football team in high school, an excellent student, and basically went out of his way to show just how BUTCH he was.

Well, now the Creekers (except for Pacey) are in college, and Jack starts hanging out with some guys in a fraternity. Of course there was the expected ribbing from his friends, but they supported him in his decision. When it came time for the fraternity to offer Jack a bid, he came out to them. Suprisingly enough, the fraternity members told him that they were under pressure from the administration to diversify, and that they wanted him BECAUSE he's openly gay.

Jack was wary about fulfilling some 'quota' but they told him that there were other openly gay men at the school, but they chose him because he seemed to 'fit better' with the overall identity/feel of the house.

I'm interested in knowing how others felt about this episode. I've only seen the NIC/NPC bid process from the outside, so I can't verify how true to form it was.

I can only speak for my group when I say we have nothing in our book that says, "Ok, you need at least one blonde, brunette, lesbian...". I imagine it isn't that way for other GLO's voting processes either.

However, a founding chapter of a National fraternity is on my campus. Their national officer came in this past summer to re-evaulate their membership because they felt "they had too many football players." This chapter is very well-organized, has a terrific advisor, is financially responsible, has the most members on campus, and are all around nice guys...they do everything by the book. (I know this because our advisor is friends with their advisor, our local priest)

Personally, my favorite quote in that whole movie is "Theres more to sororoties than giving blowjobs"

Great portrayal of sorority girls. really <insert sarcasm here>

The fraternity president didn't say it was the national HQ of the fraternity who was making them 'diversify', but the university administration. Lots of universities have completely disbanded the fraternity system for failure to diversify with regard to race, or for failure to go co-ed.

GILMORE GIRLS

On tonight's episode of Gilmore Girls on the WB, Rory is told she needs to be more social in order to be accepted to Harvard after high school, so she decides to ask a table of girls if she can sit with them, and they say yes. She talks to them for a few minutes until lunch is over, and then her "frenemy", Paris, is like "Oh my gosh, how did you get in with the Puffs?" Then she proceeds to explain that the Puffs are the most elite high school sorority there, and that their table is invitation-only. Paris begs Rory not to say anything bad about her to the Puffs, because she is a legacy to them and she says her "whole life depends on it".

The next day, Rory is asked to sit at the Puff table again, and when she asks "what's the whole sorority deal?" they act as if they don't know, and then say "well what's the point of a secret society if people know about it?" Then Paris walks by the table, and they ask if she knows her. Rory says yes and says all this nice stuff about her that gets Paris invited to sit with them as well.

That evening, Loralie (Rory's mom) tells Rory that she needs to put on her cute pajamas, lipgloss, etc. because Francie (one of the Puffs) called and said they were going to kidnap her. So they kidnapped her, and blindfolded her (along with other girls). Then they are told in order to join, the can't say anything about what they are to do. They break into the school and light a candle in the principle's office. They are told to say an oath while holding the candle, and ring the bell on the desk three times. The principle comes in and yells at all of them when here hears the bell. He gives them detention and such. Rory ends up not joining them and going back to reading a book and listening to her CD player during lunch. Eventually another girl sits with her at her table and reads a book also.

Candace Cameron and Mark Paul-Gossler AND Jenna Van Oy were ALL in a movie called "She Cried No" about a girl who is raped in a fraternity house...thank you www.imdb.com :) it happens to be one of my fav. made for tv movies and is on the same tape as Dying to Belong!!!

ErikaXO 11-13-2001 11:34 PM

Is anybody old enough to remember the "Facts of Life" episodes about sorority life? Tootie was rushing and Natalie was doing a story for the school paper about it and was sneaking around at the parties generally ruining things for Tootie? They had the sorority girls be sooooo shallow and bitchy they made Blair look like an angel!!!!!!! (I also recall something with Blair and the sorority thing too) Of course in the end Tootie realized the "error of her ways" and dropped out to stay friends with Nat.

ZetaLuvBunny 11-14-2001 10:34 AM

I used to watch that show (The Facts of Life) when I was really little (it ended when I was five-and-a-half), and I watched re-runs after that. I don't remember that episode, though. :D I looked it up online, and this was the episode to which you were reffering:

Episode 170 aired January 10, 1987 "The Greek Connection"

Natalie writes an article that angers sorority pledge Tootie.

KillarneyRose 11-14-2001 10:54 AM

There's a place you gotta go for learning all you gotta know.....

I have the Facts of Life theme running through my head. Can't remember the rest of the words. Anyhoo...

I personally would never give Natalie a bid. And it isn't even because of her looks; she was just a totally obnoxious person. I could definitely see Jo as a DZ though; she was cool! :D

Heads up, there's a Facts of Life made-for-tv reunion movie coming up. Jo wan't be there though, totally reinforcing my aforementioned assertation of her general coolness.

Interesting Facts of Life/Tracy Tidbit
I was so inspired by the Facts of Life that I wanted to go to an all girls school and wear a uniform and all that jazz. So I went for one year and couldn't stand it (too many Blairs) and my butt landed back in public school from 8th grade on.

Sing along with me!

There's a place you've got to go for learning
all you want to know about the facts of life
the facts of life.

When books are what you're there about
and looks are what you care about
the time is right,
to learn the facts of life.

When the world never seems
to be living up to your dreams
it's time you started finding out
what everything is all about

When the boys you used to hate you date,
I guess you best investigate
the facts of life you gotta get'em right
the facts of life,
the facts of life,
the facts of life

lol

ErikaXO 11-14-2001 06:35 PM

You guys kill me.....:D But is there something wrong with me? I LOVE Blair....I always did. When I was in elementary school and the show was on the first time around, all the girls (even the ones who were distinctly Blair-like) loved Jo. I was the only Blair girl. But then it was just like the girls at my school to be that way even if it wasn't what they really felt. The "clique" at my school was so pathetically herd-like that, like a bunch of Lemmings, if one had walked off a cliff they all would have!!!!

GeoffZ 11-14-2001 07:12 PM

Erika, there is nothing wrong with you. Blair was always my favorite Facts of Life character. She was the funniest in my opinion. I can't wait to see the FOL reunion movie on Sunday (which sounds extremely dorky). Here's a random FOL fact: Molly Ringwald (pre-Breakfast Club) was on the first season of the show. Her name was Molly on the show too--they got rid of her and 3 other girls after that season and added Jo to the lineup. Just a little FOL FYI.

Also, getting back to the Greek TV/Movie thing does anyone remember the Beta Theta Xi party episode on "Felicity". I think it was either her sophmore or junior year. Anyways, Felicity got drunk while playing strip ping pong. The next day she thought she had hooked up with one of the brothers, but she just passed out. Ben got mad anyways and beat the guy up. Then the whole fraternity retaliated and beat him up.

BrownEyedGirl 11-14-2001 07:19 PM

Blair was always my favorite Facts of Life character, too! I guess that's because I've always been a bit on the prissy side, but she just cracks me up. What channel is the reunion coming on? I might have to make some of my girlies watch it with me...

As for the Felicity episode, I know just what you're talking about. Felicity wakes up in the bed of some fraternity brother (Randy?) and can't remember a thing. Doesn't do much to promote a non-drinking picture of Greeks, but in the end Randy does turn out to be a nice guy and try to patch up things with Ben and Felicity (if I remember correctly).

GeoffZ 11-15-2001 12:08 AM

The Facts of Life Reunion movie comes on this Sunday at 7pm on ABC.

ErikaXO 11-15-2001 09:21 AM

Gotta watch it!!!!! And for those of you who need a Nancy McKeon fix, she is currently appearing on one of those "Lifetime" women's series....some cop show.....don't know the name of it....

I have a confession....years back, my nickname was Blair. :o

AOPiLaLa 11-15-2001 09:52 AM

ERICAXO--My nickname was Blair too! And I had the long blonde, wavy hair to go with it. Now my hair is short and not as blonde, so no more Blair. But she was my favorite. Ahhhhhh---sometimes I miss the days of Facts of Life.

ZetaLuvBunny 11-15-2001 06:50 PM

On Dawson's Creek last night ( you know how Jack had joined Sigma Epsilon or whatever), well he and his brothers and Dawson (yes, innocent little Dawson  ) were chugging pitchers of beer during most of the episode. So basically it's saying that 24/7 all fraternity guys chug beer. I mean, of course, a lot of fraternity guys do drink quite often, but so do a lot of non-fraternity guys. That doesn't mean that that's all they ever do. Dumb stereotyping.
