Recruitment Story Follow Up - The Poll!

Okay, it's time for a poll. For the past three years, we've all made comments on twins, sequined hose, and "this thing". Now it's time to vote. Do you think that there's a kernel of truth to this recruitment thread? Do you want to take a guess at the schools involved, the sororities involved, the number of rush infractions, the Miss America runner-up, where to get sequined hose, or exactly what is "this thing"? Keep it clean so it doesn't get out of control, but...

Please vote and voice your opinion!

ETA: You can vote more than once.

carnation 07-04-2010 01:58 PM

I vote not real! See key*key's posts...same IP.

too many imponderables to be true, but i did want her to post to the end! it was getting more and more outrageous by the minute.

I agree. I just started reading it about a week ago, when it resurfaced, but I want to know the end. Even if it's fake, it makes for a good read and helps procrastinate reading for my classes :p

Benzgirl 07-04-2010 02:20 PM

I didn't see a choice for "Who cares, but I want to read it because I'm peeing my pants in hysterics"

carnation 07-04-2010 02:20 PM

FSUZeta--Too true but she was threatening so many people, both on the boards and off, that we had to cut it short. :( But...she was dragging it out so long that I wondered if she even knew what "the thing" was going to be, lol.

Ugh. This entire story reeks of fiction. It's full of stereotypes and cliches, which may make for good reading, but rarely is anyone - or any two people, let alone family - so "perfect".

Seriously? "Very petite and very blond" cheerleaders (how titillating!) with a gorgeous socialite mother with a law degree she never used, a peach of a dad with the right mix of brains, good looks and charm?

I read this when it first came out. I never found out what the "thing" was, probably because I stopped reading it. Did they ever come back?

Leslie Anne 07-04-2010 03:26 PM

I believe it was pure fiction and funny as hell. At first I thought the "thing" was being a legacy and feeling pressured to join the same sorority. As it went on though the "thing" took on a life of its own. I started to get icky visions of she-males. God only knows what the "thing" really was. It was great for a laugh though.

carnation 07-04-2010 03:33 PM

I have often wondered if a she-male wrote it.

I wish I had thought of that option!

I want to know if sequined hose really exist. Wouldn't they run the nano-second they were put on?

Sister Havana 07-04-2010 03:53 PM

My thought after rereading that thread: "I thought Elizabeth and Jessica Wakefield BOTH went to Sweet Valley University."

Oh yes, they exist.

I'm coming out of lurker-dom to respond to this post because I can't help it! I choose this option! I just wanted to know what the heck everyone was talking about...and when I (attempted) to read it...I was just shaking my head in disbelief. I'm old enough to remember SVT/SVH books and this just sounds like the sequel or something.

And I'm sure sequined tights do exist, but we'd have to ask some exotic dancers to be sure! :p They certainly don't sound like something a society woman's daughters would wear!

ellebud 07-04-2010 04:38 PM

Sequined hose do exist. I saw them at Saks several years ago. Ok, not exactly sequined, but glittery/flecked in a floozy black tie way. You would have to have VERY skinny legs.

I do not know the contest of the sequined hose, but bad taste exists everywhere.

SWTXBelle 07-04-2010 04:59 PM

Okay, the 5 of you who posted you know the school and what "that thing" is - SPILL!

Since you can vote more than once, are there really 5 different people claiming to know?

Good point - OKAY PERSON(S) - if you "know", let's hear it!

Drolefille 07-04-2010 06:23 PM

I'd rather know who really thinks it's true.

WaterChild 07-04-2010 07:25 PM

I doubt it was true, but I remember reading it back when it happened, and I was disappointed when it was put to an end.

I think it was all made up, but I wanted her to finish just so we could see how deep a hole she could dig for herself!

So then, is our repeat Phimu/southern/etc. troll related or someone else entirely. I've been reading old threads and realized that the same person's come back, sometimes as a Phi Mu sometimes not, over and over and over. And I could be wrong, but it doesn't strike me as Beetlejuice based on previous posting habits. *Humble request for IP comparison from mods* (I have several thoughts/ideas about who it is besides the usually assumed but I could totally be wrong)

FTW. SVU would've been a sweet university to matriculate at.

However, IMO, the writing style is reminiscent of a fairly recent (last 90-120 days) poster (under different log-in names). It's just so difficult to disguise your voice; it's why Hemingway and Faulkner and McMurtry and Conroy and LeHane all sound completely different, even if they use the same lexicon at times.

I know! If only that's how my high school and university times actually played out- but I've still got a little time to make it happen!:p

Seriously!!

I meant to use the word "interesting" but used tittilating because I found myself checking former Miss America runners up etc, and found one who was a B-Actress & had a one night stand with a former President. I still think it's false, though.

ucsbgirl 07-05-2010 03:53 AM

I wish I knew more, or at least that the story had been finished and the "thing" revealed.

That girl knew her stuff, though. Something tells me it wasn't just some bored 19-year-old posting for laughs. The stuff about the skiing, the backstory, she'd have to have put a lot of research into it. Maybe a bored 45-year-old posting for laughs, though.

It's funny, someone was talking about the Barnstable twins on the original thread, and I had no idea who they were so I looked them up. One of them goes by "Cyb" (like Syd) and went to the University of Kentucky. Maybe someone was "inspired"... Or probably I'm just bored and thinking too much about it.

carnation 07-05-2010 09:22 AM

Yeah, but the Barnstables (yea Pi Phi!) both went to the same school. So did the Troxell twins at Bama, who were extremely petite but (gasp!) brunette.

I can't remember details about the threats from 'recruitment' anymore but suddenly they got serious. Since the Prunetacos story came out, I've thought that it might have been him because of the Kappa (key*key) connection and it was scary because he had the means to hurt people and was pretty good at tracking down people as well. Whoever the poster was, though, they had done a major flounce or two so who knows if the story would have been finished.

FSUZeta 07-05-2010 09:39 AM

i envisioned the pink sequined tights as stockings with the sequins running up the seam at the back of the leg. most refined.

oooh, barbies_rush, good sleuthing! prunetacos never crossed my mind, but it certainly is feasible.

I know what you're saying but it definitely isn't the same poster. Although they are similarly nonsensical, there are at least three specific style details that mark a certain writers' work. I'm not going to go into any details, but the "recruitment" poster is not the same person who has been responsible for some other recent threads.

The twin recruitment story was 100% fake. NONE of the bountiful details matched up to anything that occured in real life.

Splash 07-05-2010 04:25 PM

It only let me vote once overall. I could vote for multiple options though, but I just put the who cares one.

Ah, indeed, I see. Thanks for picking up what I was trying to say, and thanks for your insight.

Now if we could get another Chuck Norris or Barbie's_Rush to post... I'm just sayin' :p

CluelessIllini 07-05-2010 10:08 PM

i saw a lot of clues that made me feel as if the story was truly just a story-aka fake, rather than a retelling of past events. i'm not trying to be mean here, just stating what i saw and was confused about...

-she could easily explain that she had a twin at another school during rush
-she didnt think about the fact that her twins letters would ruin rush for her, but rather than destroying her rep until a bit later
-highly unlikely that the twins would be co-valedictorians, and if so, why so many spelling and grammatical errors?
-a little new to greek rules, but why would her sister's acceptance into one sorority blackball her from others?
-i thought i read somewhere that infractions included hugging pnm
-she constantly uses pmn instead of pnm
-she claims to be really busy with work, or was that just her sister, can't remember, but why does she continue to read the posts of others and fight back when she claims to dismiss "mean people"

i can't remember everything right now, bad memory... :P, but these are most of the main things i saw
