If you were building a new house, which type house would you prefer?

A. a apartment house with seperate kitchens, baths and living areas for each unit.

B. a single unit house with dorm style bedrooms on the upper floors , commercial kitchen, and a large community room on the first floor.

I'd prefer option B, mainly because it would keep the girls from secluding themselves only in their parts of the house. They would all get to see other for meals and things like that, which builds closeness with each other. :)

If it has to be a new house- I would have it done to recreate the old southern mansions. Big ole columns in front or a huge wrap around porch. So big that people's jaws drop when they enter thru the front door! :) Sue

Sue...I'd do the same thing. Alot of the houses here are built like that since we are in the heart of antebellum home country. I especially love the KA house here it's gorgeous inside and out. As far as house style on the inside goes...I'd pick option B. Just like dzrose said...I wouldnt want girls being able to seperate themselves from the group all the time. There are times when hanging out in a big common room or eating dinner together is really nice.

I think it depends on you campus and what is doing well with the other houses.

My chapter doesn't have a house yet, but we had a wish list that went around, so when we DO get a house, we'll be able to build it according to OUR wants. One really cool idea: a secret chapter room!

I know several sororities that have secret rooms! They are so so cool and you can't even tell they're there unless someone shows you a hidden door!

for a fraternity house i would want a mansion where all of the guys live upstairs, and a big party/chapter room is downstairs. right now we have normal sized house for sdsu. there are bedrooms up stairs and down stairs, and we have a good sized party room and a small chapter room. the school is constructing a new fraternity row right now, all the houses will be VERY SMALL. only a few guys will be able to live in the upstairs of each house, and the downstairs will be party/chapter rooms. behind the houses will be an appartment complex where each fraternity will have a wing of their own.

How big would the secret room be, lol? Hate to have a chapter meeting and everyone get locked in.

It would be terrific to hold all the chapter records, mementos, and initiation stuff instead of having it being held at different alum houses.

When hubby and I were house-hunting, one house had a small secret room behind a bookcase (the bc was not quite shut). The room was neat! Had a window...don't know about cable/pc/internet outlets, lol.;)

I would go with a cross between A and B.

I lived in a dorm that had suites - between 3 and 7 rooms, a common room, a kitchen, and a bathroom. Each floor had about 6 suites, plus there was a floor lounge, and a small apartment for the graduate resident tutors.

People tended to bond with the whole floor, not just their suitemates - mainly because the only TV on the floor was in the floor lounge. :)

This way, you have some privacy, and you have some relatively quiet lounges to study in, but you still have enough of a communal atmosphere that the whole house will bond.

I started a building a new house program 2 years ago and we are finally asking for money and all want to look at the options we have in place!

It is a general concenious of opinion of 2 person rooms and large bathing and ---- combined with individual shower stalls!

Actives live on second floor with a handicap or vip room for visitors on the 1 st floor. A full basement for meetings , eating , with one end with utility and Puter room!

Cost on building is not getting any cheaper so make th best of the space you have as the Govt. does not give a break on donations for house building!

I prefer English Tudor, but every time you make a zig or zag it cost $$$$$$$$

You need plenty of wireing for PC, Phones, TV, sound systems, and sprinckler systems and these ALL COST $$

Look at it real hard and make your plans simple and comfortable, but also non destructive!:)

Option B all the way! It is a fraternity HOUSE, not a fraternity APARTMENT. The house across the street from ours, it is so obvious that it could just be an apartment if they ever got kicked out of the house. That isn't the way it is supposed to be in my opinion. Our house is one of the oldest physical houses on campus (70+ years old) and I love it! It is made of limestone, it's got big pillars in front, and it has a central staircase. Not something you see in houses built today. I like having a house, not an apartment or dorm.

option b! we are actually in the process of looking for/building a house for our new chapter. right now we think we are going to just buy a house already standing in town, because we have a lot of old southern plantation-style homes (watch steel magnolias...it was filmed/set in our school's town...we were actually thinking of buying that actual house). however it works out it will be cool though...i'm sure of it.

Option B sounds great although none of the sororities at our school have houses. Our school does not even acknowledge the fraternity houses that are off-campus and promises to never build any on-campus. Supposedly there is some law in SC that says if five or more non-related females live in house together it is a whore house. Maybe that explains why all the sorority houses in SC are on-campus. Maybe in my next lifetime.

Also check SW Mo State U in Springfeild site. Is a funky way to get to LXA siite. It only shows a picture of the House and some explanations!

Houseing is very expensive to build and once you have plans stick to them! Changes cost you a fortune!!!! Keep us informed and the very best of luck!!!!!!:)

I definitely prefer option "B". I always loved our chapter house at U of Illinois. It was designed from the start as a fraternity house back in the 1920s (they don't build them like that any more!). Tudor, with leaded windows with stained glass crests, and a secret chapter room entered through the back of a closet. Awesome! Unfortunately,on the campus I advise, there are no Greek houses, and the University has no plans to build them either. The community also has kept the zoning from allowing it either.

I would like a house just like ours... a normal large house, with a large chapter room in the basement, with a washer and dryer, and then a normal kitchen, living room and single bathroom, along with 3 double bedrooms, one single... and on the second floor, 5 double bedrooms, one single and a bathroom with 2 showers, 3 sinks and toilets... its lovely! :)
