World Cup 2010

Kind of psyched about it. Who else here is big fans?

I'm surprised theres not already a thread.

pomplemousse12 06-09-2010 10:29 PM

I AM SO EXCITED FOR IT! I would wake up at 9:00 am to watch it at 9:30, but I'm not sure if I want to watch Mexico vs South Africa.
BF, however, just said we are doing so. He's rooting for Germany, I'm rooting for France, and my big is rooting for Ghana (she is from Ghana so it's even cooler for her). I'm hoping France stays in long enough for me to get to France and experience watching games there!

Drolefille 06-09-2010 10:32 PM

Really excited, though I'm not which games I'll be able to catch. I love soccer.

IrishLake 06-09-2010 10:44 PM

Germany, England, USA. :)

Kappamd 06-09-2010 10:45 PM

Super excited!

Elephant Walk 06-09-2010 11:07 PM

Will be up every morning for ever game.

Of course, USA.

Been following the United States for awhile.

ColdInCanada11 06-09-2010 11:14 PM

England! Only predicted to make it to the semi's, but I can dream:)

England, the Chicago Cubs of the World Cup.

Rooting for Spain cause I picked them in the office pool. Odds are the Brazilian or Argentina will win it all.

FORZA ITALIA! Back to Back!

ADqtPiMel 06-10-2010 06:55 PM

I'm super pumped for USA obvi, and I'm a long time fan of Brazil as well.

sigtau305 06-10-2010 07:17 PM

I'm looking forward to the U.S. / England match this saturday. should be a good show. I'm predicting Spain and Brazil will meet in the finals and Brazil, once again, will win it all.

honeychile 06-11-2010 02:12 AM

Am I going to be watching the World Cup?? Did I change my voice mailbox to the "Ole, ole, ole, ole" song because I don't love soccer?

That said, I have a "must do" at 2pm Saturday - does anyone know where I can catch it later?

Drolefille 06-11-2010 02:43 AM

I'm rockin to Wavin' Flag myself :p

ESPN Classic will have every World Cup game at like 7 p.m. on it's station. You'd have to check your listings, but its sometime in the evening.

Drolefille 06-11-2010 03:37 AM

I also just discovered that I can add all of the USA's games (or any team) straight onto my google calendar. Sweet.

AnotherKD 06-11-2010 09:19 AM

I've had the Three Lions song going through my head for days now. I'm a huge England fan (and Chelsea, more specifically, what of it?) and my friends are calling me a traitor for cheering for them tomorrow.

Drolefille 06-11-2010 11:45 AM

My cheap cable package has no sports channel.

Crap.

Shellfish 06-11-2010 12:09 PM

Some weekend matches, like US vs. England tomorrow, are on ABC.

Yeah, and ESPN was streaming the SA/Mexico match and this afternoon's match. I fail at seeing that the USA plays tomorrow and not today AFAIK. *facepalm*

Also I'm enjoying the Vuvuzelas on TV but I think if I were there I'd break them all or run screaming into the night.

pomplemousse12 06-11-2010 03:34 PM

Watching the Uruguay/France game, the Vuvuzelas are driving me CRAZY! If it wasn't for the commentators I'd put it on mute (we don't have closed captioning on our tv).

Drolefille 06-11-2010 03:37 PM

They kind of zone into the background for me after a while.

I would like them to have some way to tell me which team is which when I come in the middle and I can't tell which team's in which jersey.

If I watch long enough I figure it out but I'm needy.

Shellfish 06-11-2010 04:22 PM

Half of my ancestral homelands (and there are a lot) didn't even qualify, and this time I'm not really feeling England. I'm really interested in some of the underdogs, even if they don't really have much of a chance: New Zealand, Slovakia, Slovenia, Honduras, and especially Denmark. Go, Jon Dahl Tomasson!

SLOVENIA?!??!?!?!??!? You do know that they're in our group, don't you?

IrishLake 06-12-2010 02:25 PM

This is so exciting!!!! I want to see the US win... but if not, I'll happily cheer for England the rest of the way!

More exciting than the Olympics!

Drolefille 06-12-2010 04:34 PM

I'll take a draw.

Also screw you Comcast for whatever is messing up your ABC feed. It was like watching TV on dialup.

Thankfully I found streaming: http://www.iraqgoals.net/

FSUZeta 06-12-2010 04:40 PM

woohoo! a tie is a good as a win!!!

FSUZeta 06-12-2010 04:52 PM

touche'!!-oh wait...that's french.

Elephant Walk 06-12-2010 10:20 PM

Hmm yes, the tie today was excellent.

The English will continue to say that America was "lucky" and that it was all their keepers fault, but really... it was a just result of an evenly balanced game.

ColdInCanada11 06-12-2010 10:26 PM

As an England fan, I'm disappointed with the entire team's performance, and the coaching. As if Emile was a starter. And Crouch definitely should've been a starter. Eugh!!

Yeah, that goal was lucky, but it was a very well played game otherwise and purely chance that USA didn't score on one of their other opportunities. On that note, our goalie is amazing.

This however is so much fun

Darn right.

I'm Slovenian and super pumped they won this morning! It was their first world cup win ever!

The game on Friday against the US should be exciting!

I also was excited for the tie against England! That was great.

You're in the clear as long as the US advances with them ;)

But we both could advance to the round of 16. No England--that would be wonderful.

Man, I used to be such an Anglophile, too, but my main forum is an English-based soccer forum. The discussion there is actually pretty intelligent, but the occasional casual anti-Americanism really bugs me.

Yes, please! This is what I'm hoping for. :D

Simply the most boring sport known to man. Totally unwatchable unless you are 3 sheets to the wind.

Sorry, that would be baseball. Where even the commentators have to talk about the pitcher scratching his balls otherwise there's nothing to say.

Once you learn the basics, the beautiful game is incredibly exciting.

To me it's like the difference between watching a football game and knowing nothing beyond "those two teams keep hitting each other and that guy's trying to throw a ball" and watching it and knowing the strategy, how good the line is to keep that pocket open just 2 seconds longer, how the defense is trying to anticipate the next play.

Soccer's like that, just with fewer stops in the action and less padding.
