Florida Gator Recruitment!!!!!!!

Hey everyone, my name is E and I'm going to be a freshman at University of Florida this fall. I'm a direct legacy to one house on campus through my Grandmother, Mom and 2 sisters who were all in this sorority at UF and one of my sisters is still active. Obviously this is my first choice as this sorority has been in my blood since birth, and I've pretty much grown up at the house and know all the girls because of my sisters. Plus it's the best house on campus with an amazing social calendar.

All my ducks are in a row for recs, outfit etc... I can't wait for it to being!!

Well la-di-FRICKIN'-da!!!

Gator*Belle 06-08-2010 10:28 AM

Um Sororities are social organizations, why is it a problem that I want a chapter with a good event calendar that will give me lots of chance to do fun things, bond with sisters, meet guys and get involved in the community. Above all I want sisterhood and to have what the women in my family have gotten from our sorority. But I mean there isn't anything wrong with wanting the house you join to be active and social and fun.

So much for keeping an open mind. Why did you bother to get recs to the other houses? What happens if your legacy chapter (gasp!) drops you? Will you drop out of recruitment?

Although you claim that the sorority has been in your "blood" since birth, there are never any guarantees. Watch them eggs in your basket, sweetie.

KSUViolet06 06-08-2010 10:37 AM

My biggest piece of advice for you at this point:

Keep an open mind during the process to all chapters. Not just your legacy chapters.

Just as you are a legacy to this chapter and you think it's amazIng, I can guarantee that there will be several other direct legacies to said chapter who feel the same way.

Not trying to be Debbie Downer here, but no one is guaranteed a bid (not even a legacy at a school like yours) and it's a good idea to not have your heart set on one group.

lovespink88 06-08-2010 10:38 AM

Of course sororities are social organizations.

But that "top house" "best social calendar" stuff doesn't fly on GC.

I believe the phrase you were looking for was "their sorority." You are not a member.

No, of course there's not. You just don't need to add the arrogant (not to mention highly subjective) opinion that "it's the best house on campus."

lovespink88 06-08-2010 10:55 AM

I missed the "our sorority". Oy.

DrPhil 06-08-2010 11:01 AM

LOL @ our sorority. I blame the family. We had a thread about how some people are raised to believe they essentially are an XYZ.

I have experience with legacies, some of whom wore 'nalia that their family members passed down to them. Some of them were rejected by the chapter on the campus and, if they didn't wait for graduate/alumni/alumnae chapter, joined another GLO.

Humble pie in the eye.

ASTalumna06 06-08-2010 11:10 AM

I definitely caught the OUR sorority thing. And I chuckled.

To the OP... PLEASE realize quickly that you are in no way guaranteed a bid to this house. It could happen, which would be amazing for you, I'm sure. But you also need to be prepared for the "worst" (and I put that in quotes because I'm sure the other chapters on campus are wonderful, too). Trust me, I say this for your own good. Remember that the chapter can always cut you.

.. OR.. you could cut this chapter. It's great that you're interested in this house right now (hopefully for all of the right reasons, and not just because of their social calendar), but remember that you haven't even met any of the sisters yet, outside of your family members, of course. You might find that you get to campus, start recruitment, and you don't click with the chapter that you're a legacy to.

Just PLEASE, whatever you do, don't treat the other chapters poorly because you only want a bid to this one house. I'm not saying that you would, but it has definitely happened... especially when girls are extremely set on one chapter.

Why do I have a feeling that she's saying "thanks! I forgot to put "treat all the other sororities like dog doo" on my checklist!" And meaning it in all seriousness.

Honey, I hope that you aren't as arrogant at rush as you have come across on here. Legacy or not, active sister or not, you don't know the current politics of the chapter.

AZTheta 06-08-2010 11:30 AM

^^^ (re: MysticCat's observation) uh huh. Or ride horses?

ASTalumna06 06-08-2010 11:35 AM

^^ Haha. I would love to see her treat other chapters poorly and find out what happens with that.

And I didn't notice that she had GROWN UP at the house. All the more reason to look at other houses, too, I think. Talk about truly getting your hopes up, only to have them completely crushed if you don't get a bid.

And PLEASE, don't think that saying "our sorority" during recruitment will get you anywhere. It doesn't matter who you are... I guarantee the sisters will have the same reaction that we did.

KSUViolet06 06-08-2010 12:05 PM

I'm willing to bet that her response will be be something in the vein of "you don't know me, you don't know what you're talking about, my mom and sisters have all told me that I'm guaranteed a bid!!!!!!"

If it's not I'll be really surprised.

I didn't catch the "our sorority" party. Technically speaking, it's not yours until you have that bid in your hand hun.

Well, we all have different policies re: depledging.

I can only speak for my own org and say that yes we can.

Gator*Belle 06-08-2010 12:19 PM

I'm not stupid. I know I'm not guaranteed a bid. But as for me not knowing house politics, I know them pretty well from what I've heard from my sisters and all of their friends. Both my sisters had the same view as me going into rush and it worked out for them. All my eggs are not in "one basket" but like applying to college you usually have a favorite. My families house is my top choice and I would be overjoyed to get it. If I don't I'll join another house and make the best of it.

Also I have no intention of treating other chapters poorly I've met and know girls in most chapters on campus I don't think poor about them but I would prefer to go where my legacy is.

Yes, but you'd have to do far worse than be obnoxious and arrogant. Policies may vary.

Then never say "our" or "my sorority" again.

Oh I know that for some NPCs it could require an act of God. But I was just pointing out that nothing is guaranteed, even if you got a bid card.

Haven't we heard almost exactly the same line before??? I forget which troll, but that's awfully familiar.

ASTalumna06 06-08-2010 01:13 PM

^ Yes, and it's true that people usually do have a favorite college when they apply. However, they also accept the fact that they might not get in.

And last time I checked, applying for college doesn't = sorority recruitment.

And to the OP - I'm pretty sure you don't know as much about house politics as you think you do. And I GUARANTEE you don't know how membership selection works (unless someone told you more than they should have).

It's pinging on the "my great grandmother founded the chapter/mom took me to formals with all the other alumnae/I'm guaranteed a bid" side of my radar. But she could still be legit.

baci 06-08-2010 01:41 PM

Best of luck to you Gator*Belle as I am quite familiar with Gator recruitment and sorority life at UF. I do hope it turns out the way you are wishing for yourself.

I would never have gone around in my time saying -- "Plus it's the best house on campus with an amazing social calendar". Yikes! I am not sure what organization you are speaking of, but there are several at UF that truly have amazing social calendars. I know mine did, but to say one organization is the "best" on that campus is pretty tough to do. I would at least say "one of the best" orgs on campus.

In my time, we just kept what we thought to ourselves and between our sisters.

Barbie's_Rush 06-09-2010 02:09 AM

Anyone else remember a couple of years ago when the UF KD mom went in on everyone here because her perfect pretty princess legacy got dropped during recruitment? Ahhh ..... good times.

And yeah, I think "E" came galloping in on the same rainbow colored pony that a certain mustang riding volleyball player was riding.

UFgatorLove 06-09-2010 02:49 AM

OP, Seriously consider all the houses. Suiciding is the most unfortunate thing we deal with in Panhellenic at UF. It tears Pi Chis hearts apart, and a lot of girls who could do amazing things for and in a chapter they didn't originally consider - and its hard to watch year after year. Look at all the other houses and see if you can get letters for those. Letters aren't hard for PC women to do, just ask!

Yeah, good luck, hon.

(Lane swerve)

What a rude thing to say to someone who obviously goes to your intended school, went through a very competitive rush at said school, and was offering advice to help you, a rude PNM, have a successful recruitment.

Wow.

Not only is it someone from the same school, but it seems as though she might be involved with Panhellenic.

Hey genius, if you read what she said (not to mention her username), you'll see that she actually is what you want to be -- a member of a sorority at UF. She just might be a member of "the best house on campus with an amazing social calendar." And if she is (and maybe even if she's not), she probably can pretty easily figure out exactly who you are, "E."

So yeah, either you are stupid -- stupid with an attitude -- or you're a nut-job, mustang-riding, volleyball-playing troll.

So, they are looking for a cocky legacy who "grew up" in one of the "more popular" houses on campus.
