Where to buy a big lavalier?

Hey, I've been with my girlfriend for close to a year now, and I'm planning on lavaliering her once fall semester starts. So I've been looking around online, and all the ones I find are really small. They all appear to be 1/4 inch letters, equalling only 3/4 inch long. That's not very big. I want it to be something she can wear and really enjoy, and not be a little charm on a necklace.

I'm wondering if any of you know of a place that sells larger lavaliers. Like I'm looking for one that is a drop, and each letter is about 1/2-3/4 inch big (1.5-2.5 inch long). For example, for those who watch the show "Greek", I would like a silver lavalier about the size as the ones presented in that show.

Any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated.

What you are looking for sounds awfully big for everyday wear. Have you thought about something like this (if it can be presented to gfs. It calls it a friendship charm): http://www.hjgreek.com/index.cfm?eve...oduct_ID=10527?

It is pretty and unique, not the same ole drop.

While I can't really speak for your girlfriend, since I don't know her, I would say that would be an awfully large necklace for everyday wear. Maybe that's her style, but I would agree with DDDLady on the charm she suggested. It's different and pretty, but not gaudy and overwhelming. Just my two cents and good luck in your search!

I have seen larger versions of traditional lavaliers, but I don't know where to get them either or I'd have one cos the regular ones are too tiny! ETA: Although they are NOT as large as what you are seeking but are definitely more noticeable.

My ex's brother bought his gf his letters in a heart-shaped charm, it was much larger, but not by too much. I think HJ sold it, perhaps something like that will work.

Lavaliers ARE little charms on necklaces. What you're proposting sounds like it would be about as classy as Flavor Flav's clock.

If you want her to sport such a blatant "WOMAN TAKEN KEEP AWAY" symbol, why don't you just brand her on her forehead?

honeychile 06-05-2010 09:31 PM

^ My first thought exactly!

Have you thought of going to a jeweler's shop, and buying a necklace with a heart or whatever on it, and having it engraved? I've yet to find a jeweler who couldn't engrace greek letters.

TheLambdaChiGuy 06-06-2010 04:05 AM

I do not wish to brand her. Let's calm down here. I'm simply looking for something that is larger than 3/4 inch. I mean hell, I might as well glue a stud earring to a chain and call it a necklace.

What I'm looking for is something she can actually wear that won't be microscopic and look really cheap like these little things do. I don't think 1.5-2 inches is that bad.

As for all the suggestions of the hearts and such, good ideas, but I'm really just looking for a verticle drop.

Just a suggestion -- You say you want something that your girlfriend "can wear and really enjoy." Grented, you know your girlfriend, while no one else here does. But it was certainly my experience in college and young adulthood that, when I wanted to get a girlfriend something like jewelry, other women had a better idea of what what she might like to wear than I did. So when (at the least*) 4 out of 5 females who've responded are saying that what you describe sounds "awfully big for everyday wear" and that they cannot imagine wearing anything that big, I think I'd be inclined to pay attention to their opinions.

* One agreed that the standard laveliers are too small, but also said she hadn't seen anything as big as you descibe.

Although they may look "cheap" online, I can assure you that they don't look cheap in person. I have lavaliers of my letters and my fiances, and they don't look cheap...and mine are both silver. Some stores sell them in white or yellow gold, if you're wanting to spend a lot of money or something.

Ditto what MC said. 4 out of 5 (well 5 out of 6 if you include me) are telling you that 1.5-2 inches is pretty big. Also, there's probably a reason why you are not finding lavaliers of that size. No one would want one.

haha!! that is just what i was imagining. how about some matching grills while you're at it?

Titchou 06-06-2010 11:59 AM

Make it 6 out of 7....I'm for the normal size...much more elegant..and tasteful, IMHO....

Drolefille 06-06-2010 12:28 PM

If you were going to go larger, I'd only want one letter or maybe stacked letters? I'm having a hard time envisioning a traditional style lavalier in the size you're describing. Or go with a symbol engraved as someone else suggested.

To be honest, you sound like you're obsessed with the size of the thing. Get her a regular lavalier and some big diamond earrings if you don't want to appear "cheap." Odds are your girlfriend isn't going to think that you gave her a stud earring on a string.

7/8

It's not the size of the boat it's the motion of the ocean :p

It's also not the size of the jewelry it's the intention behind it. The 'typical' lavalier isn't ugly it's just not BIG enough in his eyes.

Exactly. Giving someone a lavaliere sends a pretty big message about the seriousness of your relationship and your intentions for it. I think that should suffice without having to be seen from outer space.

Sorry to throw this in there, but from what I understand a lavalier can be just any charm with the letters on it, is this correct? For example, could he maybe get a crescent charm (for Lambda Chi) and have his letters engraved onto it?

Yeah, he could definitely do that. As long as it wasn't the size of a crescent moon (the actual Moon).

Geez...

I know this thread is kinda old but damn ladies, lay off the guy. I happen to be a Lambda Chi Sweetheart (my daddy is a brother) and I know that personally I've looked for larger size lavaliers. You always see them on the shows and the movies but finding them is really hard. I can't stand how little they always come. I have pride in my sorority and would love letters bigger than 3/4 inch. If I was being lavaliered by a gentlemen of Lambda Chi I would be damn proud to have a larger set. My favorite that I've unfortunately only seen in Scream 2 is the lavalier that Sydney's bf gives to her by singing in the lunch hall. Those are a perfect size. Not super tiny but amazing :) I hope you found what you're looking for Chopper and if you did please let me know so I can find them as well.

Only Mr. T could rock a 2-1/2" long lavalier.

Wow. That's impressive. Are you over 100 years old?
