Ted Koppel's 40 yo son found dead

NEW YORK - The 40-year-old son of former ABC News anchor Ted Koppel was found dead in an apartment in upper Manhattan after a day of bar hopping with a man he met at a watering hole, a law enforcement official said Tuesday.

Hmmm...I sense some foul play even if the official cause of death is alcohol poisoning.

I heard this on the radio this morning.

First thought -- what is a 40-year-old man doing bar hopping?

But I agree about the foul play.

RIP, though.

Isn't it cute how we announce this so it's clear that message boards aren't our first source of info? :p

To some extent, bar hopping and (ocassionally) not drinking in moderation have no age limits but he wasn't smart in the company he kept (he only knew this guy from a straw hat) and how he went about it (i.e. drinking disgusting whiskey and not eating all day).

I always equate bar hopping with "OK, we're downtown. Let's see how many bars we can hit before 2am! Ready...go!" That's always been a "young folks" attitude to me.

But, yeah, at his age, he should know that if he's going to drink like that, he needs to 1) be around people he knows and 2) EAT SOMETHING.

Are you guys seriously that naive??

Bar hopping = cruising, and I doubt he drank enough to kill him.

You don't know how much he drank.

"Bar hopping = cruisin" means nothing. LOL.

I'm saying I think there were illegal drugs involved, rather than just drinking too much. I mean what dude does that? Seriously??

In this case, I think that "bar hopping" is a euphemism for cruising. JMO.

Anything could've been involved and that's why there's an investigation. Thanks for your opinion on what may've been involved. :)

As for what dude does that, there are millions of dudes in the world. I don't know what every dude does or does not do.

That's what I initially thought ("we both had on straw hats") but what I think doesn't make the world go 'round. I also had other initial thoughts. But, I just go based on the article until further notice.

Here's a slightly more detailed article.

It sounds like he had a lot of problems with alcohol, even dating as far back as law school. That bar is not a happening place, and is often teeming with real drunks--not drunk yuppies. It's kind of a down-and-out place. He died 140 blocks away from where they were drinking, in a mostly down-and-out, but slowly gentrifying in some patches, neighborhood.

The saddest part was that he and dude were talking about how much they loved their kids. IF THEY LOVED THE KIDS SO MUCH, THEY SHOULD HAVE BEEN WITH THEM AND NOT DRINKING IN A GROSS HOLE IN THE WALL ON A HOLIDAY WEEKEND.

I was going to say I saw this on Above the Law...this is a lot closer to the version that was posted there, especially about the prior issues with alcohol.
