I've found articles on this from news sources that are large enough to have representatives in Guatemala City and nothing to indicate that it is a fake. They've also had significant size sinkholes before.

The Photo used by much of the news media apparently came from the office of the Guatemalan President.

If this is really a fake, I think that the CIA should really find out who did it and *hire* them...

I've heard of Florida having Sinkholes almost this size across and the rain from Tropical Storm Agatha must be doing *really* ugly things to the water table balance.

It looks fake. If it's real, JESUS BE A FENCE!

As a former geologist... that is the neatest, cleanest, most concentric sinkhole I've seen in my life. Something tells me skynews is about to be made a fool of. I'm sure a sinkhole appeared, but I'd bet a hundred bucks that's a fake photo.

This requires one of those "You divided by zero, didn't you" macros.

I dunno, it's AP Credited and used everywhere. Is it possible that it just looks like a better circle than it is due to the buildings that are overlapping it a bit? Their 2007 sinkhole looked pretty much the same with a bit wavier outside edges.

I obviously watch too much children's television.

I think what's throwing me off the most about the aerial photo of the sinkhole is the black area WAAAAY down in it. It looks too perfect.

I keep checking the news to see if it's found out to be less than legitimate. It does look "too perfect," if that makes sense. Is that dirt on all sides? I wanted to add that water IS very powerful, so you never know...

It looks Photoshopped - poorly. But you never know with Mother Nature. *shrug*

HOW THE HELL does something that massive and DEEP just open up? That's SCARY!!!

Looks like the beginning of a horror movie about aliens or demons coming out of the ground and all the people are standing around like, hmmm what's that?

And then the demons or aliens fly up (or the devil's long arms reach out) and grab unsuspecting idiots who were standing around a sink hole.

I'm sooooooooo shopping my script around to Hollywood execs.

When you get picked up, have them cast me if you don't mind. I could use some extra money about now.

ETA: I'm going to be pissed when the demons/aliens start attacking and I've been wasting all this time on GC and facebook.

It's techically our script and we need to get it copywritten (copyrighted?) asap.

The world shall end and our time on GC is definitely a waste. However, aliens and demons are always among us. Runnnnnn!

Jesus be a really really really really really big fence. :eek: This is heartbreaking but at least no deaths have been reported since it happened (not from the hole anyway).

According to the article, people have been complaining of weak structures and shifting ground since 2005. Now that the hole is open, some say it sounds like there's an underground river down there. Oy vey.

Because you can fix anything with Duct tape! You can suspend someone upside down from a board, you can make a cannon, you can patch a boat (before it gets in the water), you can *make* a sailboat (episode 1), you can stop a car from moving with it, you can *try* (and fail) to stop a moving car with it, you can make a bridge over a 50 foot chasm with it (episode 2).

Why is there no fence around this ridiculously large hole in the ground that inevitably leads to death?

That is my first thought too. This one looks too neat and clean.

Even bigger question: If this happened last week, why does it seem like people are just finding out now? Very few people I talked to today had heard about it and the ones who had just found out in the last day or two.

What about trying the "junk shot" method that BP wanted to use with the oil spill? Just fill the hole with old tires and golf balls and then pave right over it!:D
