HALLELUJAH Bama alums have seen the light

Well some of them..

http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=100740303298921

I am also very happy to see that the AXO national president, a bama alum, is in that group :)

Not to be a Debbie Downer, but:

A Facebook group does not a campus culture change nor diversity make.

It's a very nice sentiment, but that's really all it is. There's no real action behind it.

33girl 05-30-2010 10:28 PM

Umm, so what?

Alumni don't vote on bids, active members do. Even if the actives would have planned on following this course, people shoving it down their throats is more likely than anything to make them say "screw you, we'll do what we want."

It's also really easy to join a facebook group and let it end there. I seriously doubt any alums are going to call up and give a lecture to their chapter for not bidding in a "diverse" fashion if the chapter is still in good shape.

GAgalBamabound 05-30-2010 10:29 PM

I don't even go to bama anymore. I was outta there after 1st semester with a lot of other people for various reasons. It was just nice/interesting to see alumnae reflecting back on that touchy subject.

jeeze.

KSUViolet06 05-30-2010 10:31 PM

There is no way alumnae can force a chapter to become more "diverse."

Sure, if high-powered donors threaten to pull the plug on money/donations, it might put some pressure on them to do it. But then they'd just be doing it to placate the alumnae. Not because they truly care about "diversity."

GAgalBamabound 05-30-2010 10:39 PM

"We are alumni of the Greek System at the University of Alabama who think fraternities and sororities should voluntarily admit their friends of different races, orientations and religious beliefs. While openness and inclusion was not the practice while we were in school, we now realize the world does not end when you open your heart and social life to all of friends. Inclusiveness is not a bad thing. Diversity is a good thing.

We are not about forcing or shaming anybody into joining this group. But if you believe as we do that your old house should invite ALL of their friends - Black, White, Jew, Gentile, Gay or Straight - let them know it.

When you join, please list the year you JOINED your fraternity or sorority - or keep it to yourself. So join if you want, don't if you don't"

Clearly says this group is not about forcing, just alumnae reflecting. Let them have their moment ,clearly 300 other people feel the same way the original creator does.

Some GCers might be interested in this. You might not be. Maybe I'll be the only person interested in this ( most likely not ), but as a member of this forum I am free to post anything appropriate. This is rather appropriate and related to Greek Life.

What on Earth are you talking about?

Yes, you're allowed to post whatever you choose.

And we are free to comment on it or discuss it as we see fit.

Hence the name, GreekCHAT.

It's not Greek"I post something and everyone says nice things about it."

And we as members are free to respond to any posts. The point of a forum is to engage in (reasonably) intellectual discussion. Why would you post something here and get pissed when people comment on it?

ETA: KSU beat me to it and was way funnier :-)

SusySorostitute 05-30-2010 10:45 PM

10,000+ ?? looks like as of now you are only at 304

GAgalBamabound 05-30-2010 10:46 PM

I guess I'm more of a "If you don't have anything nice to say..." person. But you are very right, I'm sorry. Have fun yall!

And Sorostitute , I believe 10,000 is the goal, and that's not my group.

KSUViolet06 05-30-2010 10:49 PM

I can give you the answer you were looking for:

OMG that is soooo wonderful.

Now because of this one facebook group, NPC recruitment at Bama will become a veritable cornucopia of different races and such holding hands and singing kumbaya!

YAY.

That better?

GAgalBamabound 05-30-2010 10:50 PM

Nah, 10 years-ish maximum is more reasonable. That is, if the world doesn't end :P

33girl 05-30-2010 10:53 PM

Fun and goofy facebook groups are one thing. I don't in general (not just in this instance) believe in the ones that are purporting to make a change when all that's getting done is people are clicking a button.

And yeah, the "10,000+" title is ridiculous.

Nah, just a little embarrassed for a fellow sister. (I transferred from Bama...I know they don't have SK there)

See yall...be back around rush season...with my more fitting new screen name...member name?..whatever it's called

Aw, cute. Don't trouble yourself on my behalf, if I were ashamed of it, I wouldn't do it. Feel free to actually introduce yourself in the SK forum. That works better than you trying to throw it out as some sort of smackdown.

KSUViolet06 05-30-2010 11:32 PM

^^^I know, right? lol @ being an SK and trying to be smug and ridic about it.

Sounds a tad perpalicious.

I'll gladly apologize if proven wrong.

I thought the picture was appropriate. Although, us maniacal squirrels pretty much do whatever the heck we want, within the boundaries of law.Kinda.

And while I don't automatically doubt, there was a complete lack of mention of transferring/rushing/joining ANY sorority in her posts after "going to Rush at Bama" came up. So, ID yourself, THEN try to lay a smackdown. You'll still fail at the smackdown, but at least I'll respect the attempt.

(And the way you wrote that makes it sound like you're dissing SK, but I know you love us :p)

That's not how I meant it. I mean, why mention your membership in such a smug manner? Most of us have no problem with ID-ing ourselves in our forums if we're going to call others "sister."

Unless of course you're perpalicious. lol.

Oh I know, I was just giving you a hard time. And with the 'flounce' (doesn't even deserve that name) she avoids having to prove it until she 'comes back' as anyone else in the whole wide world.

I'm not sure how the they are to become more diverse when the PNM pool isn't (speaking on the NPC side)....

Magic?

It's all a product of the general attitude of the populace. Maybe as more out of state people (and I mean from the North) come in, more diverse women will go through recruitment, but as it now stands, this is a problem across the south.

I think the dude who created it either just 1) came out of the closet or 2) started dating a nonwhite woman and is having his own little midlife crisis version of neoism. Silly baby boomers. It's not really about anyone else, it's about them.

How will "out of state people" bring diversity?

The emphasis on "diversity" is to throw away standards and become blinded by color (or religion, or sexual standards, or what have you). Disregarding that diversity is a completely meaningless and retarded term, the chapters will begin pledging people from different backgrounds when people from different backgrounds match the chapters standards and interests.

You're arguing from a kneejerk reaction to the word "diversity" without paying attention to what she actually said. There's no way for a chapter to know if people from different backgrounds match the chapter's standards and interest unless those people come out for recruitment. She didn't say anything about changing pledging standards to achieve any kind of diversity. She simply said:

In other words, maybe the chapters will get more opportunities to see what women from different backgrounds match (or don't match) their standards and interests.

Meanwhile, your use of the word "retarded" drops your credibility significantly.

I wasn't referring to her.

That's why it's one sentence in response to what she said, and two lines down, what I felt about diversity.

That would be YOUR kneejerk reaction to what I said.

IDK. To some, "out of state" = national origin.

I think it's also the idea that people who come from outside of the culture of these campuses will have different views and in this case possibly be more open to/encouraging of diversity within their chapters. Personally I think for that to happen from the outside would require either some big huge transitional event or for all southerners to stop joining GLOs, otherwise the majority is always going to be from within the campus culture.

My 2 cents.

Way to encourage people to join your group.

I took it to mean that she became a member after transferring schools.

However, the way she brought it up so smugly, I'm not buying it. lol.
