Senior Year??

This Fall 2010 will start my final year at college. I'm 25, and I wish I would have been more involved. I did Student Government and a few things like that. Is it too late to go through fall recruitment??

Do you think I would actually get a bid??

99 times out of 100, Yes.

Well, you can go through recruitment, but that's not really the point.

It's not too late to go through recruitment.

Whether or not you receive a bid is an entirely different issue.

I simply want to meet people, become more involved, have lifelong friends, and do good work. A sorority seems to be my best option.

You are certainly allowed to participate in recruitment.

We can't say whether you'll get a bid or not.

In most cases, a senior graduating in May is at a severe disadvantage.

I know that at my school, I never saw a graduating senior get a bid.

The only senior I ever saw get a bid was a transfer student who wasn't graduating right away.

This senior also knew alot of people within our greek system as well.

Look into social and service organizations that are not tied to a school system. As a senior a collegiate sorority is probably not your 'best option.'

If you go to Sparsely Populated State University, East Bufu campus, you might have a chance.

it can happen that you would receive a bid, but the odds are against that happening. that being said, a senior did receive a bid at my daughters schools last formal recruitment . that school has a pretty competitive recruitment. when i mentioned to my daughter that i was surprised that patty pnm got a bid from abc sorority she just rolled her eyes and said,"i was really surprised that she rushed and that someone bid her. nothing against the girl, but she is a senior."

of course, i think that your age will be the biggest burden, but you certainly won't get a bid if you don't rush.

There are also community based sororities you may look into - other GC members know more about them than I do (since right now I can't remember the name of the bigger one - it's after 5 and I'm still at work, apologies).

Beta Sigma Phi?

You're also 25, that's 4 years older than the average college senior. You're 7-8 years older than the average freshman/sorority new member.

What? You don't think a bunch of 18 year old freshmen would love hanging out with a 25 year old senior?

KSUViolet06 05-25-2010 07:08 PM

Cue post about how she's 25 but can still relate to 18-year-olds.

I'm 25 and a sorority volunteer, and I'll admit that sometimes I have a hard time relating to college-aged girls sometimes. lol.

In all seriousness, the OP needs to look at the sororities at her school. Are there non-traditional students in sororities? This is the best indicator as to whether she has a chance.

A few years ago we had a 29 year old PNM (I think she might have been married too) join Gamma Phi Beta at Wisconsin-Oshkosh. I think she was a junior though. She was otherwise a good candidate. Chapters there have some non-traditional students.

If you want to go through fall recruitment, do it. Just realize that the odds of receiving a bid will probably not be all that great due to your class standing and age.

Have a good, positive answer ready about why you're going through recruitment at this late stage. What do you hope to gain? (...as opposed to negatives about why you didn't do this before.) How can you hit the ground running to help your potential GLO?

Enjoy it. Don't worry about things that are beyond your control. Realize that each GLO -- even if you don't feel a strong connection -- offers a tremendous opportunity, not only now, but in the future.

If it doesn't work out, check out community sororities such as Beta Sigma Phi.
