You Don't Need No Stinkin' College Degree!!

Success without a college degree. It is possible and here are some people who accomplished it (at face value). :)

The irony is that the only nonwhite person (there was J-Lo, but that's a different topic) that they showcased is...wait for it...TRACY DAMN MORGAN. Yeah.

This is a reminder that A) if you're nonwhite, your best bet is to get the college degree so you can get a head start on a more leveled playing field; B) for everyone, the chances of success are greater with a college degree to avoid the basic probability of risking being a failure at life; and C) we don't know how many toilets these people had to scrub to be taken seriously, although white male privilege (among other privileges) often works without a college degree. But, most of us knew that already. :)

r**e war.

^^^ Fixed.

AOII Angel 05-25-2010 09:23 AM

This has to be the most irresponsible article considering that the unemployment rate has proven the usefulness of a college degree. Even white males without a college degree are feeling the pinch as they collect their unemployment as women with college degrees continues to take all the jobs with their higher education. The pie in the sky stories are just that and shouldn't be lauded as "do it yourself" pieces.

I was absolutely shocked when I read this article. There's a thin line between just reporting the...facts and presenting a "why waste time at college" tone.

DaemonSeid 05-25-2010 09:27 AM

Wait...theer were facts in there?

Fixed that for you.

Yes, there were...facts in that article.

SydneyK 05-25-2010 09:35 AM

I didn't see an article anywhere - just pictures with tidbits of info next to them. Was there an article and I missed it? I tried clicking on something that looked like it could be an article, but it just linked me to a search result. ??

In your mind, vertically position the paragraphs beside each photo and you will have an article. :)

SydneyK 05-25-2010 09:38 AM

Hmm. That just doesn't seem like an article to me.

<Yawn> 3-2-1 --Mad Max will be here, shortly.

DrPhil 05-25-2010 09:58 AM

And if people actually contribute to the thread, madmax won't pose a distraction.

AOII Angel 05-25-2010 10:20 AM

Apparently if you were born before you had to go to law school to be a lawyer, can invent a computer related item, are a very lucky actor or comedian or were born with a silver spoon in your mouth, you don't have to worry about going to college.

agzg 05-25-2010 10:26 AM

You know, Ice T was talking about this on Wait Wait Don't Tell Me. He said people should be squares and get an education, that not everyone ends up like him.

And if Ice T says it, I do it, basically.

LOL. It took Ice-T a long time to become the cool actor in New Jack City and L&O SVU.

That's what he said. Actually, he said "a lot of these cats think they're taking a shortcut but they end up taking a detour through the penitentiary."

True. Surviving the Game was the first time I really noticed him (as an actor).

Now, now, Ice-T, don't act all brand new. Some us remember when you had your gorgeous ex-wife posing in a skimpy bikini with guns.

I try to tell these kids that most of these rappers are actors. They aren't REALLY doing what Tupac, Ice-T, NWA, etc. claimed they were doing. That's why I still love the rappers and emcees who never faked the funk. Rakim was just a weed-head lyricist, LL Cool J was just a lady lovin' lyricist, I could go on and on. :)

PiKA2001 05-25-2010 10:52 AM

I don't really see what the big deal is about this article, a lot of people trying to make it out in Hollywood don't have college degrees to begin with and I didn't get the "don't even bother with college" vibe from this slideshow.

Then you're in the right thread.

DrPhil 05-25-2010 11:18 AM

What next?!

Miley Cyrus ANNOUNCES (that's the part that gets me about all of this) that she's not going to college yet.

http://wonderwall.msn.com/music/mile...tory?gt1=28135

 OMG, WHAT WILL WE TELL THE KIDS?! :p

On another note, she looks like she's had the Hilary Duff and Lindsay Lohan surgery. Or she's coming into her looks, but it's probably surgery assisted and not a natural progression.

Do you blame her? You have to strike the iron while it's hot ( I think) and four years away from the public eye can end a career in Hollywoodland.

Point of the article, it's not about WHAT you know it's about WHO you know.

[Didn't read the article, so I'm not sure if she was talking about the "traditional" college experience]

There's nothing that says she can't take online courses or work out an arrangement with a university. Just like many other folks, she could juggle work and school if she really wanted to.

I think she says something about going 'back' to school later. I know Julia Stiles in particular attended school but she also dropped out of the acting world a bit while she did. It's not impossible but it's not ridiculous what Miley Cyrus is doing now either, assuming her money is being managed responsibly.

LOL. She made reference to her grandma going to school at 62. Yeah, Miley!

Yeah....that's right. Having money will always matter more than having a degree. The degree is what people use to get money.

None of this is just about money.

I wonder how much of it comes down to how much stock, regardless of fame or money, your family puts in a college education. I can't really see any child of Billy Ray Cyrus, especially one as trainwrecky as Miley has been, going to college at all, let alone "later."

While that's true in general I don't know enough about their family to judge.
But her image is what makes her money. It makes a lot of immediate sense for her to postpone college. It makes more sense for an actor to attend school particularly if they're going to be doing theater in addition to TV/comedy/etc.

I don't know, I don't really judge famous people for whether they go to school. And I think all this article showed was that if you get lucky you can make it without a degree, particularly in Hollywood.
