Sex and the City 2

I saw the thread for the first movie and didn't see a new thread. Pardon me if it already exists...and I'm the one who created it.

Okay, the countdown is on and I'm so excited. :D My friends and I are planning a grown "ladies' night out." And, yes, men who are secure in their masculinity will also be seeing this movie. :)

It's a celebration, beyotches!

BabyPiNK_FL 05-21-2010 01:58 PM

Okay, so I just heard the Liza Minelli version of "Single Ladies" set to appear in the film but if anyone has any decency for the elderly, not the soundtrack. Perez just posted it and it is AWFUL! OMG what were they thinking? She sounds like she can't breathe and is fighting the song word for word. I respect her work (mostly because I love her mother, I'm not particularly a fan of hers) but this is not acceptable.

Munchkin03 05-21-2010 02:02 PM

Oh, I can't wait for this movie, and I'm not ashamed to say it.

I'm a Charlotte! :eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

I love Mario Cantone. I saw him on Rachel Ray and The View. He is a trip. I'm excited that he's getting married in the movie and I think that's where Liza Minelli's "Single Ladies" comes in.

ISUKappa 05-21-2010 04:39 PM

I went to the first movie by myself when my husband was out of town with our son. I'll probably do the same for this. It's times like these I really wish I had a posse of female friends in my area with whom to do fun stuff.

SJP was on Bravo last night and there was a clip about his wedding registry. A most unlikely pair.

ASUADPi 05-21-2010 09:58 PM

So excited for this movie!

According to sources she is going to be the wedding officiant and perform as well. The song has got me losing it.

Other than that, I really hope that Carrie doesn't try anything with Aiden. He all but forced her to try to marry him, once in the street, simply because he thought he loved her and she was in a white dress and he in a tuxedo! I call tomfoolery. She waited ten years for the man she wanted (which was also a joke in my book cos he was playing mind games too), finally got him, and if she even so much as plays around like she doesn't anymore my tongue will be clucking away in a movie theater come the 27th...

I agree. :D But, as SJP said in the interview that I posted (I think it's the one in the OP), Carrie loooooooooves drama.

Carrie and Aiden seemed way too happy to see each other. She waited for Bigg for TEN YEARS (as Charlotte would say with all fingers in the air) and it's nothing but a desire for drama that would make her even flirt with Aiden. I can't wait. :D

DrPhil 05-27-2010 07:06 PM

I just saw it. I liked it. I liked part 1 more because "less is more."

It was definitely a 2.5 hour infomercial. There are scenes that could've been left on the cutting room floor. There were attempts at funny that weren't as funny as the actress laughter symbolized.

Scheduling conflicts made my friends and me have to see the movie separately. Same day, different theaters. We'll have to see it together to get the group effect. :D

I will buy the dvd, but it probably won't be all worn and overwatched like my part 1 dvd. I also probably won't stalk it on HBO OnDemand like I stalk part 1.

BabyPiNK_FL 05-27-2010 09:13 PM

I have to wait until tomorrow to accomodate my friend b/c she doesn't work tomorrow but did work today. Last time we saw it at 12am day of. But this time it's the movie theater that serves food and alcohol, so dinner during movie instead of dinner THEN movie. YAY!

I know in my heart that this isn't going to be "as good" because of all I hear. Soo sad. :( I think the first one is my favorite movie. I could watch it any kind of way (even w/ director's commentary) and still not get enough.

Yeah. :)

Part 2 is getting slammed by at least one critic that I read. The stuff the critic said wasn't necessarily wrong, but I still was like .

Now, there are things that only true SATC fans can appreciate. Unlike other movies, the SATC people didn't cater parts 1 and 2 to nonfans who are unfamiliar with it all. You either like SATC or you don't. You either like these characters or you don't. You either like their...humor or you don't. The humor fell short in the sequel but I think that was because they were trying to do too much with the "plot." Notice the quotations. LOL.

THIS.

I love SATC, and I really enjoyed the first movie. I liked this movie okay, but all the main characters (except maybe for Carrie) seemed like caricatures of themselves. I would definitely not go see it again in the movie theater, though I will likely rent it, at least to see all the extras. But I don't think I'd even buy this movie - it just really didn't feel the same to me. :(

DrPhil 06-03-2010 07:43 PM

I'm clearly disappointed in this sequel and my friends and I have agreed to pretend as though it didn't happen. We are only acknowledging the series and the first movie. The End.

This is the best article I've read about this movie so far:

BabyPiNK_FL 06-03-2010 08:21 PM

It was like watching a special episode of your favorite TV show like Real World or ANTM where there is a big trip every year. It was like-oh we're going somewhere for no purpose to do nothing really and stuf'll happen there.

Carrie-bitch about your husband b/c he's cold even though you knew that b/c he kept doing this for 10 years and stood you up at your wedding. Now do something that wouldn't break up a relationship at all in most cases and cause some drama over it b/c you're stupid.

Charlotte-Bake in a vintage outfit and then bitch because your pretty daughter ruined it and your ugly baby won't shut up. Don't even worry about that nanny. She's good at her job.

Samantha- You've slept with every man in the U.S. so let's go somewhere where sex is bad and then you sleep with someone there, got it? Good.

Miranda - Um... we gotta find something for you to do...Hold on.

It would've been fun with another cast as the female version of The Hangover or something. But with classic beloved characters who had previously developed aim and purpose it fell flat. SPK should've taken this script and done something cute with like Taraji Henson, Penelope Cruz, Sandra Bullock, and Lucy Liu (cos we need one from every general ethnicity) and just made a new female dominated series-potential film.

DrPhil 06-03-2010 08:52 PM

BabyPinkFL wins.

I can't believe I claimed to like this movie on 5/27 (opening day). DeNile is more than just a river in Egypt.

dang I guess I am the only one who liked it hahaha! I admit it was not as good as the first movie but I seriously love those girls and will watch anything with them in it. Definitely going to buy the DVD too!

Oh, I don't doubt that it was a good film. It was cute, beautiful, hysterical, etc. My main point is that it was so detached that it shouldn't have even have been a SATC film. It would've been more suited to stars outside of the franchise, but staying within the same themes of fashion and excess and glamour.

"I curse the day you were born!"

Sure, Aidan was always nicer, always treated her better, and proposed to her before the 10 year mark. :p But, Mr. Big was elusive and evasive--he had that THING (other than the money and the power) that made Carrie want more. I remember when Carrie first saw Mr. Big at that party and Samantha was trying to screw him. He was a sexy cutie to me.

Okay...yeah...I just love me some Chris Noth. :o

Yes, and I will take the bolded any day over Mr. "Hard-to-Get." I do, however, think that he was stupid for walking away just because she did not want to get married. I mean, she didn't even really rush to marry Big. Until the whole buying a home thing came up, it doesn't seem that she was thinking too hard about marriage at all.

33girl 06-08-2010 10:18 PM

Aiden was the classic too-nice guy. She would have ended up walking all over him and been miserable.

That being said, I saw the movie and considering what I've been missing more than anything is just that cozy stay at home feeling, and I didn't even have it WITH A GUY WHO LOOKS LIKE CHRIS NOTH, Carrie gets a big eff off.

Agreed completely! And Aidan was too homey for her, he had this outdoors-y vibe to him which was a huge contrast to Carrie's high fashion and high maintenance attitude. They didn't make a good couple IMO...

Man I am so ready for SATC 3 already!! Hahaha. I guess I'll have to just re watch all the old seasons instead :)

BabyPiNK_FL 06-09-2010 12:29 AM

Everyone always sees Aiden as nice. And while I agree he was nice because it WAS very VERY difficult to love and trust her at times, I find him to be deceptive, selfish, manipulative, and self-serving.

This was their relationship in MY eyes: I hate smoking. Love my nature. Cheating? Torture. Marry me Carrie. Right now. No? Okay bye. Hey. Marry me Carrie. Now. No? Okay bye. Here I am like two years later loving life with the woman who was willing to marry me on short notice and have a baby. Yeah I wanted you, but she'll do in a pinch. I'd have married a dog to get married.

He was just always jumping into this and that and too conflicting with Carrie as a person. I knew that they were never going to work from day 1. He and his needs never properly fit into her life.

33girl 06-09-2010 11:13 AM

I think though that JC did a good job of playing Aiden as...I don't even know how to say it...like he didn't realize he was doing all that or that he was manipulating. Like he was just a 10 year old kid and following whatever popped into his head at the time.

Seeing as I know someone who's moving multiple states away and shacking up with a girl he until recently hadn't seen for 20+ years (after he was all up in my grill for a minute - I guess I didn't confess my undying love fast enough), yeah, I can relate to the type.

DrPhil 06-09-2010 11:29 AM

I love this thread. Here's my input:

1. If they do a SATC3, I will see it only because I am a member of the SATC fan club (or cult). I'm bothered by SATC2 but will like it more if I take BabyPink's advice and pretend it isn't really SATC but just random actresses.

2. I never liked Aidan. Never. I never found him cute. I never thought his niceness matched Carrie's personality and behaviors. I really think that Carrie needed John J. Preston (I just wanted to show off that I remember his real name :p) to humble her and teach her that she isn't the hottest. His model wife who broke her teeth was hotter although she lacked the Carrie personality.

3. I liked Aidan more than the French artist Carrie dated right before she got slapped and ran into Big in Paris and he said "you're the one." I like the actor (dancer) who played the character, but hated the character. It was so random.

4. SJP is wonderful. I always thought that she's cool as Carrie and beyond her role as Carrie--eversince that old movie where she played a crackhead mom. In fact, I like all of the SATC characters and all of the lead actors and actress. Random confession, I know. :)

Munchkin03 06-09-2010 01:51 PM

Okay, I saw the movie with girlfriends (yay!) Sunday afternoon. We were all looking at each other like, WTF? afterwards. Here goes:

1. I liked how they glammed Miranda up. She needed it! Charlotte is always and forever my favorite. Samantha needs to learn her lesson, and almost did a few times. Carrie I always want to slap because she loves the drama too much.

2. I can't see watching this movie ever again. I want to forget it ever happened. It was a bad dream. Now, it has made me nostalgic for the series AND the First Movie.

3. The gals all looked old. SO old. Cynthia Nixon probably looked the least plastic. SJP looked the most haggard of all. The guys all looked great. I LOVE Chris Noth so I would go to a movie that involved him watching paint dry.

4. Stanny would NOT have married that annoying brat Anthony! If he was THAT desperate for a wedding, he would have married, as he said, "a chubby patient girl."

The reviews were SO tough on the movie. I DO NOT want to watch movies about the recession! I'd rather watch something like this movie, where the characters are living large and being unapologetic about it. Also, I think a lot of the review writers didn't know about the NYC reality: I'm hardly in their world and I know plenty of SAHMs who have help AND I know couples where one person has kept their pre-marriage apartment, either as an office or (in Carrie's case) because the economy tanked and it wasn't the best time to sell. I feel like the critics should have focused on the fact that the movie just wasn't well-written, instead of how it was an "unrealistic view of life in this economy." Gag me with a Louboutin.

DrPhil 06-09-2010 01:54 PM

Hey...wasn't that artist guy Russian and not French? I could be wrong but, I am 100% with you on the fact that I wasn't feeling him as much, either.

I have to say that I loved Aidan. It is true, though, that he wasn't for Carrie. Their worlds collided and they were not a good fit. I'm waiting to see a movie where "Big" cheats on Carrie because "what goes around, comes around" and "karma is a bitch" because "once a cheater, always a cheater" in the minds of many people. You expect me to believe "Big" cheated on his beautiful, educated and successful twenty-something wife to be with a woman in her 40's who (while still beautiful) doesn't have two dimes to rub together? It isn't the age thing but, men that look like that, have that kind of money and so much appeal don't realistically date women THEIR OWN AGE. I'm sorry-I disagree (for the most part).

I'm waiting for "Big" to cheat on Carrie with some twenty-something NYC model who is able to have little baby Bigs running around their tiny apartment as he busts his ass on Wall Street.

LOL. I had originally put Russian and called myself correcting myself. :) He was Russian in Paris. Thanks. I now remember that Carrie wanted her body massager (or body waxer) to teach her some Russian words.

Big has done enough dirt.

Munchkin03 06-09-2010 03:27 PM

Alexsandr Petrovsky! I still can't believe she went to Paris with dude...he was even more disengaged than Big. I was not surprised at all that he left her to fend for herself in Paris; didn't his ex-wife say the same thing?

I didn't like Jack Berger. Two writers in a relationship is two many. Funny that a writer left a break-up Post-it!

I love that Charlotte is happy with Harry and the girls. She saw past the fact that he wasn't "traditionally" attractive, and followed her heart--and converted! (That's especially on my mind these days.)

I just can't believe she went to Paris. She was really dumb.

The episode that pissed me off the most was when she stiffed her fans at the coffee shop to attend his gallery opening. He left her and she "found herself" by finding her "Carrie" necklace.

I love how Big had come to Paris (to look for her, right?) and found her with perfect timing.

I never saw what Berger had to offer. He couldn't handle her success or anything else. LOL @ the Post-it. I was floored when that happens but it makes so much sense.

Harry is very cute to me. :) I could do without the body hair and want him to do some toning exercises---but, his face and personality are adorable.

I think Charlotte went about Judaism the wrong way (what she did isn't rare because it happens a lot, I just don't agree with it). I never believed in conversion when it is based on a love interest. I believe that people should be equally yolked and that sets the context for who they date. For me, faith is about faith and not about a man. I believe in following the faith and finding the man. There are plenty of men in every religion/faith. I don't believe in following the man and finding the faith.

Little32 06-09-2010 04:45 PM

To jump back in:

First, in comparison to what Big put her through, Aidan was child's play. I have been watching season four over the last couple of days, and I read Aidan's behavior as more of him trying to do something that he wasn't wired to do--forgive this woman for breaking his heart so that he could be with her--than him deliberately trying to punish or hurt Carrie. I think that as a character he is genuinely a nice guy who deeply loved a woman but could not accept that those things that he loved about her were the very things that meant that she was not going to fit into some traditional, rigid notion of what love looks like.

But you all are right, Big was what she wanted. He gave her the drama that she craved. So it does make sense that he would be the one that she was drawn to. However, given the way that their relationship has played out--in the series and the movies (which was plausible up until this movie)--I still can't say that it was necessarily a good thing.

/sidebar: Actually, as frequently as I have watched the series, I am much less forgiving of the characters. Samantha is the only one who really holds up as sane, after a lot of scrutiny. Charlotte next. Miranda and Carrie are completely nuts. sidebar/

Ultimately, I think that if she and Aidan had stayed together, Carrie would have been better for it. Yes, she is a city girl at heart who craves drama, but I think that Aidan mellowed her--and she needed mellowing (because did I mention she is nuts). Sometime what a person needs is not someone like who she is (or who she think that wants), but someone who is different from her and complements her.

Next post: the movie.

Little32 06-09-2010 04:55 PM

The movie started out with conflicts that would have been interesting for the SATC characters, had the movie actually followed through on exploring them.

Miranda: the whole figuring out how to pursue her career differently in a way that was both more satisfying and more conducive to the kind of family life that she wanted to have.

Charlotte: has the family that she always wanted, but now is feeling like she can not deal with it.

Samantha: What are the lengths that she will go through to try to stay young; is there a tipping point.

Carrie: trying to figure out how it will be "Just Us Two" for the next 35 years. What will that look like and will it be satisfying.

All of these conflicts were introduced in the first 30 minutes, and they made sense for where these characters are in their lives. But instead of dealing with them, the women ran to the other side of the world. How unsatisfying. In Abu Dhabi, the only story line that was really picked up was Carrie's conflict and that was done so in an unsatisfactory way. Then they turn around and wrap it up in a neat little bow at the end, as though they did anything at all with these issues.

The women did look haggard, and I couldn't figure out why. There are ways, technical ways, to fix those flaws (to soften and stuff) but for some reason they weren't. I didn't get it.

Shellfish 06-09-2010 05:14 PM

What I'm curious about is the wedding early in the movie--I haven't even seen it yet but I already know so much about it. How do they explain those two ever getting together? It's so unlikely to anyone who watched the TV series. (I'm trying to avoid spoilers, but then again, the whole movie's been way spoilered all over the place.)

SJP crackhead mom??? Please give me the name of this gem so I can vote for it on Pick A Flick Friday. (Oh my Lord. I just admitted I know what Pick A Flick Friday is. Time for me to pick up my "spinster" t-shirt, y'all.)

I thought there was an episode where Stanny & Anthony hooked up but I could be wrong. I didn't watch but an episode or two until it was on TBS (I don't have HBO), and then only in the spirit of "I have to see it because everyone else has."

"In the Best Interest of the Children" (1992)

Sorry, she was a mother struggling with manic depression and 5 kids in the foster care system. She wasn't cracked out. I hope that doesn't ruin your excitement. :(

It's a TV movie that used to aire on Lifetime. Great movie.

There was an episode where Carrie and Charlotte try to hook Stanford and Anthony on a date. Anthony is a complete asshole to him. Then Stanford starts dating a dancer and Anthony does everything he can to be an asshole about everything. They eventually become friends. It's so funny that Anthony, as a wedding planner, lets Stanford take over the wedding plans in SATC2. Mario Cantone rocks by the way. :)

THANK YOU! I thought for SURE they would be airbrushed or something... they looked pretty rough. It makes me sad they're getting older!
