NPHC, NALFO, and similar orgs: Did you "rush" more than once?

For people who are in organizations which are in the style of NPHC, NALFO, NMGC, and "intake" based GLOs, did you rush more than once? Specifically, were you turned down once and tried again another time and made it?

For the aspirants, have you been turned down once?

Participation in this thread is voluntary. :)

knight_shadow 05-10-2010 10:32 AM

I went through IFC rush prior to rushing my (then-)NALFO organization. I did some research on the other organizations, but didn't participate in any informationals/interest meetings/etc other than my own organization's.

Senusret I 05-10-2010 10:37 AM

My black friends at Wash U in St. Louis used to sign up for rush so they could do fun stuff like rock climbing. They would decline every bid they got. lol

But yeah, though I presume there will be some people who went through IFC rush and then another council's process, I am interested in those people who were outright rejected the first time then tried again.

knight_shadow 05-10-2010 10:39 AM

Gotcha. Nope, that didn't happen to me.

Carry on :p

how far along in expressing interest qualifies as having "rushed"?

I was trying not to say it like that, but you know GCers act brand new!

I wouldn't even use the term "rush."

For many of us, the "rush" is the informational and/or where the application info is distributed. I would ask whether people participated in the application process but were not accepted and/or went through some stage of membership intake but were not initiated the first time around.

DrPhil 05-10-2010 10:51 AM

This can be a good damn thread. Ante up, people. :p

Right, that is what i was getting at, knowing this difference between our organizations (the sororities, anyway).

Now that the clarifying questions are out of the way, I'm going to go with no. We should use a different word/phrase than "rush, maybe "applied for membership?"

If so, I applied for membership for one organization and was accepted. Booyah. *avoids whip* who's next?

DrPhil 05-10-2010 11:05 AM

I don't think he was asking if people pursued more than one org at any level. LOL. I certainly hope no NPHCer of younger generations will come in here who was rejected by one org and joined another. Except that deltadevil poster wherever he is.

Of course, back in the day it wasn't uncommon to pledge one org and cross another.

Seriously not understanding the confusion.

If people want to answer whether it was more than one organization, that's on them. If you assumed I meant the same organization, then that is what I meant.

Because of you and knight_shadow's unrelated rants. You two brought up IFC rush and that other stuff.

Don't get cussed out in your own thread. LOL.

Senusret I 05-10-2010 11:25 AM

Shut up.

DrPhil 05-10-2010 11:26 AM

LOL.

dreamseeker 05-10-2010 01:24 PM

i was thisclose to turning in my app for an org, but they had a moratorium on intake that semester. it was heartbreaking but a blessing in disguise as i later discovered it was def not the org for me.

(is my semi-rejection the best this thread is gonna get? damn)

Senusret I 05-10-2010 01:30 PM

Which org? (You can whisper it in my ear)

Unfortunately I think though.

Call it the culture of our lovely band.

Senusret I 05-10-2010 02:14 PM

Nah. People have openly talked about not making it the first time on GC before, just not in one place.

Ch2tf 05-10-2010 02:16 PM

^^^
Yeah,

I don't think I even know of someone in this situation. In my experience the rejected applicant rarely ever applies a second time. I find they take it super personal and turn to org haters after the fact.

Little32 05-10-2010 02:20 PM

Submitted only once, but it took me a long bit to get to the stage where I could even do that. ;)

BluPhire 05-10-2010 02:20 PM

Well I do know of somebody that was rejected a couple of times by the same org only to be accepted her senior year.

Only problem I don't know if telling the story would violate NPHC discretion rules so I will leave it as vague as I described it above.

Does getting rejected but going grad count? If so I know a lot of them as well.

Nope--I only had eyes for one sorority, and if I had not been accepted or completed the membership process, I would have remained a "private citizen." :)

DrPhil 05-10-2010 03:24 PM

NPHC and GC rules and regulations

Never tell someone else's story. ;) Only tell your own. ;)

I do believe the point of this thread was never "not me...but I know someone...."

Yeah I knew I would get this answer. I was just inspired by some other threads I found while digging, wanted to see if the years have relaxed the rules. LOL

Animate 05-10-2010 04:01 PM

It was suggested to me to wait until grad since I was a senior at the time. One of the main reasons I respected those brothers afterwards.

Hmm. I have never heard of this before with an NPHC frat or sorority chapter.

I have. I've actually heard of it a lot in my area. Different chapters, different philosophies.

DUH. LOL. Also, different people in the chapter, different philosophies over time.

Thank God the people who crossed as seniors can't relate.

To answer Sen I's original question, yes.

This.

Senusret I 05-10-2010 09:46 PM

From my undergrad, all the men I know who weren't initiated returned to becoming private citizens, but all the women I knew tried again as undergrads or alumnae.

I wonder what that's about.

I had to apply twice. Glad I did, six years in and I love my SLG. :-)
