How do I start a high school fraternity
A bunch of my friends and I want to create a fraternity at our high school. I was wondering if you could give me some information on how to start one. What will I have to do to get one established? How should I obtain a charter for a frat? What other steps are involved in organizing a fraternity. I uld greatly appreciate it if you could answer the questions and send me your reply to Kthota@hotmail.com
Thanks |
Sorry Chfrat, you cannot start a fraternity when you are in high school. In order to start a fraternity you must be attending a college or university. That are NPC and IFC requirements, the only thing you can do in hish school is just have a club for your friends...without the greek lettering. Sorry and good luck to you when you do reach college!!
P.S. I know this because I happen to be a sorority sister and President of The Panhellenic Council at my university. |
I vaguly remeber stumbling across some fraternal organizations at high school level. I can only suggest to spend a few hours doing a bit of web research.
I would suggest - as with establishing a new organization - you will need to gain permission from the school administration and find a faculty advisor before proceeding. In order to do this you will need a purpose for the groups existance (ie what need is this organization going to serve that current ones don't). Many organizations, non-fraternal, exist that may serve your needs. If your purpose is for fellowship or service, I would sugguest looking into a service organizations such as habitat for humanity or 4H-club. Both organizations are structured not only to give community but to have memebers grow in fellowship thru service. If your purpose is more social, organizations such as the boys club, might be something you might consider looking into at a high school level. If your looking for an organization for just your friends, you will probalby find it difficult to establish. Good Luck Artimis [This message has been edited by Artimis (edited November 29, 1999).] |
I think you will find that most school administrators and faculty will frown on the idea of starting a fraternity or sorority in a high school. Do not expect to receive a warm reception to the idea.

I've run across references to high school fraternities before. Most of what I gathered was that they were subrosa groups (secret and not condoned by the school) as well as pretty violent (in their hazing and initiations), almost gang-like.
I think it's best to hold off on the fraternity stuff until you get to college. |
Hold on!!! Wat a minute!! There ARE fraternities at the high school level. There are two at my Alma mater of Southern High School in Durham, N.C. For the boys there's Theta Phi Psi anf for girls there's Theta Phi Delta. They follow similar guidelines as collegiate ones and wear letters, have a pledge period, perform step shows, the whole nine yards. So, to answer your question, YES THEY DO EXIST!
|
actually, High school fraternity's and sororities do exsist, and a lot of sororities(I am not sure whether fraternities do it) sponsor high school students as a lower level part of their organization. But there is quite a few high school fraternities.
To the orginal poster, do a lot of research, and figure out what exactly, you want your group to stand for , and other such information. If you need help with research drop me a line. One and Always Delta Gamma Pi MC Sorority |

Maybe I'll make it simple, some sororities at the college level, do sponsor high school students, as a "Lower Level " of their organization, not giving them collegiate status, but as almost a whole another group by it's self, but it is more high school related , as in helping them through school, and stuff like that, I don't know if th NPC side does that , but NPHC does have some groups affiliated with high school groups, when I was in high school a friend of mine was a rhoer, which was sponsored by a local sigma gamma rho chapter.
Thats what I meant by sponsor high school students being sponsored by a "collegiate sorority" "Delta Gamma Pi Sorority, only the best" |
DGPhoney, thank you for clarifying that!
I know that my fraternity is not allowed to affiliate with high school groups, and though I am not too familiar with NPC policy I'm assuming that they do not allow that also? |
CHfrat,
There were two high school fraternities in my hometown. They were not based on a particular high school. Guys from all four high schools were allowed to be members. They were city chapters, not school chapters. The two we had were Delta Sigma and Sigma Phi Omega. If you are interested, I can find out contact information for you. Also, if the girls in your town want to start a sorority, I can help them, as I have contacts with the Delta Beta Sigma high school sorority. All three GLOs were well-organized, with National Boards, rules, and rituals. They also had philanthropies. The girls' group is required to do at least one community service or philanthropy fund-raiser a month. The guys groups are not quite as active with philanthropies, but usually pitch in and help the girls. Hazing is against the rules, and most of the guidelines are aligned with those of NPC. Not on purpose, just using common sense. [This message has been edited by tcsparky (edited March 20, 2001).] |
hey CHFrat... you may want to look into your school's handbook and rules first also! I know that in my high school there were specific rules stating that fraternities and sororities were not allowed to be formed.

My fraternity, and the others in my town as well as the high school sororities, were National organizations: we all had old rituals and chapters elsewhere. HS fraternities exploded in number in the 1920s and survived both the Depression and WW2 in good shape, and they rebounded fully after WW2. They began to lose steam with the advent of the rock 'n' roll age and were almost swallowed by the turmoil of the 1960s and early 70s. By the late 1970s, few chapters survived of perhaps 5 or 6 HS fraternities, and most of those chapters had folded by the end of the 1980s. Some of the HS fraternities that I know that had National organizations are, in alphbetical order: Delta Sigma, Gamma Delta Psi, Phi Kappa, Phi Sigma Chi, Phi Sigma Epsilon, Sigma Phi Omega, Theta Kappa Omega. |
FYI...this thread is 6 years old.

I had some advice, but this is from 7 years ago. If dude's still in HS there is a problem. |

What was the HS fraternity like? This sounds interesting. |
Clearly, this is an old thread but we had a fraternity and a sorority in my high school. The sorority was all white and threw little functions and such. It was kind of a big deal, I know they have several chapters throughout the state, and that the majority of the members went on to be a part of college sororities. They also had a black fraternity named the betas. They were big as well. I recall going to another high schools prom (a majority black highschool unlike my own) and the MC would "throw his love" to the Beta's there.

My great-aunt and grandmother were members of high school sororities. I have my aunt's sorority ring from 1925-- her letters were 'gamma delta phi' and I've not been able to find any info about them. There are some old photos of her and her sisters wearing the old-fashioned black bathing suits with their letters! I hope those photos haven't been lost to the ages because they're so cute--- I'll have to ask my mom if she has them.
My dad told me that my grandmother and her sorority sisters used to have a lot of get togethers and activities when he was growing up. I learned all of this years after I pledged ADPi-- so much for being the first sorority woman in the family! :) |
There were greek groups at my high school that were known by the adminstration for years. They started folding up over the years so that by the time I graduated in 96 there were only 2 actually in existance. By that point it was more of social thing then anything else. Normally one was members of the National Honor Society and the other had cheerleaders and dance team members in it. Neither was very active.

I have to make a clarification. See, here's the problem with other people making statments about organizations they don't belong to.........Sigma Gamma Rho's YOUTH group is called Rhoers. They are in no way shape or form a high school sorority. The specific nature of these programs vary based on the sponsoring chapter, but the main goal is to mentor young women and help them to see that there is a life beyond high school. High school fraternities and sororities are a whole 'nother thing! My high school explictly banned them. I will let someone who has more initmate knowledge of these groups speak on them. |

Way Off Topic
I know this has nothing to do with this thread exactly, but this is something I've noticed quite often on GC in general. When someone brings back a thread from years ago, it gets pointed out how old it is. But when someone starts a new topic that has already been discussed, they are told to search for older threads. It's probably not the same people doing both things, but its like you can never win! :)

When someone quotes the OP (original poster) and tries to give them personal advice, or, better yet goes off on a complete tirade on them, then we think the person is weird and point out the age of the thread, and the fact that the OP probably doesn't care about "Does Chi Zeta at Billy Bob U haze?" because they probably have their PhD by then. |

Wow.... so I guess the only real fraternities are those that are a part of NPC and IFC? That's incredibly closed minded of you. |

Just something to consider. |
Omega Phi Xi High School Band Fraternity Inc.
My wonderful fraternity Omega Phi Xi Inc. is a wonderful band fraternity. We step we get hype the gurls luv us greek letter shirts, hoodies, hats, and Spray Painted Marching boots. We are not secrective of our frat the Principal knows about us we do community service for our city and School. Are high school is like a college campus feel and we plan to spray paint the trees bricks with our lettering in the ground our sheild on the wall and we got approved to do it. We are becoming a honorary band frat for DSA Marching Band. We go through pledgeing process rituals the fire from getting the smoke brought to u but after u cross it is worth being Omega Phi Xi Inc. trust me its alot of baseball swingers on the frat we are not little brothers of any national black fraternity and we are Legally Incorporated by the Michigan Government. We are great musicians and we do community service for our city we live up to the meaning of being Omega Phi Xi high school band frat. We are trying to go national in all urban high school marching bands because we are known through out the detroit high school bands and they are interested in becoming a chapters of Omega Phi Xi high school band fraternity Inc. we are all about brotherhood sticking together and male student body always ask how can I be a pledge and we say get in the band and get sweet on a instrument. and We have sistas as well and a social group called the Q Phi Sweeties dance team members, poms, flags, cheerleaders, and bad chicks that just go to the perspective high school.

First, you need to know it would not be a sorority/fraternity. It would be an extracarricular group/org/activity at the school that would have stipulations, i.e., grades!
I would suggest getting people together who may be interested (on your own time) then proposing the idea to the administration along with the name of all the interested people. I would also suggest running the idea across a few teachers who may consider the idea of being a sponsor for the group. Most high schools here have organization like this; mademoiselles, gents, ladies of distinction. I even sponsor a group of 5th & 6th grade girls who compete in different step competitions, have sleepovers, attend functions like college stepshows and football games, etc. Its a good idea if you have purpose behind it. |

You refer to your "Band frat" as "Inc." - are you actually incorporated, or did you just think it sounds cool? |

Please dont get it twisted, we did all the same thing in high school, hell night and all, we were on hands & knees at a homecoming game, but compared to college, its a cake walk. You will have groupies in college just like you did in high school, they just call them aux groups now! You just need make sure your grades are up to par and stay focused... keep in 100 lil man! |
Little brother
WoW! What's up Youngin'? I truly appreciate the level of spirit that you have for this organization/group that you are attached to, but, trust us when we tell you, that it will pale in comparison to the real deal and, its supposed to. Stay attached to this thing, for the fun and the experience of it, but know that what it is near to, symbolically, is of an intensely sacred nature to a lot of men and women, and there's some etiquette that you guys need to follow, so, when you get a chance, seek some guidance on how to stay within the confines of a high school organization/group.
My specific advice is this, never let the experiences that you'll undergo while being a part of this group, ever allow you to think that the true pledge process is anything akin to what you've experienced at the high school level. I laughed when I read where you stated that "hell night was worth it". That's funny, because a true Hell Night is just what it says, Hellish, lil' buddy. Lastly, if the opportunity to pledge arises once you go away to school, never allow yourself to think that you have an edge over the people that you may pledge with, if they weren't into something like this while in high school. You guys are not a fraternity, and, actually, your group does not come anywhere near what a fraternity is. You'll learn the difference once you have arrived at whatever college campus you are destined to attend, and make no bones about it, you "must" go to college lil' man, the only other option is the military, but, you will choose whatever direction is best for you. Peace |
You do realize that the original post is over seven years old... ;)
The OP has probably graduated HS long since, and possibly gone on to college and joined a college fraternity. You never know. |
oh yeah?
How long does a post last on the GC?
