Erykah Badu - Window Seat Video

This is has been getting coverage ALL day yesterday and today (I live in DFW). In case you haven't seen the video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uS3ikrTJTqk

Apparently, the director didn't secure any permits and the filming occurred while "regular" folks (not extras) were visiting the JFK memorial.

DaemonSeid 03-30-2010 12:58 PM

She has a fat ass, that's it.

The end.

Understatement of the year.

Senusret I 03-30-2010 01:06 PM

She's a phony. I'm tired of all this "I'm so deep watch me take off my clothes" melodrama.

Her dreadlocks weren't even real.

DaemonSeid 03-30-2010 01:07 PM

Well it's old hat now...

Madonna did this, Alanis (FIXED!) Morrisette and a few more...now the question is, if I remember correctly Badu has been against 'selling out' to the music industry just to sell records.

She killed that right here and moreso, in public.

Kinda like Kennedy

Exactly @ SensI about the dredds...I lost so much respect for her when I found out they were fake.

So many people will miss whatever message she was attempting to make with this song and focus on the fact that she stripped nude in public to make a record.

I love Erykah, but I've been kinda eh with this whole "controversy" that's unfolding.

Her reasoning was that she's "fighting groupthink" by going against the grain. I saw nekkid ass.

Her music is amazing (IMO), and I applaud her courage for being so vulnerable in public, but yeah...I've seen ass before. Not necessarily groundbreaking.

Co-sign with the last part.

;) I've seen her in concert. She's awesome but her authenticity was ALWAYS questioned--going back to her days as a college beauty queen. People who are looking for a "different kind of artist" have really found an actress and borderline attention whore in Badu. India.Arie is more understatedly "different" than she is--but EVERY "different" person is just like every other "different" person. :) Not so "different" afterall.

And, for the record, Maxwell's "afro" wasn't real. It was a weave. So, he didn't really CUT his hair the way it is now.

Don't believe everything you hear or read. I don't believe this at all and never did.

Co-sign to the fullest. I only checked out the vid b/c I heard so much about it from others, and I wanted to see it for myself. I can now vouch, I'm a believer, 'nuff said.

*And I K.I.M.*

If believing his hair was real makes you happy, enjoy yourself. ;)

DrPhil 03-30-2010 07:18 PM

Oh I always loved this song.

But...I don't like the video. I can heterosexually appreciate a woman with a nice body...LOL...and the poetic expression of the video matched the "window seat" theme--but it didn't entertain me. And...I don't look to recording artists for enlightenment...just entertain me and sitchoass(no pun intended)downsomewhere.

knight_shadow 03-30-2010 07:29 PM

On the local news:

Coming up at 9 - A woman who was there with her children when the singer bared all and what she plans to do about it!

DPD already said that they aren't going to do anything. What does this woman think she's going to do?

I guess I'll see at 9...

ETA:

"I was a fan until that moment!"

She's going to file a complaint about the video and is now talking live with Fox News. It looks like her daughter was coached before doing the interview.

Apparently, the filming lasted for about 30 seconds and "traumatized" her daughter.

GTFOHWTBS.

VandalSquirrel 03-30-2010 10:06 PM

I can't believe she walked barefoot on a city street, and I think a woman covered the eyes of her little boy at about 3:00 in the link from the first post.

I really liked when music videos told a story that wasn't completely explained in the song. Of course that can be dangerous when someone like R.Kelly does it.

DaemonSeid 03-30-2010 10:39 PM

You mean you didn't like In the Closet???

honeychile 03-31-2010 02:53 PM

Sometimes the music doesn't merit the video.

FYP ;)

Random observation: Her last album was very political, but she released a light-hearted song as the leading single. This album is pretty much the opposite (more laid back, with a "controversial" leading video). Maybe that was her plan? I don't know.

knight_shadow 04-02-2010 06:25 PM

DALLAS - Dallas police and the city attorney say Erykah Badu broke the law when she stripped naked at Dealey Plaza in front of visitors, including children.

Dallas police announced Friday they will be charging the Dallas singer with disorderly conduct in connection with her controversial video filmed in downtown Dallas. The citation is expected to be issued next week.

DrPhil 04-02-2010 06:54 PM

Good. Musicians don't get a pass unless the laws change for the general population.

As far as I'm concerned, what she did was a very "follower" thing to do. She knew it would get a lot of attention and spark sales of her album. I wish she had let her good music and lyrics do that.

Senusret I 04-02-2010 07:06 PM

Throw her ass UNDER the jail!

:)

Another Erykah "controversy"

Quote:

Watch: New Controversial Music Video From Erykah Badu (w/ The Flaming Lips) NSFW

Remember the conversation starter that was her Windows Seat music video in 2010? Well, wait till you get a load of this :)

Note that while she's clearly nude in the bathtub, the more revealing body shots belong to someone else; and, oh yeah, it's NSFW.
This link is absolutely, positively, totally, completely not safe for work

at work and will not click link. thanks for your warnings, but...

what SONG is the video for at least?

knight_shadow 06-04-2012 12:32 PM

The Flaming Lips + Erykah Badu - 'The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face'

Iota Man 06-04-2012 12:46 PM

I love Erykah Badu.

pshsx1 06-04-2012 06:50 PM

Here's what someone in the comments said:

Quote:

I guess I see it straight-up as a woman surviving what the world has tried to make of her. The heavy echo, long phrasing and minimal accompanyment of starke percussive tones in this rendition of the song stretch, distort, and harden the subject that is about having once been completely love-struck ... the cumulative affect evokes the sensation of indifference in retrospect, having survived utter disillusionment. She heals from the pain (from the blackened eye) and is cleansed (bathed) having endured objectification, idolization, sexulization, and violence of all types (stripped to nakedness, lavished with golddust, bloodied by her own natural reproductive phases as well as by the hands and penises -- and general regard -- of men). But this is only my perspective as a mature white female. It is entirley possible that this is meant to have a race component, which would be understandable given our cultural history.
"Interesting" video, to say the least... The end looked like the end of a really, really, really messy porno... just sayin'

DrPhil 06-04-2012 07:08 PM

Dumb and boring video, double meanings and all. Yeah...we get it. Great.

Naked does not bother me so wooptywoo. Breasts, butt, vagina...congrats on losing the weight, Erykah Badu.

The images in the video had meaning to her but it bored the hell out of me even the final cum shot scene. It does seem as though she is being contrary and controversial for the sake of being contrary and controversial.

Most importantly, I love "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face." Shout out to Ewan MacColl/Peggy Seeger and Roberta Flack (who did the first remake and the best remake).

als463 06-04-2012 09:06 PM

Maybe I'm not nearly as artistic as I would like to think but, I was so confused watching the video and I could barely hear what she was singing. What was the video about?

DrPhil 06-04-2012 09:24 PM

In some parts, I only know what she's saying because I know the original song. For those who don't know what she is saying:

First Time Ever I Saw Your Face

The first time ever I saw your face
I thought the sun rose in your eyes
And the moon and stars were the gifts you gave
To the dark and the empty skies, my love,
To the dark and the empty skies.

The first time ever I kissed your mouth
And felt your heart beat close to mine
Like the trembling heart of a captive bird
That was there at my command, my love
That was there at my command.

And the first time ever I lay with you
I felt your heart so close to mine
And I knew our joy would fill the earth
And last till the end of time my love
It would last till the end of time my love

The first time ever I saw your face, your face,
your face, your face

As for what the video is about, that depends on how you want to view it. LOL. It can be taken different ways.

Ditto. Though Roberta Flack's and Leona Lewis' versions are my two favorites.

I'm not interested in seeing the video but it is quite a lovely song.

DrPhil 06-07-2012 05:02 PM

The nudity is supposedly her sister Nayrok as her body double. However, one report says both she and her sister appeared nude. Oh well....

Also.....

Maybe this is true and maybe this is more publicity just like when Erykah Badu was going on and on about how she wasn't arrested for the "Window Seat" nudity. Who knows.

Dumb and boring video regardless.

Good song, though, and it is a The Flaming Lips song. It is not Erykah Badu's song therefore this is not "Badu's new song and video" as many media outlets and fans have been reporting.

I follow her on T_witter (well before this issue) and have noticed that her tweets changed from "Respect my vision as an artist. Art is supposed to prompt discussion" to "OMG HE RELEASED THIS WITHOUT MY PERMISSION"

Wayne's tweets have cracked me up, but overall, this seems like a big ass PR stunt. I am ready for this to pass.
