Trying to find out more about the organization, but i dont want to be annoying..

My name is jay... I'm a freshman, and i wanna attempt to join a fraternity next year when i return as a Sophomore.. i was on twitter one day and talkn to a member of a different fraternity, and we were telling jokes about a Trending Topic. in the process, 2 of the members of the fraternity that i actually want to join began to converse with us, and followed me on twitter. A couple of days ago, i sent a private message to one of the members saying that i was interested in learning more about the organization, but haven't received a response... should i mention the DM to him? or just relax and wait? i dont wanna sound annoying cuz i know that nobody wants to be annoyed, i just want to learn more about it other then what i've researched.

dreamseeker 03-16-2010 04:59 PM

BillionaireJ 03-16-2010 05:00 PM

dreamseeker, i just looked at your profile and saw that you asked for suggestions on who to follow on twitter. why are you making fun of it? since you're on it yourself you must know that it a great way to meet and talk to new people.

BillionaireJ 03-16-2010 05:14 PM

well im not using it to stalk anyone. i even said in my post, he joined in on what me and the other guy were doing and he just so happened to be a member of the fraternity that i wish to join...

dawn87 03-16-2010 05:15 PM

yea, that's it. i stalked you. right. don't flatter yourself. just saying you shouldn't make fun of someone for using something that you use, too.

dreamseeker 03-16-2010 05:15 PM

i don't think that twitter is appropriate for that. find another venue.

twitter is fine. if you asked him about the fraternity a while ago then maybe you should remind him about the DM. if it's only been a day or two i'd wait it out a bit longer.

twitter is a social networking site. of course it's appropriate for that because that's exactly what he's doing.

Because you have so much experience in Greek life? Seriously, you've said some things on here (in your grand total of 4 posts) that would make it very easy for someone at your school to pick you out during recruitment. Try being nice and listening to those who have experience in this area. GreekChat has many helpful threads that you can read.

Twitter is NOT an appropriate venu to inquire about membership, period. And if members of your org of desire are now following you, I recommend you be VERY cautious with what you tweet about.

BillionaireJ 03-16-2010 05:38 PM

thank you VERY much. thats what i needed. lol

Senusret I 03-16-2010 05:40 PM

If you're referring to an NPHC fraternity, feel free to send me a PM. If not, can't help ya, partner.

BillionaireJ 03-16-2010 05:47 PM

Lol yeah man, honestly i didnt know that it was as serious as it is before i got to college. thats why now, im just trying to find out as muchhhh as possible before i make my decision you know?

Senusret I 03-16-2010 05:47 PM

On second thought, I'll post my response for everyone.

I don't think it's a major faux pas to ask the initial question privately on Twitter, but you really should have asked him in person first. I would advise any young man pursuing membership in a fraternity to show interest by (in order):

1) Attending the events, especially community service.

2) If there are no public events that you can ascertain (no website, no facebook fan page, no Twitter to follow for events), THEN find a member and ask him if there are any community service projects you can attend.

3) If you have a good personality, the guys will like you and ultimately share with you the information you need. Be mindful that not every organization is like this, so you may need to

4) Take one of the members to the side after a public event, tell them you've been enjoying yourself, and how might one go about pursuing membership.

It needs to be organic. It needs to be two men who are acquainted with each other having a natural conversation about it.

Many undergrads would not mind that you inquired via Twitter. Many would. I would avoid it. But now that the horse has left the barn, try to do as much of what I already said as possible.

BillionaireJ 03-16-2010 05:51 PM

Yeah, their events are about to start up soon, i only have info on one now but im sure that when i attend and actually meet the guys in person we'll get along because we already got somewhat acquainted on twitter, not related to the organization, just on a friendly level. and im confident that my personality is open enough to get more information. im attending their first event and they guys know that. thanks for the help guys. ima keep reading up on these forums and stuff to see what other info i dont know that everyone else seems to.. lol
