How was your teaching/subbing today?
I felt bad for always bombarding the "What do you feel like saying?" thread with my daily updates for subbing, so I'm starting this one. How did teaching or subbing go for you today?
I just started working for a bigger district, and they have been hooking me up! I've gotten work for 3 out of 4 days this week already. I had 8th grade PE on Monday. Some classes were good, some were okay, and 5th period SUCKED. It was definitely an experience! I had frosh/soph history today which I LOVED! It was my first time subbing for high school, and it was just pretty awesome. Tomorrow, I'm going to be at an elementary school. Judging by the time they want me there until, I think it's 4th or 5th grade. Always a new adventure when you sub! |
I didn't work today, or yesterday :(
It's standardized testing time, so during this time teachers aren't usually allowed to miss. Tomorrow I have a 1/2 day with 2nd graders. I love 2nd graders, so far that has been my favorite grade. Monday I had 4th graders, pretty sweet 1/2 day also. I don't really like HS, it's too boring. I just sit there. lol |
Are those of us with field hours allowed to comment? I'm teaching 6 lessons this semester to a high school English class  It's my first time teaching an actual K-12 class so it'll be interesting...

Good luck to all the subs out there.... I did off and on from 2003 to 2007.

I taught Kindergartners...in SPANISH!
I was a roving sub today, but I didn't know that until I got there. I had 1st grade, Kindergarten, and 4th grade all before lunch, and it was only a half-day. As soon as I walked into Kindergarten, the teacher asked if I could read in Spanish. Uhhh, show time! I read the kids a story then helped them draw a picture and write something in their journals about it. I'm really proud of myself because I did really well even though I haven't spoken Spanish in a while! There was a room mom there who helped me a lot, and we spoke Spanish almost exclusively. Yayyyy! |
Nice Lucy :) I personally don't like doing the bilingual (i'll make the exception for my aunt's 2nd grade class only though) classes....go figure! lol.
The 2nd graders I had today were a little ummmm.....well, rambunctious. lol. I actually feel REEEEAAALLLY bad though cause my friend asked me to sub for her class this morning, cause her daughter's real sick, but I couldn't. I know I shouldn't feel bad or guilty cause she did tell me @ 5:30 am, but I would have much rather subbed for her instead. But my district has a policy that you can only cancel 3 jobs a year, and I reached my limit. Idk what they would have done had I cancelled, but I didn't want to find out--I like having a job. lol |
My 3rd period class was rowdy.
2nd period was great. 1st is usually groggy. And, it was a half day, so the kids left at 12:30p! All of us teachers got to work and meet with parents all afternoon! |
I've got 3rd grade tomorrow. I almost didn't accept the job cause I had elementary school today, but it's seriously 5 minutes from my house, and they don't start until 9! I got this!!

It's my third year and I feel like I've finally "got it." I teach kindergarten and I love it (now). I've never loved my kids like I love them this year. :)
I've always considered teaching older kids, because I would really like to get into history in a way that I can't with the babies, but now that K is growing on me I don't know... Has anyone else switched from early elementary to middle or HS? How was it for you? |
O M G :mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:
That is what I feel about my day! |
Our standardized testing starts next week. So, no homework, no tests, no lesson plans, we work on writing our short stories during our free time after IOWAS.
Today was alright. My eighth graders had a letter due, and I'm really scared to grade them! |
Rehearsal went well Thursday, when they decide to learn and retain they are taught and what we fix, they are amazing.
First show is tomorrow, I'm nervous for them! |
3rd grade on Friday was awesome! I really like the school, I got free Chinese food for lunch, and the kids were great. I also talked to the secretary and got on her sub list. Woo!

It was a baaad day. The principal, a counselor and 2 teachers were involved, that's all I gotta say! lol |

Our first show was great! The members really stepped it up in rehearsal and at the show. We know what we need to focus on but we have a good foundation for the rest of the season.
|
I'm doing my ice breaker with the classes tomorrow :) We're doing M&Ms and Skittles and each color has two corresponding questions. They'll answer about four-five questions each. We made up the questions and stuff today so I'm excited and slightly nervous. But the kids get free candy and time off class so I'm thinking they'll be happy lol.
|
On Monday and Tuesday, I had 6th and 7th grade science. It went fine, and the second day, we watched a rad movie about dinosaurs! I was honestly super fascinated!
I didn't sub today, but they wanted me to do high school PE. Ummm no thank you! I can't sub tomorrow, but I hope I get something for Friday! |
We did our icebreaker this morning. It was fun but I was really nervous for the first time we did it lol. The first period class only has twelve kids. Six are boys and six are girls so it's a nice even split. .They're pretty quiet and reserved. That is my class lol. The other girl's class is 16 boys and 8 girls. It's very, very loud. I'll have problems getting mine to talk and she'll have problems getting hers to shut up lol. Even though we're only teaching one class it was nice to see the differences between the classes. Now I just have to figure out how to teach things like vocab in context, thesis statements, and how to research in a fun way. I want to do a game with the vocab but I only have 10-15 minutes for the lesson. I could go up to 20 if I have to but we'll see. Who knows, maybe someone will have good ideas on here :D
|
Today was ok. It was only 1/2 day for my old HS English teacher. They had mock testing, so I just sat in the classroom for 3 hours while the students took their science test. And then I got to hear all about the other teacher's lovely ideas of marriage.
|
I just got back from getting ready for a sub. I have a mild case of the flu and would rather be teaching my kids, but I don't want to take a chance of passing my nastiness on to anyone else.
I am exhausted -- I swear it takes just as long to prepare your plans and room for a sub than to actually go in and teach. |
Today was mixed. I seriously have to be more mean when I start class! They were taking quizzes all day, and I had a lot of trouble keeping them quiet. BS! The classes after lunch were better, though.
|
I taught my vocab lesson today. It went okay. I was nervous so I sort of rushed through it but she wasn't too concerned about that. She did say I need to watch how often I say "you guys" since sometimes administrators get upset about stuff like that. I don't even notice I'm saying it so it's definitely something I'm going to have to work on. The kids were pretty good though, they responded well. One I just adore because she helps me out a lot. She always greets me in the morning and tries to answer as many questions as she can for me. I appreciate them not giving me any trouble. Right now I'd like to concentrate on teaching as much as possible and not on classroom management until I have a few more lessons under my belt at least :p
I'm teaching research topics on Thursday. I'm not really sure what I'm going to do with it yet. They're not allowed to pick certain topics so idk what to do. It's supposed to be persuasive so I think they'll have to do some serious thinking. I was planning on having them think about hobbies or activities they enjoy and then trying to think about any topics in those that could be used in a persuasive research paper. I just don't really know what to do with them for this lol. |
I got called for a high school near my house today, and it's going great!
I also figured out I worked 15 days during March. It doesn't sound like that much, but it'll add up on payday! April 10th can't come soon enough. |
AUGH!!! One of my classes drives me completely bonkers!! They are completely apathetic! I can't wait for them to graduate and LEAVE!!!
|
The kinder kids were adorable today, although one little girl I could do without. Once she left, things went MUCH MUCH smoother.
I'm sad I won't be able to sub for them on Thursday like I thought I would be able to. Sooo...one of my mom's co-workers got a position at another school, and so that leaves her position open. The school district isn't allowing anyone to be hired, but they are accepting long-term subs. I've pretty much been told if I want it, I have it. 8th grade ELAR (English/Language Arts/Reading). Kind of excited about it, kinda not. I'll be teaching, i'll be doing lesson plans, i'll be doing grading. All I know is I get frustrated easily, and middle schoolers will pick up on that and run with it. Lord help me! lol |
Quote:
That's awesome news. 8th grade? I don't envy you at all. It takes a very special person to teach middle school. I think I'll stick to my toddlers:p |

lol....i love the elementary kids, but since my certification is 4-8, i could teach middle school if I so choose to. So this will be an experience for me. Who knows I might actually like it. I spoke to the principal, and my mom (who's a teacher there) and the consensus is that I WON'T be teaching the ELAR class, but I'll be teaching math instead. The sub that is doing math can't handle it, so they'll give her the ELAR class, and since I'm better at math, i'll take over for her. It's supposedly a better job, for me, because the kids aren't as bad and the classes are smaller. So i'll be teaching math (mostly remedial math) for 6, 7, and 8th graders. And some days i'll be 'team teaching' with other math teachers. We'll see what happens, and how long I stay (right now its only til like next friday, but if the teacher stays in the hospital, it'll be for longer). |
first day back after spring break was pretty good today they were chatty but actually did work and the day seemed to go by fast! yay!
|
I'm on break and terribly bored. :(
|
My terror child clawed (and I mean that literally) my arm. I have my left arm bandaged from the 4 long scratches she left on me when she threw another fit.

I've pretty much been given freedom to do whatever lessons I choose (well for the 7th and 8th graders) but i'm still a little lost. lol. The classes are remedial for the kids who didn't pass the TAKS (our standardized test) and the teacher really didnt' do anything with them. I just hope i'm helping them. |

we had a lockdown drill today for 90 minutes.... uugh! talk about a way to drive you crazy! |
No one wants me to sub this week, but I kind of expected that for the week after break. I did sub on Monday, but the teacher already knew me.
|
After the terrible day I had yesterday, today was fantastic!!
The kids were a mess yesterday, omg. So glad that day was over with! lol. Today though, the kids have been great....especially my 8th graders, surprisingly. I swear when my biggest troublemaker (in that class) is gone, it's like the others are fine---even though when I told the kids that, they didn't believe me lol. It is like night and day when he's around vs when he's not. We played with the Tangrams today and I gave candy to whoever made the shapes first, and then we did a worksheet on breaking the Tangrams into Fractions. I didn't want to do a lot since they got their scores back. 1 did reeeeeaally well (he got commended, which means he got a 85% or higher) and a few others passed. Which is awesome since none of them passed last year (thus why they were in this class lol). Gah I hope tomorrow is good (same kids as yesterday).....pray for me! lol |
I JUST got called for a sub job today. They asked me to do PE at a school I already had a bad experience.
1) I don't do PE. My profile already says this. 2) Not crazy about this school. 3) I already planned stuff today since I didn't get a call this morning! |

Wednesdays are always hard no matter what age group. I don't know what it is about the middle of the week that makes all the kids lose their minds. I totally know what you mean about how the room seems different when just one kid is gone. It's like you can get more things done because you're not always having to focus on That One.:D Today was a good day cause all the kids took 1 1/2 to 2 hour naps. My kids ( 12 months-18months) seem to think that naps are overrated. They think they can get by with only a 30 min to an 1hour nap:eek::rolleyes: A sleepy, cranky toddler is so not cute. So yay, for long naps. |
