Official Alpha Phi jewel?
Hello ladies,
I was always under the impression (both before and after initiation) that our fraternity didn't have an official jewel or precious stone, but I've read in some materials about our history that soon after the founding of Alpha Phi, the ruby was chosen as the official jewel. While rubies would be an obvious choice, does anyone know if this is true and why it's not more widely known/publicized? Were rubies the jewel of choice when our official colors used to be blue and gold? Also, if this is sensitive information, I had no idea, so please let me know ASAP so I can remove it. Thank you in advance. Best regards, GT Alpha Phi |
Sorry to crash, but the Alpha Phi's on my campus said that pearl is your official jewel. Perhaps it's done by campus?
Leaving now, thanks for having me :) |
Thanks for your input, ColdInCanada11!
I was actually a charter member of my chapter, and we had consultants from our international executive office and our huge Atlanta alumnae chapter guiding us, and no one mentioned anything about a jewel throughout the installation process. We can already have pearls (and diamonds) on our badges...how pretty would rubies and pearls be? |
I can't hate on pearls (Gotta love those 14 pearls!), but I think that a ruby would look amazing in your badge!
I've never been told we have an official jewel. Maybe the diamonds and pearls are our unofficial official ones because they look so nice on the badge? :) Although I'd love a ruby on the badge, or a garnet!
I will go into my Ivy Leaf and double check, but I'm pretty sure we don't have one.
Jen, CougarGrad, and lauralaylin: please check your PM's.
You know what, I'm such a dork... I think I did read that once. Thanks for pointing it out!
I have no idea either, but I would like to know if someone could PM me the information!
Me too!! I didn't know anything about an official jewel...if we have one.
Let me see if I can forward y'all what was sent to me...
I'd be interested to know too if you're able to forward it on!
To pomplemousse12, epchick, and DefyingGravity: please check your PM's.
To everyone else: if any of you are or know anyone authoritative enough or are planning to go to convention or something, would it be possible to bring this up as a point of clarification? |
I wish I could go to Convention this year, but unfortunately I will probably be in France for the entire month of July (well not too unfortunate, but still, I'm sad to be missing out), but I could bring it up at our next chapter meeting to the two members I know going to it to see if they could bring it up.
I'm going to convention as an advisor, so I'll be at all the meetings, but would someone PM me info too so that I know what I should spefically ask for clarification on? If it's something from one of the history books, I think I know, but I just want to be 100% sure.

jewled badges
In everything that I have read and learned through history of Alpha Phi books and convention, I do not recall an "official" jewel of the fraternity. (I will double check my history books when I get home, though)
I do know that all initiated sisters may only wear the white or yellow "gold" badge (not silver... remember the song, "so now I'm wearing that golden pin, silver and bordeaux, and it stands for top notch girls wherever you go."). Only certain sisters may officially order and wear the lazy phi. ELCs may get one with an emerald in the middle, Chapter Advisors may wear the Emerald as well, Chapter Presidents may wear one with a turquoise, Alumni Chapter Presidents (like me) wear with pearls or (now) with the Turquoise, International Board members and Foundation Board Members have ruby and saphire, respectively, I believe. Hope that helps some. I upgraded my badge after becoming Alumnae Chapter President before Convention in '08. I ordered the White Gold Lazy Phi with the Pearls and it is my most prized possession. It also matches my Mikimoto pearls that I always wear with it! (My two little dippers drool over my badge whenever I wear it and they always ask when they will be able to have one just like it.) I would recommend the white gold to anyone as an upgraded badge. Always start with the yellow gold plain like everyone else, I think that is just a common bond point, but when you upgrade, go for the white. Always and Forever, Union Hand In Hand, aoe, Jeannette |
