State of the Union Address

i've never watched an entire address. President Obama is good at delivering speeches, though. he must've aced Public Speaking 101.

i saw Democratic strategist Paul Begala on The Colbert Report report last night. he suggested that Obama go on the attack and slam the Republican party for the economic philosophies and policy decisions that all led up to current problems.

if that happens, i don't know whether it would shed a poor light on Dems as vindictive finger-pointers, or rally his party to start exercising their majorities in the house and senate.

either way, it's bound to be a good speech, and i'll watch until i'm too bored to stand it.

plus, Jon Favreau, the director of speech writing, has been seeing Rashida Jones. and she is smoking hot. her being hot has nothing to do with the State of the Union Address, i just thought i would mention that.

DrPhil 01-27-2010 08:10 PM

:p rant, since you brought up his supposed speech greatness/
Unless I'm forced to do so, I probably won't watch the entire address. I'll likely catch the "long story short" of it all or something. I actually hate the way he talks and delivers speeches. I wish more people (based on stuff I've heard other people say) had other reasons for being excited to watch this, such as...oh...wanting to stay informed about what any POTUS has to say.
/rant over

I hope he doesn't go on the attack. Bipartisanism is dumb and distracting enough. We have way too many things going on domestially (and internationally) to keep allowing such diversion tactics. Both Dems and Repubs suck.

FHwku 01-27-2010 08:58 PM

bipartisanism is dumb when nothing gets done. if the Dems squander their opportunity to implement (forcefully or not) the changes they've harped about for year, then they deserve every bit as much contempt as the people that have been trying to maintain the status quo.

so far, the great change so many hoped for has been the great fail.

DrPhil 01-27-2010 09:12 PM

I think bipartisanism is dumb period. We'll see if Obama can get beyond bipartisanism to get closer to a more unified front (one of his many campaign promises) because the issues that need to be addressed aren't really contingent upon political party.

LucyKKG 01-27-2010 10:32 PM

I'm much more likely to read a synopsis online. The state of the union is bound to be a lonnnnng speech, and I get lost in it. (Does that make me sound dense?)

No, because this shit is boring propaganda. Ugh.

Psi U MC Vito 01-27-2010 10:39 PM

State of the Union Addresses in general are like that. In all honestly most speechs by any political figure is like that.

op ur poll needs another option :p

Kappamd 01-27-2010 10:58 PM

Choosing to not watch seems the be the smart thing to do, unless you want to watch all the democrats make googly eyes at Obama and listen to the constant stream of BS he seems to be spouting.

Snooze.

I'm flipping to Toddlers and Tiaras.

DrPhil 01-27-2010 11:06 PM

I'm watching it now. I guess I missed about 30 minutes of it. I had to convince myself to watch...now I'm being forced to watch until we're ready for the Redbox movie.

I caught it when my homies McCain, Lieberman, and them were standing and clapping. There were so many standing ovations that it was sickening.

Politicians are so funny. The Repubs smiled and stood when Obama said "and if anyone knows how to address this health care issue, let me know...." LOL...it was cute.

Obama is being Obama. He was a little sarcastic a few times including "that's how a budget is done *sniff sniff*" And catching the synopsis tomorrow would've lost the sarcasm.

But, a lot of what he is saying is valuable in terms of the Federal spending freeze beginning in 2011 because, like he said, the government should be saving money just like tax payers are saving money now.

Also, I was amused by "getting over the school yard talks of who's the toughest."

DrPhil 01-27-2010 11:08 PM

Okay, Redbox, here I come.

"Support the troops when they come home..."

Joe Biden has a really nice smile. Really nice. How you doing, Joe? :)

Kappamd 01-27-2010 11:16 PM

Its like a trainwreck; I can't stop watching.

Holy awkwardness. When he made the comment about allowing people of other sexual orientations (or whatever PC jargon he spit out) to serve in the military and the camera panned to the military guys in the crowd-the only ones not cheering, clapping, standing....Yikes.

Kappamd 01-27-2010 11:18 PM

Also, Nancy Pelosi's blinking is very distracting.

moe.ron 01-27-2010 11:24 PM

Trying to figure out a drinking game to the Obama's State of the Union. It's never going to be as fun as Bush's State of the Union.

What's wrong with Gays serving in the military?

They are not supposed to, neither is the supreme court.

Kappamd 01-27-2010 11:28 PM

I didn't say there was anything wrong with it. It was just an awkward moment when they chose not to react.

^^My bad. The way the media played it, it seemed like it was a big deal.

I went with the 3rd option, cause I felt it was most like what I'm thinking now. I'm not going to watch it at all. Eh.

Currently there is a policy known as Don't Ask, Don't Tell which means that LGBT can serve in the military, but have to hide their orientation. Part of Obama's campaign promises was to get rid of that policy. For those watching, is he actually going to do so?

To expand on this, The military is supposed to publicly support any foreign policy he makes, but have no interest in domestic policy. IIRC that is.

I seriously doubt it.

And seriously Republicans, could you have been any more obvious with your selection of people to sit behind the governor?

moe.ron 01-27-2010 11:45 PM

Anybody figure out a drinking game for Obama's State of the Union yet?

Sorry I meant did he said he was going to do so. And since we are on the subject, is DADT currently a matter of law or DoD policy?

Actually I looked it up and it is indeed part of the United States Code. So it is up to Congress to repeal it.

I noticed some people leaping out of their seats to clap right BEFORE he said the inspiring part. I wondered if they were telepathic or something.

I think he will, but that doesn't mean anything will change. Legislature changes law, not feelings. When you're facing a high-charged situation like that, knowing full-well what the military attitude is, "official policy" means crap.

I'm looking at Facebook and see people are talking smack about the speech already (on Facebook). That would be fine, but these particular people have made it clear that they "refused to watch." Um, if you didn't hear ANY of it, what exactly are you commenting on?

The same thing that fans of Obama who didn't watch are commenting on: How they feel about Obama, political parties, etc.

Which is equally dumb, IMO. Comment on what you know, but it's not a good idea to pass judgement (good or bad) on something you didn't even hear.

AGDee 01-28-2010 07:45 AM

Here is the reality: If your belief systems are primarily in line with the Republicans, you hate what Obama wants to do. If your belief systems are primarily in line with the Democrats, you like what Obama wants to do. If you're in the middle, then you hate some stuff and like other things.

Welcome to our two party system.

Anybody who thinks that one person can turn around the biggest recession in 70 years in a year is completely unrealistic. Most Dems I know who are frustrated are angry at a lack of progress. Most Reps I know who are angry think it's too much too fast.

Isn't it great that we live in a country where we are allowed to express our opinions without worrying about being arrested? That's what makes this country great.

But I do have some questions:
Why is a socialist education system ok but a socialist health care system is not?

Why would moving to a more competitive health care system be considered socialistic? Personally, I would love to have a choice regarding health care rather than have it be in my employer's hands.

Why is it ok to rack up trillions in national debt to fight a foreign war but not to meet the medical needs of our people?

Those are some of things I don't understand and would really like to hear answers that make sense to me.

I'd also point out that, personally, Ms. Average Middle Class here has already had a larger cut with the stimulus package than I had with the Bush tax cuts.

One of the big reasons I didn't watch - that's getting old. It's time for the current administration (not just the President) to put on their big boy pants and quit whining.

I don't watch 100% of any State of the Union speech, but I'm not into pep rallies in the first place.

As for drinking games, drink every time Obama says "I". The last speech prior to last night, he said it 132 times.

Ghostwriter 01-28-2010 10:49 AM

^^^Ditto! I simply can't watch these regardless of who the President is. A complete waste of time.

BTW - he said "I" over 100 times last night. You would have gotten fairly well plastered if you simply had an ounce of your favorite alcoholic beverage per "I".
