Screw NBC, Screw Jay Leno
|
Sorry, I much prefer Jay Leno. I don't find Conan funny at all, in fact I find him kind of irritating. But I also think that it is a generational thing-my college age kids much prefer Conan and think Jay is lame, many of us middle aged fogeys feel the opposite. I feel bad for both of them, I think NBC screwed the pooch all the way around. Who wins? Letterman. You gotta admit, he must be feeling pretty good considering how he was the heir apparent to Carson when NBC passed him over for Leno way back when.
|
I didn't really care one way or another, since I am always asleep before the Tonight show comes on. BUT after reading Conan's letter yesterday, I was really impressed by the way he (or his staff) wrote the public statement. So now I am TEAM CONAN!

I like both of them. I think they're both entertaining in their own, very different, ways. DVR always allowed me to catch 'The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,' and 'Late Night with Conan O'Brien.' Unfortunately, I wish that's where they stayed. I think that Jay has more "sophisticated" humor (I think that's the word I'm looking for), and should be on at an earlier time. Conan should probably have his own show a little later at night, as he did before. Yet everything is as it is now, and the 'The Tonight Show' shouldn't be pushed back, no matter who the host is. |
I think Jay is annoying. I like Conan. Jimmy Fallon makes me want to gouge my eyes out and I for one would NOT be upset if he fell off the face of the Earth. :)

The gouging out my eyes, for me, also goes for "Lopez Tonight." I loove George Lopez' comedy, but damn it, he CAN NOT do a talk show. Just one lame joke after another....not funny George, not funny. |

I couldn't agree more.:p David Letterman is the best. |

Team CONAN all the way. Jay chose to leave and take his chance at 10 and he screwed it up. He now needs to show some respect and step aside. Either that, or let Conan keep the Tonight show at 11:35 and let Jay have the 12:35 slot, push Fallon back, and get rid of god-awful Carson Daly. |

Everybody who thinks Leno is so great should have been loyal and watched his wack ass show at 10pm.
TEAM CONAN. (But Letterman > Conan) |

That said, Conan is so bizarre looking that I have a hard time watching him at all. I won't watch anything after the 11 o'clock news, so it doesn't really matter to me who is on after that. I didn't mind having Leno on when nothing else was on TV at that time that I wanted to watch. It was kind of a nice fall back. Rumors are that they're making YET ANOTHER Law & Order to help fill the gap.. JUST what we need. Originality people, come up with something original! |
NBC can push all they want, that doesn't mean Jay has to be an ass and go along with it.

I think Leno has awesome delivery, and Conan's "dont take yourself too seriously" approach is hilarious to me. I'm always 49%/51% for Jay/Conan back and forth - I really like them both. While i dont think Leno's show blows total donkey egg, you can tell, aside from the first 5-7 minutes of dialoguing, that show is nothing but gimmick, half-assed interviews and advertising. What a copout on NBCs part, though they've taken a hit over the past 10 years, with many of their must-see TV hits having ended. Quote:

But since we're inciting a Late Night War 2KX, I agree we get rid of Jimmy (he does rock out in the Real Housewives parody, but otherwise... STAB STAB STAB), get rid of Carson (i like him as a person but he really doesnt need a show, esp on NBC. give him another network), hell, let's get rid of Jimmy Kimmel while we're at it. but yes, im rocking out with #teamconan. If Fallon gets the boot, maybe Conan can hook the Roots up? They make up for more than half of my tolerance for Fallon being on-air. |

Regardless, it's NBC that really loses, and probably deserves to lose. They're not looking good at all. |
I'm not a Conan fan. He tries to make every interview all about him, which kinda defeats the purpose of the interview. I'd rather watch Jay than Conan, but both pale in comparison to Dave.
I must admit that I thought Conan's letter was nice and extremely well-put. Still, it's a non-issue for me since, when I watch late night TV, I watch Letterman. |

The only thing funny about Conan is his hair. |
Whatever happened to Arsenio Hall? Why did his show get cancelled?

Law & Order: Trial By Jury never had a fair chance. :(
And I reallllly enjoyed Law & Order: Crime and Punishment (the reality show). |

This has nothing to do with who is funny or not, it has to do with following through on promises. Conan stayed w/ the Late Show for 5 years more than he needed to, on the promise that he would get the Tonight Show (which at 12:05 is no longer the Tonight Show). Conan got nowhere NEAR the welcome that Jay got when he took over, and Jay was dying in the ratings for the first year and a half he was on.
"Doesn't it feel great to be vindicated?" - Whoopi Goldberg to David Letterman last night. He has to be the happiest he's ever been in his life right now. |

Lopez' monologue (or whatever you wanna call it) at the beginning of the show are usually NEVER funny, and now he's adopted a freaking stupid ass laughing gesture. (where he crouches down, and covers his mouth with his hand with a limp wrist). He's trying waaaaay to hard to be funny, and be "that guy." I <3 Lopez, but his show is just really bad. http://images.eonline.com/eol_images....lc.112509.jpg ^^^^^^^ Now this shit was funny!!! (although chola girl, not so much) |
Am I the only one who actually likes Jimmy??

Also, they tried to stick a late night TV show in prime time. WTF. At 9pm I want to watch some straight up Law and Order. Jay Leno's ugly mug on my TV instead of Vincent D'Onofrio makes me homicidal. |
From what I understand 5 or so years ago, NBC did not want to lose Conan to another network so they promised him the Tonight Show, effectively "retiring" Jay, kinda without giving him a choice, in 5 years. 5 years came and went, and Jay's numbers were still good, AND another network was supposedly angling to get him. The idea of having him go head to head with Conan made NBC nervous. So they came up with the idea of the 10pm show. I regularly watched Jay at 11:30 but there was something off with the 10pm show-can't put my finger on it, they messed it up when the decided to make it a New! Improved for 10pm! show. So now they still may have a head to head at 11:30, just not quite the way they thought it would be. Ehh, may the best man win. After all, it is Hollywood.

I like Jimmy because he's goofy and cute. Anyone who expected Johnny Carson-level stuff out of him is going to be very disappointed. |
Umm, what else was he supposed to say? Pitch a fit and look like a loser? Nope, not buying that.
|
Quote:
That's it. He doesn't look like a loser, is just saying what he feels, and he's not trying to screw Conan. Instead he covered up his feelings to kiss network ass and now he looks like a loser AND a total asshole. |
Quote:
I'm with you, agzg! And #TeamConan! Only because NBC screwed him over royally and his letter was really classy and he impressed me. I don't watch late night television very much, but when I do, it's Letterman. On a related note, I saw this on Twitter today: "You can do anything you want in life...unless Jay Leno wants to do it to." --Conan O'Brien's advice to kids. |

I hope that Conan will get picked up by someone else and have a show far superior than Jay's because it seems as though he deserves it. |
This is maybe the best thread on the site - in so many ways, it's a litmus test.
If you haven't watched Conan the last couple of nights, he's been proving exactly why he's infinitely funnier and better-suited than Leno for any reasonable late-night position. NBC's immolation is nearly complete (I'm SURE Comcast will right the ship, right after they start returning my phone calls over misbillings) - this is hysterical, short-term-oriented thinking to paper over a long-term business failure. Leno is a backstabbing bottom-dealing corporate-shill weasel who deserves Zucker and his band of backstabbing, bottom-dealing, back-patting turbo douches. He found someone stupid on Sunset Boulevard! How delightfully droll! Now, let's scour the local business daily for typos in the classifieds, then giggle at sycophantic interviews. I, for one, cannot wait. |
Quote:
and I agree with you, if I was to watch Leno's show @ it's new time slot, it would only probably be for Headlines (I think they are hilarious, no matter what others say) and even Jaywalking (I can't believe people really are that stupid). |
I could have told them from the get-go that Conan wouldn't fly at 11. They kept B^#*#ing about his ratings, well DUH! He has younger viewers and younger viewers are most likely watching Stephen Colbert at 11:30. I know they promised him The Tonight Show, but did it ever occur to him that 7 months ago wasn't the right time? They should have just held out. I really do like him, but everyone at NBC effed up big time.
I liked Jay where he was and Conan where he was and Jimmy Fallon not on tv (or on SNL) much better. Last night I watched Fallon's show and it was people playing "air drum" for laughs. HOW IS THIS FUNNY?! LOSER! The best thing about the show is The Roots and if he didn't talk, I'd watch more often. Otherwise...FAIL. |
