It's that time again, American Idol 2010

Let's get it started!

PhiSigStarlight 01-14-2010 03:01 AM

PANTS ON THE GROUND.
PANTS ON THE GROUND.
LOOKIN LIKE A FOOL WITH YO PANTS ON THE GROUND!

Yes! It's Idol season once again haha.

Auditions have been the usual so far, I suppose. I have to admit, I miss Paula though. I'm wondering if this season may be the last since Simon will be leaving to do X Factor.

Anyway, I was surprised about how nice Victoria was as a guest judge. She was very down to earth and gave a lot of people compliments on just about anything. It made me want to meet her, lol. On the other hand, I thought Mary J. Blige was really rude...I feel like I lost a little respect for her after tonight.

I cracked up! I've been boycotting this show for awhile (I refused to watch another episode after they kicked off Tamyra Gray--I loved her!) but FB was lit up with status updates about "pants on the ground." I watch it on YT and figured if the rest were half as good, it'd be worth it to watch. It was. :D

Gold in ya mouth, hat turned sideways....*starts breakdancing*:p

Though I'm betting those 2 best friends aren't best friends anymore. That was so sad, but it was no contest. The girl in the blue (Lauren) wouldn't even hug her friend (Carmen) back.

srmom 01-14-2010 11:35 AM

Lauren crossed her arms and pouted, looked like a baby, she also had "Frankenstein head", which was distracting.

Some good singers though. I kind of thought I was over AI, but I'm sucked in again...

tld221 01-14-2010 11:58 AM

umm, so no one is #teamskibowski?

I AM!

ComradesTrue 01-14-2010 12:48 PM

I swore up and down that I would not be sucked in this year, but I just can't turn away from the auditions. Therefore I promised myself that I would just watch the auditions. However, as usual, the people suck me in, so now I have to watch Hollywood week, and then of course I will be glued to the TV until May. Ugh!

Honestly, I don't miss Paula at all, even though I thought that there would be something (though I don't know what that "something" would have been) missing. However, Posh was a perfect replacement, and I would love to see her as the permanent replacement instead of Ellen. I felt that she channeled Paula's kindness and encouragment, while still providing some helpful, honest, and accurate feedback. My only complaint was that she just didn't look healthy. Kara is very thin, though healthy IMO, and Victoria was only a fraction of her size!

Anyway, thoughts on the first two nights:
Vonore TN/the bridge jumper: kind of pulling for her! She isn't as cute or charming as Kelly Pickler, but I am such a sucker for the true small town girl who has never been on an aero-plane! She seemed so genuine. I fear that she will be eaten alive in Hollywood week, though, and miss her mamma too much.

Almost killed 3 times guy: at first I was rolling my eyes that they were giving that guy any airtime, but the "cheap re-enactments" that they created were well worth dealing with his obnoxious speech patterns.

Granddaughter of the Portuguese lady with Alzheimers: a sweet kid that you just want to pull for, but with an a-may-zing voice. Can't believe that she had that voice at 16. If she can hold it together during Hollywood week, she should be able to make at least the semi-finals.

Best of the night, though, hands-down, was Pants on the Ground. There is no doubt that he will reappear for the finale, no? Also, if they put that on iTunes, I swear that he could make a million dollars!

PhiSigStarlight 01-14-2010 01:02 PM

I was so surprised with the bridge jumper girl. Her singing voice is so old school country and pretty. She was sweet and funny, and really would make the ultimate American Idol if she can make it through the competition since she has come from being such a small town girl. A lot of people could like and relate to her, and I think she would look amazing if she got a makeover.

I bawled my eyes out when they were showing the backstory of the granddaughter of the Portugese lady with Alzheimers. I'm really really close to my grandma and it makes me feel sad to imagine what it would be like if she had Alzheimers. She had such a great voice too.

What did everyone think of the Guitar Girl? That's one way to get noticed!

epchick 01-14-2010 01:08 PM

Am I the only one who didn't think "Pants on the Ground" was that funny? I might have chuckled for a sec when he tried to breakdance, but that was it.

LttleMsPrEp 01-14-2010 03:27 PM

I think that guitar girl had a great voice, however, the entire time she was singing I was totally distracted by her outfit.

There are times during the auditions where I felt that Randy merely went off of what Simon said as opposed to forming his own opinion. Which was actually pretty frustrating for me to watch.

I didn't at first, but now it's grown on me. :D Just a taste of how popular it is....I paused in the middle of posting this because they did a spot on Larry Platt on the channel 4 news just now. Turns out he had a pretty big role in the Civil Rights movement. They showed old pictures of him at a protest.

ComradesTrue 01-14-2010 09:26 PM

Am I the only one who feels this thread is empty without Nittany and Tippie?

Wishing they would come back....

Tippiechick 01-15-2010 10:09 PM

I'm not gone. Just not here every day...

I like BridgeJumper. If for no other reason, then I like her for her authenticity. There's no putting on with her. With Pickler, I always wondered if she was real... I know Bridgejumper is real. She's just like some of the poor, country girls I grew up going to school with. (Poor meaning dirt poor.)

I think it is awesome they are flying her out to Hollywood. I doubt she'll make it very far. Her voice is not commercial enough. And, her look is definitely NOT what Idol wants.

I have no one I just love. And, I want to hurt GuitarGirl for singing in that outfit. Plus, her version was not very good. It was WAY too twangy and yodel-like. You can't sing a country standard like that lookin' like a damn fool.

Oh yeah i was reading about that. Supposedly ATL has a day named after him. He was a big activist during the Civil Rights Movement.

PhiSigStarlight 01-17-2010 09:07 PM

^^Haha Jen, same!

I'm going to miss Idol on Tuesday. :(((( Break isn't officially over til Tuesday because we don't have classes on Monday and we can't have meetings when school isn't in session. So our first meeting back from break is Tuesday at 8. I hope nothing epic happens. But if it does, I suppose I can just catch it on YouTube.

kddani 02-18-2010 11:25 AM

Bump. Thought they made some odd choices in who to put through. As to the females, they definitely seem to have something that they're after this year. Some of the ones they put through screwed up pretty badly, but I think they had the look and perhaps the sound that Idol is looking for this year.

Was happy that they put through the guy who covered "Straight Up" as opposed to the 16 year old way-out-there-flamboyant guy with the mom who was leashed onto him constantly.

ComradesTrue 02-18-2010 03:07 PM

FInally got around to watching this week's shows (Olympics takes priority this week!). I like how they seem to be showing more and more of Hollywood Week each season. I was also thrilled that once it got down to the last 2 of each gender they didn't make them sit together. Totally awkward for the one that gets put through.

Totally agree. From the beginning I was just praying that he and his mamma would be sent packing. I didn't care how well he sang- the two of them were annoying as hell. On the flip side, "Straight Up Guy" seems so wonderfully kind, humble and genuine.

Me too. :( I actually teared up a little for her. Just too many good (and unique) female singers this year. The only one that I am a little  about was Siobhan (sp?). I don't remember being wowed by her vocals, but maybe I am forgetting something?

Most of the guys I didn't really remember, except for the 70s dude who broke his wrists falling out of trees, the kid adopoted by his aunt (though I wasn't really feeling it with him), John Park, new daddy, and maybe one other.

Happens every year. I swear that I am not going to get sucked in, and then I do.

srmom 02-18-2010 04:02 PM

I think there are some really good people this year.

I'm kind of into the whole "singer songwriter" thing, and there are quite a few who not only have great voices, but can play the guitar really well. I just don't know if AI is the right venue for that type of genre.

(moved from the other woops thread I started :))

I was sad about Angela too, and kind of surprised because I thought she was pretty darn good!

gee_ess 02-18-2010 07:54 PM

I like the cute guy with the blond hair in the pony tail. (I think Kara likes him, too!)

I was so glad the beeotch that was such a pain in the neck with her group on group day is gone. She was kind of a rocker chick who was really hard on her group and was pretty certain she was going to make top 24.

I was rooting for Charity Vance (a fellow Arkansan) but she went out with the rest of room #3. Boo.

I like Big Mike, the new daddy.

srmom 02-19-2010 11:24 AM

Did y'all hear about the guy that got the boot? Chris Golightly? He had some kind of contract dispute, so they put another guy in.

gee_ess 02-19-2010 09:40 PM

^^^ Wow - it wouldn't be Idol without a little drama!!!

I am just ready to get this show on the road!

bevinpiphi 02-22-2010 01:56 AM

Found out today that Katelyn Epperly is a Pi Phi - IL Eta - It's up on our website.
It gives me just one more reason to watch AI.

ComradesTrue 02-24-2010 09:29 PM

Some random musings:

Thought most of the girls really laid an egg last night. Nerves? Perhaps. However, there were so many really bad performances that I have no idea who will be sent home.

Those most likely to leave:
Paige Miles. Interesting, as Simon has mentioned several times that she is one of the best. She got barely 10 seconds of PR prior to last night, and with those wonky notes... wow, things don't look good for her. Kind of a shame if she really, really can sing. We may never get to know.

Ashley Rodriguez. Could have "the look" but she was just so plain and flat. Must find a personality soon or her days are limited.

Haeley Vaughn.
Haeley, oh Haeley. So adorable. So happy. So needed to wait 2-3 more years to enter this competition. Plus, the lisp bugs me.

Lacey- can't even remember her performance

I also found it interesting that the girls who actually did sing on key (Didi and Crystal Bowersox) reaped some of the harshest criticism from the judges, whereas those who couldn't hit a note for anything barely got a negative comment.

Katie- she is adorable and has a good voice, but anyone else feel like the judges are pushing her down our throats? Almost as if she has been deemed The Chosen One.

I loved Janell's Orlando audition, and hoping that she can continue to deliver that. We shall see.

Enjoying all the guitar (and harmonica!) playing this year.

Faves: Bowersox, Janell, Lily.

As for tonight:
Todrick is clearly taking a page from the Glambert/Constantine "undress us with their eyes" looks into the camera. Yick.

Aaron Kelly- darkhorse for this season? Kid's got chops.

Jermaine- did he hit any notes? Making me miss Jermaine Purifory.

Anyone else noticing how shiny, shiny, shiny the microphone is this year? Am I the only one distracted by that? :p

Judges:
Ellen isn't adding a blasted thing to the show this year, and I say that as someone who is a fan of hers. While loopy Paula didn't offer anything to the contestants, at least she gave us fodder! Ellen just seems to be repeating what everyone else is saying. She does have "stage presence" knowledge but doesn't seem to add anything on the musical front.

Finally, just learned that Alex Lambert goes to the high school that I graduated from.

srmom 02-25-2010 12:02 PM

I loved Didi and Crystal for the girls, and Casey for the guys (and because of his singing not his cuteness). That's the kind of music I like and buy, but it doesn't seem like the kind that Simon Cowel productions wants, hence the shoving down our throats of Katie - who can sing, but do we need another teenage pop star? I guess so!

Poor Casey - the whole Kara thing is just embarrassing. He handled it well, but geesh, give the guy a break! He could hardly sing straight with all the hijinx and joking going on over at the judge's table. At least Ellen apologized to him for it.

I think Ellen has added some good criticisms. Half the time, she is the one to speak first, and I think she adds something to the show. It might not be much, but it's something.

At least she doesn't blow sunshine up everyone's a** like Paula did.

Now, keeping in mind that I just started watching the show this week with the top 24... these people suck! All I keep hearing is that this is the best top 24 ever. And I understand the first time on a big stage can be quite frightening, but come on. There wasn't one memorable performance. There were a few I "remember", but that was only because they have a distinctive look about them (girls: harmonica singing Alanis, short red hair; guys: blonde guitar, gokey kid, muscle man dad). Still, with most of the ones I mentioned, I can't even remember which songs they sang. Just whether or not they were ok or were downright awful.

They better start blowing me away, or I'm going to stop watching.

Ditto this! Can anybody say "Deer in the Headlights"!

They always seem to be hardest on those with the most talent. At least Simon is. I'm really rooting for Crystal. I just hope she "got it" when Simon told her she needs to be original because for a minute there the comment seemed to go over her head.

I was really surprised by the results on Thursday. I can't believe the Joe Muñoz was kicked off when he was one of the few guys that sounded good on Wednesday. I know it's a popularity contest and not really a singing contest but it just annoys me.

I also really hate this format for the top 24...I'm already bored with this group and we haven't even gotten down to the top 12 yet.

I watched the guys’ performances again before I watched the results last night (love DVR!), and I have to say that America made the WRONG decision. Simon was right... the other kid that was up against Joe (who was brought back on the show after having been kicked off) got by on his looks and the fact that people felt bad for him after Simon’s comments. Even HE looked shocked when he realized he was staying.

And Mullet kid stayed?! He was probably the worst out of all of them! Ironically, 70s kid didn’t get by on his looks like the other guy did.

(Oh, and after listening to the guys again, I realized I somehow missed two performances! I LOVE Lee! His voice is great. And I agree with Randy that he should try singing a Kings of Leon song.)

Generally, what is the format for this level of the competition? Or do they change it every season?

Ghostwriter 03-03-2010 11:27 AM

Watched last night and except for Simon the judges need to be kicked off.

This is the format they have used for the Top 24 for the last few seasons, but they used to have three groups of eight (male and female) perform and the top three vote getters from each group moved on to the Top 12. Then they would have a wild card round, and the judges each picked their favorite to round out the Top 12.

srmom 03-03-2010 04:13 PM

So, what do y'all think of the singing?

I really liked the mullet boy last night, he has a really unusual sounding voice, and if he can just get over his jitters, he could be good!

Also think that the other young country singing boy should stick to country, didn't like his song at all!

Liked the muscley black guy! He has serious soul and feeling in his singing!!

Casey, Kara's crush should be a guitar player singing backup in a band. His voice is just not very strong and it's kind of goatish (warbley)

Not really crazy about the other singers last night, but have high hopes for tattoo neck guy, he just needs to sing the right song.

Going home? the dancing black guy? the Korean cute guy from Northwestern?

Will I ever know these people's names? Will I care? :)

Agree - John Park (Korean/american) and Todrick Hall (dancing dude) are my bets to go home. Casey (guitar God) could be a surprise go homer.

Although the judges continually tell the contestants to change things up and when they do (as Todrick did) they get conflicting responses.

Again, time to fire the judges or at least Ellen and Kara and bring whacky Paula back.

angels&angles 03-04-2010 09:42 PM

Ellen has no comments of any merit but at least she's sometimes funny. I'll take that over Kara/Paula (who also have no merit, but fail miserably at being funny) any day.

Also, go Katelyn Epperly. PPL.

ASTalumna06 03-05-2010 03:39 AM

Interestingly, whenever Ellen follows Randy with her comments, she tends to say something that closely resembles the comments he has already made. But when she's on the end of the panel, and she is the first to speak, I feel like she actually contributes something (although, again.. it's not much).

To be honest, half of the time I just fast-forward through the other judges and just listen to Simon. He's the only one who is actually honest and who has anything constructive to say.

I do the same thing.

gee_ess 03-12-2010 05:22 PM

I was sorry to see the 16 year old boy get into the top 12 last night. I really get a bad - stagemomcrazy - feeling about him.
Plus, I think Lilly should have stayed instead of the young teen girl.

Looking forward to rooting on the long haired boy (Tim?) and Lee (the former rebellious teenager guy turned good).

Ghostwriter 03-17-2010 08:30 AM

Actually a very good night for most everyone last night. Rolling Stones songs suited most all of them very well. Shibohan and Crystal were the best of the girls and (I hate to say it) Aaron was the best of the guys.

Ellen was pretty funny last night and is getting better as a personality (not judge).

My pick for the bottom three are: Andrew, Paige and Tim. I believe Andrew will go home but this is just a w.a.g.

gee_ess 03-17-2010 10:07 AM

I agree, Ghostwriter.

I think Ellen is finding a nice rhythm and interjecting just the right amount of humor. I also felt like she was more independent (with regard to her opinions) last night than any other night.

Does anyone else notice how Kara totally ignores Ellen? Last night, she managed to turn and glance at her a few times, but she never "connects", imo. Her body language speaks volumes.
