For those in states without a professional sports team...
who do you root for in football, baseball, basketball, etc? i know alot of people from oklahoma who root for the dallas cowboys.
|
Well, CT used to have a professional sports team (Long live the Whalers). That said, here's who I follow:
Baseball: Yankees. My dad is a die hard Yankees fan, so he raised me as a Yankees fan. Don Mattingly and Dave Winfield were my favorite players growing up. The funny thing is that as a little kid I always wondered if they'd win a title, since the Red Sox, Tigers and Blue Jays were better in the late 80s/early 90s. Football: Giants. Same as above, my dad is a big Giants fan so I grew up watching the games. Basketball: I don't really follow one NBA team in particular, although I began to like the Celtics when I lived in Boston. I mainly follow college basketball. |
SOME people in CT are also Red Sox/Patriots fans...
And yes, RIP Whalers. That loss broke a lot of hearts. Now, CT does have UConn Basketball. And their football team is getting better. So there's something to follow. |

I misread....

Since we are seriously lacking a pro football team in Detroit.. I just stick with college football (although Michigan hasn't exactly been great the last two seasons either!)

^^^lol

Be nice to see what teams Skins fans root for next year...

My city doesn't have any major football/baseball/basketball teams, so I have to root for teams in surrounding cities...though I've just gotten into college football, GOOOOO DUCKS! :D Lol I'm not a huge sports person, so I'm easing into it. But generally, my parents are Dallas Cowboys fans, so I just go along for the ride.

Arkansas Razorbacks IS our pro-team.
But I watch Dallas area teams in Arkansas. And Dallas area teams are a general rule in Arkansas except for baseball where the Cardinals remain king. |
I root for all Boston teams.

We do have a professional sports franchise now though, the OKC Thunder. So far, I've made it out to at least a couple games per year. |

That makes sense being as every year there are calls for the organization to change the name.
There are lots of people in the area that don't know the history of the team (nor probably care) |
A lot of people here like the orioles, and they're starting to steal fans away from the Braves. I guess the NOVA types root for the Nationals. Richmond now has the Flying Squirrels (AA baseball) and the Renegades (AA hockey). We had a WNBA team for a while, but I guess no one in town supported them. Even for a WNBA team.

will wait for Angelos to drop dead or Ripken to buy the Os before I ever watch or go to another game.

Or do you mean you don't understand why everyone here loves the Cowboys? I don't either...but then again, they are "America's team." |

As for the Nats, I don't know how anyone in DC could support them, their tickets are expensive and they suck! At least with the O's, the tickets are reasonable. |

I hate band wagon hoppers. |

My husband laughs at people who are Yankees, Redsox or Cowboys fans who don't live in those towns. Way to be a fair weather fan! |

The northwest is notably light in the professional sport arena (at least for football, baseball, soccer, and basketball). Even moreso now that the Sonics went to OK City. I believe that leaves us with Seattle Seahawks, Seattle Mariners, Seattle Sounders, and Portland Trailblazers- so one of each to cover the pacific northwest. According to various tv shows, people in Alaska tend to root for these teams because they're the closest.... even though Anchorage is 1500 miles from Seattle!
<Slight swerve> For those who are fortunate enough to have two teams to choose from in one city or very close by, how do you choose between them? Do you go with whomever is best at the time, cheaper tickets, broadcasted on tv/radio, family tradition, or something else? |

Ravens - We have more dedicated fans. - Best rivalry with the Steelers -been a fan since inception -better stadium and easily accessible with Baltimore Metro -tickets are easier to get than Redskins tix. -This year more Ravens games were on than past years, I think even a Skins game was pre empted at one point and the Ravens Vikings game was shown....LOL |

I love Conseco Fieldhouse, but the ushers are like the Stasi- don't even look at the empty seat next to you or they will ask for proof that you have a ticket for it. The Lucas Oil ushers are much nicer are better at customer service. (but that's another thread). |

Never lived in Baahhhstun but I root for the Red Sox. My dad is from there, and when I was a kid, the summer was not complete if we didn't see a game at Fenway when we would visit the grandparents.
As to Northern Virginia, most people living here are not originally from this area. So you see jerseys and ball caps for all sorts of teams, pro and college. And as to the Skins, Snyder is not well liked. People are very nostalgic for the old Skins when Cooke was the owner. And when they had winning seasons. And weren't changing coaches every 27 minutes. |
