East Coast Blizzard

I didn't see a thread yet about the blizzard that is currently blasting the East Coast. Is everyone ok?

I left New York this afternoon, heading home to Georgia. This evening, while driving through Virginia, the snow started getting crazy. My husband and I are currently stranded in Harrisonburg, VA. It's looking like we won't be able to leave until Sunday morning when the snow is supposed to stop.

Has anyone else tried to venture out? It's really dangerous out in the thick of it. There were cars in the ditch and pulled over to the side all along 81 South.

dreamseeker 12-19-2009 01:13 AM

Soror I just read your fb status! JEEZ!!! It's supposed to snow in CT on sunday- 6in. That's all I've heard. Be safe!

AOII Angel 12-19-2009 09:13 AM

It started snowing last night and is supposed to go all day. I looked out the window this morning and cars down the street in our alley are covered in about a foot of snow but our cars are not. The wind was apparently blowing our way. There is a three foot bank of snow on the opposite side of my car. Nice.

That's been upped to 10-14 inches. It's about time we had a blizzard. It's been a long time!

Benzgirl 12-19-2009 11:30 AM

I flew out of Reagan National Thursday night. By Friday morning, flights going southeast were starting to be cancelled.

So far, I saw one snowflake on the way to the gym this morning. There is no place like home!

UofISigKap 12-19-2009 11:59 AM

I'm staying inside. I really do need to grocery shop and finish getting my last few presents, but that looks like a no go until next week. It looks absolutely beautiful though! :)

I'm supposed to fly to Ohio tomorrow. No idea if that's going to happen or not.

So far we have about 10 inches in Northern VA. I am so glad my daughter got home from college yesterday afternoon before flakes started to fall. I-81 can be a mess in perfectly good weather....

I have not seen one plow on our street yet and being a street that a Metro bus uses, it's supposed to be a high priority. VDOT's snow removal capability makes me (almost but not really) wish I lived in the Northeast again. THEY know how to deal with snow.

Psi U MC Vito 12-19-2009 01:13 PM

It hasn't hit me yet actually.

I can't believe you're at 10 inches - all of our business students take finals on Saturday and they had already closed the university by 4:30 yesterday! I'm glad I was able to get out of there earlier in the week.

We're supposed to get 6-12 inches here, but it hasn't started yet, I think its moving up the coast a little more slowly than they expected.

I didn't realize until now that they closed the Metro too.

I think they've just reduced service to only the underground stations...so basically only within DC proper. And bus service is cancelled. Not sure how I plan to get to BWI...right now the plan involves Metro to Union Station and then Amtrak.

XAntoftheSkyX 12-19-2009 04:23 PM

Stupid storm ruined my weekend plans. The Cape is supposed to get from 1-1.5 feet through Sunday.

tld221 12-19-2009 06:56 PM

i dont know if i believe the hype. it started snowing at like 1 when i got to work. im about to leave to hit Macy's (im regretting this already) so we'll see.

Gusteau 12-19-2009 07:00 PM

Yeah, we don't even have an inch yet. I don't think its going to be what was predicted...

Psi U MC Vito 12-19-2009 07:03 PM

Yeah it's nothing, and it's been snowing since 1. Maybe over night it will add up, but not sure yet.

EagleChick19 12-19-2009 07:39 PM

Almost a foot of snow here in Southeastern PA....

alum 12-19-2009 07:45 PM

It's deeper than my Omnigrid 24" quilting ruler.

christiangirl 12-19-2009 08:06 PM

I came home just in time. One of my friends in VA just told me what it looks like over there. Right after she called, my friend in NJ called to say she wants to visit me out here. She's about half a second from being snowed in. You guys be careful out there!

VandalSquirrel 12-19-2009 08:09 PM

I was wondering why people were so freaked out that it was snowing and I realized that it isn't the norm and the familiarity factor and preparedness level isn't the same if you're in the foothills of the Rockies. If it was snowing here I'd put on my snow shoes and go outside to play.

It is raining here, and supposed to all week. I am hoping that it continues to rain until after my new tires are on and I've put my car in the garage for my stay inside and watch movies/knit in my pyjamas holiday.

KSUViolet06 12-19-2009 08:13 PM

I'm in NE OH and were haven't gotten much today at all. Maybe 3 inches.

I understand that other areas WAY South of us like DC/VA/MD are getting hit pretty hard.

On the other side of town (the non-snow belt area), we are just now having a little snow that is sticking. My drive isn't even covered -- I think that is known as a "trace" of snow.

In NE Ohio, anything up to 6 inches is basically a non-event.

I just heard from my friend who moved from Twinsburg to Charlotte, NC. She only took one snow shovel and left her snow blower in Ohio. Boy, is she regretting that now.

dreamseeker 12-19-2009 09:17 PM

nothing here in hartford. i ran out to get me some rum, pizza, and cookie dough. :D

Lol that's what I call "planning for a storm" - the important things are all that matters! :)

DaemonSeid 12-19-2009 09:26 PM

snow?

What's that?

It's that white stuff blocking your front door.

RU OX Alum 12-19-2009 10:03 PM

Stay warm and safe everybody.

YUP! :D

pomplemousse12 12-19-2009 10:29 PM

It started snowing around 2 here I guess (I'm in Northern NJ), but it hasn't amounted to much. I'm so jealous of all of my friends in VA, I want more snow!

...Not that I go out and play in it, but dammit I want a white Christmas =[

Down here in SE Ohio we have about 5 inches.

tld221 12-19-2009 11:09 PM

Its picked up here. Harlem doesn't really get shoveled like the rest of the city :( it actually felt colder last night.

I also had a dress on tho. So yeah.

I still think the snow got hyped, for NYC anyway. But time will tell.

AOII Angel 12-20-2009 12:07 AM

We've already shoveled the drive twice. I've been in Baltimore three years and this is the first time we even bought a snow shovel. Snow never even stays more than two days. I can't even estimate the amount since the wind has blown it around so much. It's as deep as four feet in areas and as shallow as two inches in others.

unicorn 12-20-2009 12:27 AM

This is my first blizzard--I am a California girl at heart!

I just moved to Northern Virginia/Metro DC in May, so this is my first blizzard... we have probably 18" on the ground! Work called today around 12 to tell me not to come in and I have no clue if we'll be open tomorrow or not. Sure hope roommate's and my flights aren't cancelled this week--she leaves crazy early on Monday (BWI) and I leave medium early on Wednesday (DCA).

aephi alum 12-20-2009 12:32 AM

We have about three inches of snow on the ground so far here in CT. DH and I were going to attend a friend's birthday get-together this evening, but our friend cancelled the event because of the forecast. So we are hunkered down at home, relaxing and hoping the power doesn't go out.

I have a really awesome headlamp in the event power goes out I can still knit. You should get one for your cross stitching ;)

honeychile 12-20-2009 12:47 AM

There's at least five inches in the yard here - the little dog is hard to see outside, with the snow up over his little tummy! Yet he plays and plays, even though "some" parts of him must be crazy cold!

The forecast said to expect the "real snow" to come to blizzard proportions by the end of the week. After what I've heard about Virginia, I'm glad I cancelled my tickets to an event outside of DC this weekend!

DaemonSeid 12-20-2009 12:48 AM
