Jersey Shore

OK, fess up—who's watched this?

http://www.mtv.com/shows/jersey_shore/series.jhtml

DrPhil 12-14-2009 04:36 PM

I watch it.

BrandNewAdvisor 12-14-2009 04:40 PM

I've watched part of an episode I don't have the patience for it. I grew up about 15minutes away from where it's filmed so while I guess this is entertaining for some, to me it's June-August at home. People like the cast on this show are the ones that give New Jersey the dirty, trashy stereotype and they aren't even from the state.

What surprised me is that Seaside Heights has been trying to market itself as family friendly and the show is completely contrary to that.

The show is entertaining the same way a lot of reality tv is entertaining dumb people behaving badly.

DEVODUDE 12-14-2009 04:57 PM

I watched it and that was the first and last time!!!!!!

WVU alpha phi 12-14-2009 06:09 PM

I watched it but ended up fast forwarding through a lot of the first episode. I was really only interested in the bar scenes since I've been to bars in Belmar (also on the Jersey Shore). They're pretty boring to watch and definitely trying too hard to be Italian. Who really says "salute" every time they toast or take shots? I'm Italian and know a lot of other Italians (including ones from Jersey) and I'd laugh at someone if they did that.

Elephant Walk 12-14-2009 06:33 PM

I watch this show on a reg.

Now after I've blown y'alls minds the reason is this: I'm kind of a masochist. This show makes me hate life and I like that. It drives me completely crazy but I can't stop watching.

Not surprised that a fratty would be watching to point and laugh, but ... wow. So you can actually make it through a whole episode full of gel, spray tan, and fist pumping?

KSUViolet06 12-14-2009 07:06 PM

I checked it out.

Why are some of these peeps darker than me?

lovespink88 12-14-2009 07:10 PM

I watch it because my ex boyfriend would fit in quite well on this show. And then I'm reminded of him and I laaaaugh and laaaaugh.....

Not from NJ but Italian (dad's off the boat), and we say "salud" when we toast. Then again, half the conversation at family gatherings is in Italian anyway.

PS I haven't seen the show but saw clips on TMZ.

You mean the tanned ones?

Other than that, I'm used to various ethnicities being darker than I am. :)

I'm referring to the tanning.

They all look like orange brown oopma loompas.

I mean, I have friends who tan, but not to that extent. It looks ridiculous.

Tanning in general is really scary to me (off topic).

Don't get me started.

Oh yeah, I made a couple of posts in the "what do you feel like saying now" thread the other day. I felt like the lone GCer who has seen it. :p

ZTAngel 12-14-2009 07:37 PM

I watch it. Are there people who really act like this???? I'm guessing this group is just playing it up for the cameras - right?

Kappamd 12-14-2009 07:49 PM

This show makes me want to cry for humanity.

1. Most Italians (parents or grandparents straight off the boat) don't try too hard to be Italian. They just are. The family lifestyles they showed before they all took off are pretty right on. These people remind me of my Sicilian family in Staten Island and Brooklyn. The Italian and Sicilian culture is still fresh in them. (no offense if this is similar to you, but I can't stand when people are like I'M ITALIAN just because their last name is Italian. The culture is what makes us Italian, not our last names).

I'm sure the cast is playing it up, but it's not unrealistic. And my friends from college wonder why my friends from high school and I never go out to bars when I'm in town.

"Snooki" (WTF?) looks like a bonsai hybrid of Elvira and Christina Aguilera.

PM Mama, this post just touches my heart. Real Italians are display their pride with actions and not tanning, lol. You put it perfectly by saying "they just are" I don't know how to describe it any other way. And its definitly not the lifestyle portrayed on the tv show. Now I can't wait for a good old fashioned Italian Christmas Eve!!

It drives me absolutely bonkers.

But I think it's hilarious. And it's masochism at it's finest.

DrPhil 12-14-2009 11:57 PM

Entertainment Tonight talks about the punch heard around the world. MTV is showing a PSA about violence instead of the punch. Everyone's seen the punch by now, anyway.

I agree that their family lifestyles look typically Italian. My family gatherings consist of a bunch of loud, rowdy, short Italians trying to talk over eachother. :) I was just saying that these people, by constantly talking about being Italian, referring to themselves as guidos and guidettes 24/7, are trying way too hard. I also don't like when people proudly say they're Italian just because of their last name, but do nothing to appreciate their heritage.

As for the "salute" comment, I don't ever use that word so my apolgies for googling it and coming off as a fake Italian.

I miss those good old fashioned Italian Christmas Eves. Mmmmm, calamari.

tld221 12-15-2009 12:42 PM

i've yet to see the show, but its totaly reminiscient of visiting my godsister in Staten Island on the weekend. SI Mall is FULL of these type of folk.

I still think its hilarious that Domino's pulled their ads. because Domino's screams authentic Italine cuisine. I'm sure Olive Garden is declining to comment too.

LXA SE285 12-15-2009 01:09 PM

I think the middle-aged one called "The Situation" is from Staten Island.

I love the TMZ show. They are hilarious. I've always liked Harvey Levin.

They said they guy who punched Snookie was a part of an underground boxing thing.

They showed his fight. He got punched ONCE and was knocked down.

They said "he delivers one punch and can only take one punch."

What a punk.

LOL, I'm 42 so I know from middle-aged. :)

If this guy is 29 or whatever he claims, he needs to stop what he's doing, 'cause it's killing him.

If he is under 40, tanning and drinking can do that to you.

I always thought he looked in his 40s. That's "the situation" that he needs to address.

Thank you :) I have a friend who is a melting pot of nationalities and she'll claim whatever is on topic at the moment. St Patricks Day or drinking or red hair? "I'm Irish". Anything Italian "I'm Italian". I called her out on it one time and was like "NO. You are not Italian. You are a bunch of different nationalities so stop telling people you're Italian".

Bump Its don't work. Most girls actually know how to back-comb their hair to get that perfect poof. Snookies is kinda ratty looking.

3d4life 12-15-2009 05:52 PM

Madonna mia! What a bunch of cafone! They HAD to find the biggest fools or there's no story. Just like EVERY MTV "reality" show.

No. It's called a poof.

Funny thing is, the Guido poof is well used by Arkansas sorority girls.

We've always called it the Fayetteville poof or the Hill poof. Anyways.

Okay, 1. Bump-its work.

2. Sorority girls all over have poofs. Although not to Snookie's excess. If she wasn't a chubby midge, she'd have to worry about ceiling fans taking that off.

VandalSquirrel 12-18-2009 05:14 AM

This show is so wrong in so many ways.

This is comedy gold, and I don't just mean the grammar and spelling.
