Skipping Classes
I have unfortunately skipped a few in my short time at college - just how bad is this anyway???
|
DEFINITELY don't get in the habit of this as it WILL wreak havoc on your GPA. The more you skip, the easier it becomes to skip, and most professors will downgrade you if you've missed a lot of class-- and that's not even taking into account all the information you will not be learning when you are not in class.
Everyone needs to cut class once in awhile. But my personal rule after my disastrous freshman year of skipping classes all over the place, was to never miss more than 1, (2 only if truly unavoidable) over the course of a whole semester. |
I agree with Amy. Its not a good habit to make. I too speak from experience. Going to class is easy. Sort of like getting dressed in the morning. You have control over those things unlike those things that are not so certin. Like Tests :)

Not good...
My freshman year I skipped, skipped, skipped. It was not good. Take it from someone who knows, don't give in to skipping. Skipping class, for me, was like drugs: the more I skipped, less I wanted to go, so the more I skipped.
(Did that sentence even make sense? It's been a long day.) Hope that helps... Jen |
Skipping is a good example of the domino effect. Once you get started doing it, you'll keep doing it, and everything will just pile up. Everyone needs to miss a class once in a while - but don't make it a habit.
God, that sounded like one of those corny after-school specials, or a "The More You Know" commercial on NBC. |
I skipped and did fairly well. Just make sure you skip classes your good at.
|
One of the greatest skills we develop in college is learning which classes are important and which ones we can skip....similar to what work is important and what reading is not....
It's different for everyone, you can't say...ahh only skip this many times a semester, it varies considerably....just as long as you're smart enough to realize when to skip and when not too, kind of like my roommate first yr. who had a habit for sleeping through classes, labs, exams.... |
Okay, maybe this will sound cheesy and dumb, but when I was little, my mom never let us miss school unless we were deathly ill(well, not deathly, but more than a few sniffles) but my brother and I also knew that if my cousin's came to town, or we had a chance to go somewhere fun for the weekend, she would almost always let us skip a Friday for something fun. I kind of used that theory when I went to college. There were some days that I had the sniffles and would have loved to stay on my couch and watch Oprah, but I went to class. And then, when it was that beautiful fall day, and people were leaving town early to go hiking or camping, or even just to the park to play frisbee, I didn't feel to bad about not going because I had almost no skips. If I am going to skip something, I would rather it be for something fun than just not having the energy to get off the couch!(though by my senior year, MaggieAXiD had convinced me that the couch was a pretty good reason to skip!)

Been there, done that
I have to agree with everyone...to a certain extent. As one of the few who have been "expelled" from University (although I'm back in now) I am proof that skipping TOO much won't get ya your degree anytime soon. But sometimes if it is your sanity or class, and you must skip, then I say do it. Allow yourself like three classes a year you will miss. BUT make sure that you still do the readings for the class and that you make a buddy in the class so you can get the notes from them!

While I wouldnt advocate chronic skipping, sometimes it is nice to take a "mental health day" once in a while. Especially on those nice sunny Thursdays.

I learned my lesson when I skipped 50% of intro sociology courses and almost made a B in it. Which is bad, because that has got to be the absolute easiest class at LSU.
I've found that the classes I skip turn out to be my "B" classes. Other than calc and computer science, the classes I've made Bs in are the ones that I've skipped more than once or twice. So far this semester, I've only skipped one class, and it was an 8:30 class. So I'm forgiven :D |
just be careful, I do badly in all of my really easy classes simply because I hold no stock in them, and skip them alot. Actually, I had one class, where I woke up one day, and said to myself, "I've not been to this class in 3 weeks, I think I'll go today" and still ended up (barely) pulling an A from it, but it was an easy class, so if you can understand the material without having to sit in class, indulge occassionally! But go when you can (of course), but don't fret that oh, no...I skipped. It's only bad if you do what I have been known to do...in a classroom of 8, walk out in the middle of class while the prof is sitting there lecturing....they don't like that. I've not had too big of problems with prof's hating me as a result, but I've had some. I don't do that shit anymore though, I'd advise you not to, but if neccesary, you CAN get away with it.

THe best are the profs that make ppl stand at the door if they come in late.....i just sit back, laugh and point...
|
I only skipped classes when I was really under the weather. In eight semesters, I only had Friday classes twice. So, I usually had three-day weekends anyway.

Here's two cents from a longtime professor--
Our school has attendance rules. After 3 cuts, your grade goes down. I don't care if people cut class if they can keep up but what makes me crazy are people who are behind, cut frequently, and then come to me upset during the week before finals with tears in their eyes to ask for extra credit. |
...attendence...give me a break, we're not in grade 8.....
|
I use to skip a lot. I learned my lesson after grades came out. But, now that I'm in my upper-level classes, I go everyday unless I'm close to death. I feel that I miss so much if I skip just one class because my professors go over so much information. Look at it this way: you're paying tuition therefore you're paying to be there. It's not like HS where it was free. So, you might as well get your money's worth and attend class.
|
At Michigan attendance mattered....especially if you had a foreign language class and those professors didnt play.
Skipping a lecture was no biggie, by the time I was a senior id say about 85% of them had notes on the web or were selling them at bookstores. Discussions, you had to be choosy about skipping. I say dont do it. Everyone is right you do become addicted. I had never skipped a class until I college my second semester, after I saw a friend do it. HOOKED! But if you are going to do it, try to do it in moderation, like 1 a month or 2x a semester. ;) |
I find that once you skip a class, it has a snowball effect. You'll always want or feel you can skip it.
The real trick is to find out WHICH classes to skip. Some professors give tests that are generally only from their lectures. Those aren't the ones to skip! |

While I do agree that taking attendance is childish, it makes students who skip very frequently go to class.
When I was at Baylor, every single class except for the really big ones (there werent that many since its a private school) took attendance. I was so mad when i found out they did that because all my friends at UT werent forced to go to class. I am kind of glad they did that though because it got me to get to class and not miss lectures. When i transferred to UH, i was happy to know that hardly any classes take attendance. This is where I got into the habit of skipping class a lot for any reason. Fortunately this semester I have three classes back to back and my first and last class take attendance so I have to be there, and since I cant get to school late or leave early I also go to the class I have in the middle of the other two. By the way, my last class is in a big auditorium and we have to slide our student ID through a scanner when you walk in the room to take roll. After you miss three classes he takes 10 points off your grade for every day missed after that! Dont make skipping class a habit, its harder to get into the habit of going to class afterwards!;) |
...i don't really miss many classes, but i leave at the break for a whole lot of them with pretty much everyone else. most are just too terrible to stay the full three hours.
|
I find that the colder it gets outside, the more motivation it takes to go to class.
The best is when it is so hot out that I can't stand being in the house, because the GE building is air-conditioned. |
AAHH!!
Dont Go Dont Learn!!!!! I paid my way to Matriculation!
I also was an early riser and 1 st class was 7:30, last class out 11:30 the bar opened at 12:00! Good thing my Business Classes were on the same floor and building!:D My last Sem. I had a 3.89 but a high bar bill!!!:p |
exactly tom, schoolwork is key but fun can be had too without sacraficing studytime.

Lol exactly, most of my profs don't even take attendance. I missed a class today. Later when I went to her office hours, I gave the teacher a reason (which was true) and the teacher looked at me like she didn't care that I had missed. This isn't really ever the case but today I got lucky that she didn't really notice the fact that I was gone. |
Opps
Opps, I must sound aweful to the rest of you all . Sadly to say I am known for my class skipage. I have good grades and all but I only skipp the class I know I can skipp it's either ones that have zero attendance policies, or any class after like 230pm . For some reason I just can't function well after 200pm, dunno why. I am more of an early riser so all the am classes I am there bright an early anything after a certain time I just can't go or won't go rather. But I was like that in high school too. Although I must say over the years, I have gotten better and now I rarely miss class, or rarely take anything after 2pm

it's all about knowing which classes to skip...some are easy to skip because the prof may base all the exams on the book, but if they base it on lecture material..chances are you should probably go...
